View Full Version : Modifying the environment with available resources

The recent 360xine article had a blurb in it regarding the usual electricity - fire - water reactions and their resulting effects.
Are there any truly dynamic ways of laying traps for enemies? I hate to use catchwords, but I'd love it if some 'emergent' techniques could be seen, using anything & everything Rapture has to lay booby traps in places already secured by the player. Imagine the hardware store and what you could do with its varying tools.
An example I just concocted when reading the interview: Fool enemies by making them think that a pool of liquid is water when it is actually gasoline, or even yourself adding a canister’s amount to a pool of water. I can't imagine an enemy taking their time to determine why there is a funky smell & rainbow colors in the liquid when they're ablaze.

I would have liked to have seen Bioshock feature no actual 'built' weapons at all (like the Shogun we saw renders for last month), so the player must assemble everything they need to protect themselves from assorted junk you find laying around. This would, of course, include using the environment to form traps like you imagine. Or even just simple things like combining two chemicals, a jar, a pile of nails and some string to produce a rudimentary shrapnel bomb.
I kinda had the impression this was where they were going with Bioshock (I dunno why - maybe just a case of an over-exited PC Zone preview full of hyperbole), but recent pictures suggest bespoke weaponary with a simple modular upgrade system. Although the Big Daddy video with the Flaming Teddy of +10 Comedy Potential is a refreshing reminder that Bioshock will still allow you to be inventive.
I certainly love the idea of being able to construct my own methods of dealing with the bad folk of Rapture. Imagaine the stories you could tell...

someone one should make a thread to discuss what kind of traps you would build if you could build them:D

Yeah, I was kinda mulling that idea over, but I'm too busy at work right now to think of anything good to start the topic off...

If you could somehow get a splicer's body into a lift (either drag it, or manipulate the splicer into the lift before you attack), you could send the lift down a floor to where a Little Sister might be playing and have her skip over to the body when the doors open. Then call the lift so that the doors close and the Little Sister is delivered right to you sans BD (where I'll be waiting with a teddy bear ;) ).

a little dark but I love the idea and would love to be able to give the LS some candy in for form of hot led...:)

What about physical traps. If I'm out of ammo, could I take one of those vending machines and push it down the stairs to crush an enemy? Or maybe set up a swinging trap with a big ass weight on the end, then when an enemy comes along cut the rope and push it off a cliff.

A couple of really good ideas here, useful with those who have the patience to try them out in-game, rather than just run & gun/plasmid. I think the means of how to separate the LS from the BD will become an interesting chat topic, seeing how inventive or awkward players will attempt to separate them.
Now where is an actual developer? Why hath they forsaken us :p

We need a Quake Plasmid ;)
I think the means of how to separate the LS from the BD will become an interesting chat topic, seeing how inventive or awkward players will attempt to separate them.Hopefully there might be a few creative (maybe context sensitive) methods for doing so, rather than just a plasmid; although that would still be pretty cool (hiding in plain sight has a mood all of its own).
Now where is an actual developer? Why hath they forsaken us :pKen's posted here a couple of times, but it seems the 'un-official, official BioShock forum' is at ttlg.com
Maybe if we hassle 2k'beth about it she might ask them to support http://forums.2kgames.com by posting here instead of at Looking Glass ;)
Having said that, it might make some of the ttlg.com community migrate over here, which probably wouldn't be that great (ttlg.com seems to be full of griefers and trolls) :/
Hopefully when the wheels of the PR machine get up to speed a few more people might log on.

I would love to take a very small room, and put some gas canisters inside, and when the enamy wanders inside, I would pull a switch, enamy freaks, and slowly, the gases inside suffocate the enamy.

How about a walk in freezer, or a sauna.
Hitman had a context-sensitive kill with a sauna.

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: As just one of many examles, you can ta -- muffled sounds of designer being gagged and dragged away...

*wonders if he should put in an application for designer at Irrational*

What about using some of the other critters as objects?
Two things come to mind:
Playing piggy-back with a Big Daddy yelling "Big Daddy rules Thunder...Rapture"
or
Using telekinesis plasmid or just physical strength to "steal" a Little Sister causing an enraged Big Daddy to follow me like a bull through a group of Splicers.

Thant kinda reminds me of my favorite GTA sub-game:

Don't laugh. You've all done it...;)

So? They could build portions of the bathysphere around an underwater ridge. It'd be quite the engineering feat keeping it airtight around rock formations, but totally doable.

actually, not so.
having a vertical fixing to the earth under water in a high pressure environment will mean that the weight of the water will make the contact areas crumble, and also slightly squeeze the sphere kind of like a rubber ball.
you all would've tried to keep a cup suctioned to your mouths right? well what happens if you decrease the volume of the cup by squeezing it? the lower pressure inside the cup gets higher (smaller volume) and so the cup won't hold over your mouth very well.
whereas, the sphere only attached to the ground means that even if there is a leak, not a lot of the air inside the sphere will escape through the bottom.
however instead of cliffs, we have already seen balconies (recall the grenadier on the balcony in the hunting the big daddy video).
