Maybe I missed it but what were the smugglers smuggling?
There doesn't seem to be any drug use in rapture but maybe there was before ADAM.
In Neptune there was alot of Chritianity stuff all over the place and some was labeled as "evidence". I think it would be interesting if the smugglers were smugging religion into Rapture. That seems like it would have pissed of Ryan. And there were Jesus crazed splicers....was there any story to how this came about. I bet there was a story about it but was removed.

Religious stuff. Interesingly, only Christian - no Jews, Buddists, etc. in Rapture?

They were smuggling a lot of things; Bibles and crosses mostly.

Yeah, that's true. There WAS a lot of religious stuff down there. Also, splicers would walk around talking to themselves saying, "Father, why have you forsaken us!" and other stuff like, "...we have shed/shone(?) away from the light" (something like that) maybe by father they meant God?
Any comments or opinions on this?

Were they not smuggling liquor (hooch) and cigs also? Stuff like that? They were probably smuggling anything and everything (as smugglers often do). That is why Ryan wanted them gone.

yea if you happened to look in some of the crates on the neptunes bountry level you can see bibles and crosses...also not sure what level its in but at the beginning of one of the levels there is a man that was hanged and is stretched out on a pole to make it look like he was crucified. Ryan wasnt exactly fond of religion

Oh yeah! I had forgotten all about that one! I always wondered, why are they talking about Jesus and bibles, and there's crates of bibles and crosses when it was supposed to be a place where there was no Gods. But I never really pieced them together. But yeah, that one was creepy! After they say that, they pause and say, "Huh? Who's there!" and keep talking and then they see you and attack you. :p

Some of the contraband also included films made outside of Rapture. You can see some of these up in the Wharfmaster's office in Neptune's Bounty. There are some film reels in a crate entitled, "Evidence".

We can do some pretty funny things when we're trapped in a crisis we cannot escape. So we [sometimes] turn to God.

If you are talking about the man in the beginning of Neptunes Bounty, I don't think that is a religious action. Above him it's written smuggler(if I remember corectly), so it would more be Ryans action against the smugglers.

I think that's what he was implying, that Ryan wasn't fond of religon, and the smuggler was smuggling religon in. So he got killed.

Yeah, it couldn't just have been bibles and other religous items - people were pretty much cut off with contact with the surface. Anything could have been smuggled in, newspapers, books, photos, films etc. The bathsphere Ryan blows up was probably an illegal one that was used to get to the surface.
I also think that Fontaine must've had a contact on the surface that was able to get them these things.

Not sure where I remember hearing it, but I had read that a lot of the smuggled goods were coming from places like Boston and New York.
New York definitely seems to make sense to this lad, because Fontaine spoke with a very thick Bronx accent. So it was no doubt he was from that area, and had connections there.
Maybe they were smuggling in Red Sox/Yankee merch...oh Fontaine, you devil you!
