Hi,

I'm new around here, but played Mafia for a long time!!

But here my question:

Since they've been talking about saving on serveral places instead of one, is Mafia 2 Free-roam, like The Godfather, or the same as Mafia, playing a mission, saving and the next mission begins..?

Thanks in Advance.

I definitely like system as it was in first mafia.

Hi, welcome to the forums!

Quite hard to answer your question, it is still unclear ... but it's confirmed that while it has some free-roam features, it's still a linear, story driven game. But thats in general, there is still no word about save system or things like this. While I'm personally not expecting something like GTA: San Andreas type of "save-houses" for Mafia II, there might be a "break" between missions when you can take a car and explore the city/spend your money :).

yop..i think we could enjoy few freeworlds features after mission is completed, like in M1 the Bertone's sidequest and if someone wants to have fun in gta-style he easily could start play ride mod...

I'm actually dreading that they go GTA on this and have Free roam. What made Mafia great was that the missions where Tommy's story. So if you DIED you had a viable reason for restarting the mission. GTA is ridiculous. I get blown up and survive. *rolls eyes* I now, it's a game, but Mafia II does not need to be reduced to crap because the developers feel "this" or "that" just to keep up with other games.

Mafia is a serious interactive cinematic story experience. GTA is not serious at all (GTA4 might be, but not in the past). Mafia was an amazing game and does not need to be influenced by GTA or Godfather features. (Although I will say CJ's ability to climb over walls, and the GTA4 guys ability to smash car windows sound good). But keep single player linear, and keep Free roam as a separate feature. PLEASE.

Nicely put. It's way more realistic when you die, you actually die rather than, end up in hospital :p. Mafia for me eats GTA alive, and craps it out, but hey it's just my opinion, I still love GTA.

thats another thing that i loved in Mafia and i hope they keep it the same
way in the sequel ... not only it is real fun to have the free roam it also adds
a huge amount of Value to the game itself ... so linear + free-roam ... :)

i say do it like godafther, keep the story as the main point but i still want the ability to roam around the city and go kill mombstters and start mob wars.

or have a mission given to you and then go out into the free roam and tlak to a start charecter neer the actual mission to start it.

IMO there's nothing worse than a game where you can only play the story and thats it.

I like to be able to have a story line but is kept open ended by side missions besides the real objective.

I also hope Mafia also doesn't have that loading area thing in it like the first one did.

It took AGES to load on PS2 and then I find I have to go back over the bridge and it has to load for ever again.

Do not worry about loading screens anymore. In Mafia 2 the game will load only in 2 situations.

1.) When you start the game.
2.) When you load a save game.

Also if you walk into the apartment of Joe, the game doesn't load. Because it loads during driving, walking through the map from part to part. You can walk into a cafe without loading.

Somewhere i found this preview, don't remember where. Maybe i'll find it soon and i post it than.

Regards, Dark-Wolf.

Yeah the above stated is true according what I have read as well.
No loading this time, and you can enter a shop for example without loading and see the gamingworld act out through the shop window.
Meaning you will see the same thing looking out the window as you would if you would stand on the curb outside. Sounds great.

More on the topic, the main story is already confirmed to be along the lines as the original but with some added content as the player will have more choices this time around in how one chose to interact with the gamingworld.
Like the "respect-meter" we have read about.

So the mainstory will be strong and linear (though a bit less I personally think then the original one) which is a good thing.
The free-roam part of the game though as of now looks to me to be ALOT better then it was in the original which is maybe the most important improvement in my opinion.

The original was great in regards to the story but while the free-roam part was fun for a while there was no real sence of PURPOSE. And a more direct purpose that could prolonge the free-roam experiance is something I hope we get this time around, couse then in a way it would add a somewhat non-linear aspect to that part of the game.

While it sounds great, I have a feeling we will need like 4 gb of DDR2 :) ... all this little detalies that make the game feel more real will need a very good hardware.

And that's why it's great the game will be released in 2009! So we can collect our moneys for a powerful system :D

I think most part of the game (around 75%) should be linear because Mafia has a story to tell and, in order to understand that story properly, the game must be linear. If they allow the player to play the missions in which order he (the player) wants most gamers won't understand too much from this game. Maybe they should make only the last 3-4 missions max with different endings or to influence the outcome of the last mission, but the first 15-16 missions from 20 should be linear without different endings.

I agree with you, I am ok with linear, I want to understant and feel the story...linear means more like a movie, not linear is more like gta...

I have 4Gb DDR2!

I like the system is in Mafia as well. Make it lineair. Between some missions there should be some room for free-roam, but not between every mission. It's just not fun.

So Long As It Isn't An Old Style Game Where You HAVE To Select A Mission And Or Lose If You Stray Off.

I hope it is free play (I like free play better) but they could be using the same system as the first Mafia:mad: Honestly I hope they use a more GTA 4 type of system.

Although I liked how was the first game made, I prefer free-roam.
