i am still working on tournament details, but i am planning to have events on both platforms.

the games for both North American and Europe will be the same, however, we are planning gift-with-purchase bonuses for people in North America!

With my experience with console games, yes, but you need to look for PAL instead of NTSC... but I don't know how the PS3 reader works, 95% chance it is the same... look it up.

People not in North America will get the game on time but will be unhappy that they dont get to partake in the tournament or potentially get prizes.

People in North America might get gifts (seems like everyone in North America should get one if we are waiting an extra month), but at the same time have to wait an additional month.

Perhaps I see it this just because I'm a pessimist :cool:

Regardless, the tournament sounds pretty interesting and it is good to see that Firaxis is taking steps towards establishing a strong multiplayer backing. Too often do game developers just toss in a multiplayer and hope it blossoms.

i want to say that this is not part of any marketing campaign. i actually don't like the delay just as much as you -- and am honestly bummed that i won't get my hands on the game for another month. i, too, am dying to get the achievements and play online with my friends.

the heart of the matter is that we decided to give the DS version extra time so that it could be polished and perfect. and different countries and territories deal with how they like to release games differently, and in north america, simultaneous releases are very important, so we're waiting for the DS to be ready.

but since i hate to wait, and we're going to have a demo out anyway, i'm going to do my best to make contests, giveaways, and tournaments through the demo so that those who are waiting still have fun with the game.

i hope that makes a bit more sense for you!

yes, we would never delay a game for something like a tournament. i'm running the tournament because of the delay -- as a little diversion as we all wait!

the DS version is the one we are spending this extra time on -- but that's not to say the 360 or PS3 versions are inferior, because they aren't. i'm sure you already know that each platform has its own unique challenges during development, and since each had its own separate team, the DS one simply developed differently, warranting this extra time.

there won't be split screen mode. you can play multiplayer either over a LAN or online through both the 360 and PS3. multiplayer modes include head-to-head, 2 vs 2, or free for all.

on the DS, the same modes apply, and you can play online or with other people in the same room who have Civilization Revolution on their DS.

the release date in the US is changed because the DS version took extra time, and in the US we are releasing all 3 games simultaneously, and thusly, had to wait for the DS to be ready for release!

the gifts and contests are to make up for these couple weeks of waiting. :-)

ya, it ships 1 week after the original ship date for Civ:Rev. I am wondering if that had anything to do with pushing the release date back too. But anyway it's nice to see that a company can set a release date and stick to it, way to go KONAMI.

2k can postpone the game all they want, IMHO. I feel like firaxes is a lot like blizzard in that way, the longer we wait the more polished the final product will be.

Blizzard well makes up for long wait times/cancellations in well supported games; well balanced and minimal bugs when first released, and long term support to improve balance/bugs.

Well thats just my opinion on Blizzard. I'll admit they have many of my friends hooked and I did love Star Craft and War Craft, but I don't subscribe to WoW, don't really have the time. Its good they support their games :) From what I can tell we should get as good or better support with the Civ guys, or at least I hope so.

Althought i do hope its not a repeat of Railroads. Damn good game let down by an annoying crash to desktop bug every 3-4 hour. Althougth it was quickly patched i'd much rather a game be delayed rather than relased with known bugs (unknown bugs i can cope with :D )

Yes, as far as we know, the US and European versions of Civilization Revolutions will be identical regardless of when they ship. :)

I'm new on this forum and am a huge fan of every game of the Civilization series.

I'm from Europe and I think it's great that CivRev is released here somewhere in June. But here's my question:
Does this mean that the US version and the European version aren't going to be similar to each other? In your release date change announcement you mentioned a demo for the people from the US and Canada. While the fact that we don't get that demo doesn't really bother me, I'm asking if the European version (which is gonna kick ass anyway:cool: ) isn't going to be as good as the US version

There will be no differences. It was pushed back in the US so there could be more time to work on the DS version. In the US, games are typically released for all systems at the same time, while in Europe it doesnt matter.

A game being released by an American software company is going to be available in Europe, before it's available in America. Why? Because in this case, both PS3 and Xbox 360 owners (in America) are going to get punished for delays in polishing up the DS version, whereas their European counterparts suffer under no such imposition.

The cause for the delays in the DS version are, at this point, immaterial. What isn't are the delay's effects, which look to be largely predispensed from a bag of dogmatic marketing ploys - ploys that, when taken singly, might approximate a certain manner of sense, but taken in totality result in absurd preconceptions about what is right or wrong, in what a company does for and to the consumer.

Personally, I have no interest in being placated with demo distractions. Your firm has, instead, made me wish I were a European customer, for the next 45 days, rather than an American - and only hope I and the rest of your American customers on PS3s and 360s are not further held hostage, should the DS version still require additional work, yet to be announced.

I completely understand the disappointment that the game is being delayed a month in the US, and as a consumer, also understand why it doesn't exactly matter to you why we are stacking these release dates as we are, because the most important thing for you is "when do i get my game?"

I offer my explanation because you, as a gamer, deserve to know why things are happening, and why they are changing. I know I cannot, unfortunately, always make the situation 100% perfect for everyone involved. In a perfect world, every milestone would be hit perfectly, there would never be any delays in any step of this process, and everything would always deliver exactly as planned the first time. However, we know this just doesn't happen sometimes.

While tournaments, giveaways, and other challenges surrounding the demo, and during this month period are not the same as having the actual game, I am planning them all because I want you to know that I do care about this delay, and how it impacts you, the gamer, and I want to do everything in my power to make this wait fun.

No one at 2K wants to make you unhappy, or make you wait. We would never, ever make a decision that would negatively impact you, the Civ gamer, if we could choose anything else. But sometimes delays do happen. And when they happen, we try and make the best of it during that time.

Probably made by the distribution channels or agreements with the parent consoles.

Think about it. If you were Nintendo, you wouldn't be happy if the PS3 and 360 version were out and you were losing potential sales merely due to timing.

When I played Civ4: BTS I only had domination, diplomatic, and time victory conditions enabled. Because those were the only 3 that I considered to be truely legit victories.

That could be a problem, that there is a scenario where there arent enough people that want to play the game on default settings. That kinda happened with UT3 in some sense on the PS3. But if this game was much more popular than it is/probably will be, then custom settings would just be great because people could always play what they want.

they had the option of changeing the settings in all the other civ's so i dont see the probablem in keeping with tradition. and you can just host your own game if you dont like the settings of someone elses.

This is a console game. If you are not familiar with it yet, you will notice that there will be fewer players online compared to PC.

Depends on how you define closed network. You can mod UT3 without even accessing the network with the card readers for the old versions for example. PSN has access to the internet and therefore you can download it if you want to.

However, every network packet you send will be sent through PSN servers and not directly with the webserver you are visiting. Therefore you are part of the network that PSN has. They have the full control to decide what traffic you can get through and what to send back to you. If you like to call it Open because they allow passing the website information to you, then go ahead :)

What I'm saying is that your playstation alone cannot be an independant network node with the software currently available. I really dislike this system because it introduces delay and it is noticable when playing games.

But as for the question I guess its some amount of work on the interfacing with the PS3 as well. I take it PSN takes care about routing information for every client playing a game, but I do not have access to the API so I cant know for sure. But this means that you cant just identify my playstation console and start sending network traffic to it.

xbox exclusive games take longer to come out because the companys take the time to put in detail, ps3 has the capabilty to have better graphics but the companys dont take the time to put in the details :( lazyness:( but games for ps3 and 360 both come out at the same time.

The demo comes out tomorrow (I guess "today", technically, which is Thursday) so you'll have plenty to do until July. :D

Hmmm. I can understand the main idea that you want your game to be attractive for the resellers as well as the customers, so that you can launch and sell more products in that area (brings more customers than the hardcore ones that import). However its kind of sad when publishers decide not to release a game in a certain region and you can't play it because of that.

i want to say that we are not treating americans/canadians as lesser at all. as an american, i can say this with certainty. of course world wide releases are optimal, but often times actually europe gets a release weeks or months after the us/canada. this time it just happens to be flip flopped.

please don't think it's because anyone is lesser -- this is not the case. the game will be here on july 9th, and then we can all get a chance to play!

i just checked, and the swedish store is either mistaken, or getting a delayed shipment somehow, because sweden IS receiving the game on June 13th. all PAL versions go out then, including to new zealand and australia.

The PS3 released in the US in November, we got it in the UK at teh END of March, so lets count... November, 1, December, 2, January, 3, Feburary, 4, March, 5.... that's five months just for the PS3 and the games on the system. And that's one example.

The EU is usually left behind in release dates, and even still we're not getting the prizes and stuff that Elizabeth has got in store for you. It's NOT the fault of anyone at Firaxis that they have to lauch all three simultaneously, so shouting about not getting it wont make a difference, because if a months wait makes you not want to get a game, then chances were you weren't going to get it anyway.

Also to add, you should be glad for the months wait. I have MGS4 and Civ Rev waiting for me at home from tommorow, and I wont know what to play frist... you guys get a whole month with MGS4 and only MGS4... damn both games being soo amazing...

Well I just finished my first game on chieftain diff. Scored a bunch of achievements in the process. Really enjoyed it. It's Civ alright but lite, very lite. In the beginning I had to pay the Arabs lot's of gold to wage war with the Britains or English. Since I chose to focus on science and culture. The latter payed of nicely. Because by the the time the other civ's became seriously annoying - give this tech or else. I possed the ability to built fighters (jets).
I was able to discover the manhattan project - awesome! To bad you can only built one.

Here are some plusses and minuses

+ very addictive
+ really easy to get into
+ alot of things to discover
+ alot of different ways to play

- I would have liked to be able to zoom into the city a little more
- scrolling down the civ pedia with rs takes forever

I have not expercienced any slowdown or techinical difficulties whatsoever with my 360 copy of the game.

Yeah, I have been wondering the same: Has the release date for Sweden changed for some reason? Every store I looked at/asked has 20 june as their official date. Is this true?

I'm seeing different release dates again, one of the my local stores said that the release date would be 16th of June, then few tell me that it's 20th of June and then there's still some stores with release date of 13th of June. Official information would really be appreciated...

I just spoke to the largest danish website distributor of games and their representant found all this just as weird as we do. Apparently there's a problem with the importer in some PAL territories and they seem to have the power to decide when a game will be released in their respective region. I kept on asking questions though and then suddenly he said that his chief just got fed up with the importer and decided to sell the game tommorrow even though the importer wanted otherwise. It's still the PAL version but I think it might be the British version of the game they will be selling. So there's still hope :p

When conducting diplomacy you have the option to discuss world affairs. If a civ doesn't like a particular others civ he might declare war on them if you asked them to do so at a price. If you are a democracy you can't just declare war on another party. So you pay for instance the Arabs to wage war for you. In that way you can have civs keep fighting while you conduct research and get the Manhattan Project. It's funny as soon as I finished the Manhattan Project nobody bothered me. Still you always have to nuke some civ. Because it's a total waste if you don't. Chieftain and King dif are doable the rest is becomes rather competetive. I really enjoy the game. I am not even thinking about not having a PS3 to play MGS4 on. I am only hungering for more civ. And I still have so much homework to do. And tonight I gotta work. Darn. Just not enough time.

However it seems that Sweden have some supply problems or if the above is true, problems with some distributor who says its the 20th, but nonetheless, the OFFICIAL release date is tommorow.

This isn't the first time Finnish/some Nordic distribution screws up here. With GTA IV, half of the shipment came late and Condemned 2 got here a week or 2 weeks late. Those two were latest ones.

I never said its 2K's fault. I'm asking for an explanation of the situation. It is 2K Games that is the distributor of the game, and therefore they should have the interest and means of getting it out there. What I'm saying is that they can probably get in contact with whoever is slowing the shipment down, and tell us users why.

You can probably add at least 1 more day to those 8. The 20th is Midsummer Eve which means more or less every store is closed. If you are really unlucky you might not get it until the 23rd if you don't have access to a store that is open on Sundays.

As to why the game is late we might get a clue from the Dutch version pictured above.... country specific covers and booklets. It's easy to see how one or a few countries get the game delayed because of delay in printing or something similar.

Europe isn't just France and the UK... there still no stores in Denmark that have the game in stock (and judging from different forums, the game isn't out in most european country's... most country's in europe say June 20-27th now)

They're losing tons of potential buyers atm, the ppl at few other forums I visit have like gone mad and saying that this is ridiculous and won't buy the game anymore, unlike in the Netherlands where you get games 2 days earlier than the official release date. I wonder when they start treating the nordic countries equally...

I'm fairly sure that they've published the game and dispatched them, so asking them 'why it's been delayed' isn't going to help, because it HASN'T been delayed. There may be a problem with the delivery, but I'm sure they're working hard and fast to resolve it. But the game hasn't been delayed so getting annoyed about it, isn't going to help.

please know what you are talking about before saying things like that...they are asking about Europe, not America...in Europe it was supposed to come out June 13th in every country, but some countries seem to think that they won't be getting any until the 20th or later.

Second, the reason it is July 8th in America, is because in America it is SOP to release all versions of a game at the same time...the DS version wouldn't be ready until July 8th, so the 360 and PS3 versions were moved to July 8th as well.

Thirdly, capitalism doesn't rule most European countries...
