View Full Version : Does 2K Games benefit from my pre-order?

This is a question for any professionals in the video games industry:

Does the developer or publisher receive any tangible benefit or incentive when a customer pre-orders a game from GameStop or Amazon?

I use the word "tangible" specifically to distinguish any emotional or ego boost when seeing that "Hey! We just pre-sold 250k copies of this game."

I am very excited for the June 3rd release date of Civilization Revolution and very much would like to see this game succeed both critically and comercially. I haven't yet pre-ordered this game, mostly because I don't beleive the game will sell out on the first day, and also because it seems a lot of games I pre-ordered in 2007 got delayed after my pre-order. Example Grand Theft Auto IV, Rock Band, Lair, etc. I swear I must be cursed or something.

From Firaxis or Take-Two's perspective, should I Man-Bear-Pig, the consumer, pre-order this game? Or does it not make any difference?

There is probably a huge logistic benefit to preorders. My guess is that it really helps 2K know how many games to ship and to where.

it's kind of complicated, but yes, in many ways, we do benefit from your pre-orders.

but as long as you are happy and enjoy the game, i'm happy for you to buy it whenever and however you choose!

I too, have been debating whether or not to pre-order. I know I want this game, but I am worried that with it's E-10+ rating that there won't be any serious competition online. Like 5-10 yr olds, cause of the rating and their parents thought it would be educational. I have my fingers crossed though that this will be the strategy game of the year. If not I hope endwar and RA3 are good on the PS3. Geez how cool would it be if all 3 were good ? AWESOME... And that's really sad that it's like gambling when you buy a game. And the odds are stacked against you. I buy like maybe 2 or 3 games a year, just because 98% of what comes out is crap. PURE CRAP to be exact. Luckily I haven't really been burned on the PS3, but then again I only own 6 PS3 titles, 4 on BD, and 2 PSN titles. When I am not working or getting nagged by the wife, I am constantly playing video games and have been for 36 years. I started on Pong and hopefully will end on something much better. Sorry I am ranting, but it's sad that there's alot more suckage released than actual quality titles. I guess it really sucks for people who are still so stupid they buy games based on movies, but that's another post and or forum all together. :)

Well if it is beneficial then i think I will go preorder both the 360 and the DS versions. I cannot wait until June!

Maybe if you cancel, they'll change it back... It's worth a try... :D
