Netflix missed shipping me a movie by 1 day and gives me some money off from my next bill (not much, but the problem was insignificant), microsoft can't connect me to their online service for almost a month and gives me a game that I haven't played.

so, you actually would prefer a 5% discount on your next purchase, which either drives you to buy a lot of stuff in one go to really make use of that discount or comes down to probably 50 cent or 1$, over a free game? Odd. I would check out the game at least. But I guess the simplest payback for those outages would have been to give every customer a free month for XBox Live?

no, it wasn't credit towards a free purchase. It was 5% of my bill back to me. Their service was down for about 4% of the billing period, so they refunded me for that time. Xbox Live was down for about 10% of the billing period, and I got no money back.
I did check out the game before it was free. I played the trial, and wasn't impressed.
