I don`t know much about how computergames are made, coding, programming etc.
But are there any one of these "free-roaming" titles that involve vast urban areas that have 1rst person view ?
I haven`t played all of them, only Mafia and GTA III, and I have nothing against 3rd person games (The hitman series is another one I like).
That being said I love FPS as well which are the type of game closest to my heart.
Is it feasable to think we might have a 1rst person view in a game like this as a "next" step (as an option) considering the genre is being put into the spotlight bigtime this year\next year with Mafia - GTA - Saints Row.

I think one or two of the Lost Heaven cars had a first person view (or at least a view from inside the cockpit), but for most the camera was in the centre of the bonnet, on top of the bonnet.
IRC I think someone did create a 1st person viewpoint mod for Lost Heaven, but I didn't ever try it.
Boiling Point, has car phyics just good enough to be satisfying within the context of a free-roaming/sandbox game, but the game itself, is really (in my opinion) of poor technical quality. It would have been an awesome game if it just had a little more polish (but I guess that's easier said than done).
World Racing (Mercedes Benz World Racing) (TDK Mediactive / Synetic), uses streaming type technology to create huge drivable areas, but it's mainly a racing/driving simulation (you can't leave the car, nor are the worlds dynamic beyond some interesting visual effects). Also, I'm not sure if it's 360 compatable. I think it did have a sequal also, but it I didn't get to play it (it wasn't released in my part of the world).
Upcoming titles: Mafia II (obviously), White Gold (having seen Boilingpoint I'm excited about seeing White Gold). Alan Wake (I'm really looking forward to Alan Wake).
I'd love to actually buy a new system to spend a month playing these titles (but I probably won't ;))
I've officially given up gaming so I've not really investigated the new titles (I haven't played the others that oritxupolite posted).

Officially heh, you spy around the board waiting for the release of Mafia 2 so you can hide away from your spouse \ gf while playing it :p
Anyway thanks for the suggestions, but I was also wondering if people actually would wish we would have the option of playing these games in first person, keeping it relevant to Mafia 2.
Couse when I played Mafia and GTA III I also hoped I would see a 1 person view in a game like that someday.
Coming to think about it "Farcry 2" looks like a nice title in that way.

I don't like 1st person (bud it's not bad...) and 1st person in Mafia is like banjo in metal..... :D
But maybe there will be switching like in SWJK: Jedi Outcast....

Alan Wake (I'm really looking forward to Alan Wake).
Alan Wake will defently be a great game. Just as good as Mafia 2 or even better. It's graphical engine is a leap in technology for today's standards.

It looks like it's being targeted at a more mature market (maybe even for people who wouldn't otherwise play) and I'm really hoping that's the case. I love the medium, it's just that the prducts are produced almost exclusively for children (very frustrating).

I'm still waiting for Alan Wake too, but Mafia II is number one in my heart, maybe it's besause of 2k Czech developers team, you know they from The Czech Republic, I'm from there too and I've ever loved Mafia game. I'm probably patriot in that way.
I'm also waiting for ARMA 2.

Alan Awake looks like a beast of a game, and something definitely worth pre-ordering. Whens it due?

well i to am a BIG fan of the Hitman series as there's nothing like it out there and it's main character (Agent 47) is easily one of the best (if not the best) character in a video game out there (im also a BIG fan of Hitman themed movies to (just like mob themed ones) like "Leon" (1994) 133min version as that's one of my very very very top movies in general and i also like "Collateral" (2004) alot to etc etc)
but i DO NOT want a game like MAFIA/GTA to go 'first person' as it would pretty much ruin the feel of the games.
also about that 'alan wake' crap... i think it pretty much has ZERO chance at being a better 'game' than MAFIA2 cause even if it's graphics are amazing im still betting it will lack what MAFIA 2 will have which is great characters and great feel to the game... and as far as it's (Alan Wake) 'major graphics leap', the last time i seen that was DooM3 on the PC ... BUT that was in Nov 2002 (the Alpha DEMO that leaked) cause by the time it was actually in stores in 2004 alot of other games caught up with it and it was not nearly as impressive visually wise by 2004 but it was still top notch just nothing MAJOR like it was when i seen the alpha demo back in Nov2002 as it was dang near a quantum leap forward in graphics dept vs games of those days.... cause that was basically the last time i was like "WOW" on the graphics cause since then i aint seen no MAJOR graphics boost just decent ones here and there since then..... so overall i aint expecting to much from alan wake in graphics dept cause i seriously doubt it will be THAT much better visually than games like Crysis (which as of right now is probably one of the higher end graphics games on the PC overall)

From what I have read about "Alan Wake" it seems very exciting.
It looks out to be a dark hardcore psychological thriller really so there is no comparison to "Mafia 2".
And coming from the makers of "Max Payne" I at least give them the benefit of the doubt.
I think it will be a very nice gaming experience, but totally different.
And with 1 rst person I don`t mean exclusively, I mean as an added option.
The hitman series for example have a toggle between 1 \ 3 person view I don`t see anything wrong with that.

also about that 'alan wake' crap...
Your wrong judging Alan Wake like that. Devs of this game intent to make it as real as possible, same as Mafia 2 devs try to. Alan Wake will future a very deep story that will try to move players hearts and as ArchangelX pointed out, devs from Max Payne (the legendary game) are making this game so it will be great. I would at least try to find more about it, this game is not all about graphics, it's about a deep story too.
