View Full Version : Conflicting information in previews on the size of "Empire City"

I have read several of the latest previews and one of the things that I noticed was that Gamereactor the Scandinavian gamers magazine have printed that the city in "Mafia 2" will be about 70% the size of "Lost Heaven",
though on the other hand OPM and Gameradar both say that it will be about twize the size ?
The size of the playable area, driving etc means alot to me, and I hoped that it would expand from the original and at least not reverse in size.
On the other hand the graphics looks so good that it is understandable if it is the case but I just wanted to say that there is conflicting information on it.

Three sources (LEVEL, PSM, EGM) says Empire City is double size of Lost Heaven, one (GameReactor) says Empire City takes 70% of Lost Heaven area ... absolutley clear situation for me :-)

Thanks alot for sharing this with us. Just one more confirmation, JUST the city is 10miles? or Country side Included (i.e the whole playable area in Mafia II) is 10miles?

You are more than right with 16 square kilometers Memphis (wich is just twice a size of Lost Heaven) :-). And ... I think I can add for everyone that Empire City is devided into 20 different quarters, each with its own architectonic style - some are more industrial, while the other ones are typical urban areas such as blocks of flats, city centre with skyscrapers, or even suburb areas (with lots of back-streets, stairways ...).
For now, we know three quarters by name: Little Italy (what a hell, sounds more than familiar :o) ), Sand Island (described suburb area) and Millville (industrial zone - tons of nipping iron, old factories etc.).
What's next in Empire City? Golden Gate, Brooklyn's bridge, big foundry, observatory, fastfoods, restaurants, coffee-bars, shops selling clothes - and that everything you can enter, use, buy, shoot into pieces ... whatever :-)

Sounds great, I bet it will be very diverse but in a good way.
I loved the way it was layed out in "Lost Heaven" and with 20 different quarters

it's 10 square miles!
10 square miles = 25 km²
___
San Andreas = 35 km²
So it means that the Mafia 2's game area (Empire City) will be about 2/3 of San Andreas which is absolutely GIANT !

It is in SQUARE so there is a biggest multiplicater...
I did that converting on several websites SQUARE MILES 2 SQUARE KILOMETERS and the result was always: 10 mi² = 25 km²
So I'm right.

ArchangelX
04-14-2008, 11:59 AM
Well "Lost Heaven" must have been around 8 km2 since Tetref quoted from the magazine that "Empire City" will be 4 x 4 = 16 km2 which would be twize the size 0f "Lost Heaven".

has a countryside area been confirmed/denied for Mafia II? Because if Mafia II is 70% of Mafia ...but it is all city... that will be far bigger in terms of actual driving space.

As far as I know they have only commented on the size of Empire City which of course leaves the opertunity that we still might get a countryside.
All screens so far though hint only at an urban setting.
I hope we get one too of course, but I won`t mind if we "only" get a city now that I know it will be twize the size of Lost Heaven.
Though "A trip to the countryside" is easily one of the most atmospheric missions in Mafia :)

So what if they have these features, the thing they exist in other games too doesn't make them bad. I like that in Vice City for example you could buy property, and I would also like it in Mafia, why not?

I really hope that there will be a countryside.
Imagine a chase in a 50´s car that starts in the city and ends somewhere far away from everything. It´s dark outside and you hunt your enemy on empty country-roads... After you have smashed him up against the fence there will be no witnesses when you shoot him down and throw the corps downhill.

I sure would want too, I wonder how it is designed.
Maybe it will only be a small part on the edge in one of the corners in the map, or maybe stretched out surrounding the city on three sides.
I think one side will be sea, since we have seen the harbor on some screens.

I think a coutryside will be also important for a story part of the game as it was in Mafia.
But still it's not the most important part, so the coutryside will be just smaller.
There could be some nice scenes. Somebody said(wrote) Mafia II is partly inspired by The Goodfellas, so I think one of those movie scenes could be imitate.

That's what I'm saying - the countryside won't be so huge and important as it was in Mafia.
I was reacting on this: Who the hell want's a countryside lol But I was also saying that the countryside will be also important (in part) for the game.
but can you imagine the beauty of the countryside that will be on mafia 2?
Of course I can. That nature in Mafia was really great, but I'm sure that I didn't spend so much time inthere. I was there because of missions and sometimes (but still sometimes) even I was't playing a tale part of the game - in free-ride.

yes ofcourse.
Goodfellas is one of my favourite movie (beside The Godfather Trilogy).
i remember when they stopped at DeVito's mother's house to collect a knife. DeVito's mother made 'em meals, chat and have some breakfast while the critically wounded Batts was still in the trunk.
upon arriving at an isolated countryside, the Conway, Hill and DeVito opened the trunk of the car, killed Batts, and buried him there. in c o u n t r y s i d e. hahahaha that's why i love countryside.

In many clauses it will be written that city in the size to 2,5 miles and who that speaks that the city will be twice more Lost Heaven.Elizabeth has told that 10 (!) miles. To whom to trust, who will precisely explain me a situation, I have got confused!
P.S 10 miles it not seem to you that too much? With such graphics Developers will manage to work such area? I do not want that the city was dead...
Thanks for understanding:(

i think the one you have to trust is Elizabeth she question to the developers and the developers give her the true information so i think that it will be 10 miles and i think and enshure you that the hole city will be full of life ...not for nothing the developers delayed ALMOST 5 YEARS!! ;) OR MORE i dont know exactly but ...god the developers are crazy :D

Yeah, I was quite dissapointed while playing Mafia with a small city, but I think Empire City will be just fine.

10 sq. miles is better than the first Mafia but it still not that big. Just Cause is a lot bigger. I have it for PS2 and I think on the back cover it says over 800 sq miles. This link mentions over 1200 sq miles. :)

Just dont make it to big. I personally like to get familiar with the city.
I appologize for making this comparision, but I just recently bought GTA 4, which is a pretty good game but at first, yout pretty much get frustrated because your are simply LOST in that town.
After like 30h of playtime, I still have MAJOR difficulties finding my way to given löocations without taking a closer look at the GPS system all the time.
So don't make it too big. The player's got to get right in, get himself familiar with the city over a certain period of time.
Making the city too big will get me frustrated.
By the way... :D ... I know Lost heaven as good as own wallet :D
