View Full Version : Do's and Don't's For Off-Topic Threads

hey guys,

in the last couple weeks i've noticed a couple trends in this forum which i don't like.

1. don't post really, really controversial topics. religion, politics, stuff like that is hard enough to have a civil conversation about face-to-face, and on a gaming forum over the internet, good very rarely comes of it. if you want to chat with someone about these topics, please do it one-on-one and don't make a thread. if you have a question about what topic is okay to post about, and think it might be controversial, PM me or a mod and they will let you know if you can go ahead with it.

2. quantity DOES NOT mean quality. don't post dozens of replies that don't have any real meaning to them. your post count does not matter. if it bothers you to have a low post count, i'll disable the part of this forum that let's you see it. i want good discussions, not tons of one-line posts that say nothing.

3. making threads without searching to see if the topic has been created is spammish and will put you at the top of the list to get banned. USE THE SEARCH BUTTON. like halo 3? awesome. but we've talked about it. jump into that conversation -- you don't gain points by starting threads. and if you DO start a new thread, make sure the topic is actually worth talking about, and you aren't just doing it because you want your name under "created by".

4. please remember we are a varied community here, and don't post NWS stuff here -- be it graphic, sexual, violent, etc.

any questions, please post them here, and i'll try and answer. (these rules go for all other forums, i just see these issues the most here.)

thanks!

And yes, we do actually have a list.

You'd be amazed on how well we keep tabs on all of you.

On an unrelated note:

Locke, you see that "TV Station" van outside your house?
Well I'll tell you it ain't there to get the news. ;)

EDIT: Also every one on these forums pretty much does an AMAZING job at being productive/not evil.
Everyone is very proud of you guys.

That would be awefully freaky if a TV van was outside, considering we live way out in the country and up a long gravel road.

What is blank slate.

how does this reputation system work?

Alright, so how off topic can we be? Lets say I wanted to start a "cute story about lizards" thread and it contained no controversial material whatsoever (maybe lizards are the hot topic these days, I don't know), would it be closed for being utter nonsense?

Well, if it got off-topic, then yeah. The thing about those ridiculous threads it that they often do get off topic, or they fall into chaos...
But hey, if you REALLY want to talk about lizards, click the PM button. :D lol

Reputation is just a way for users to say if they do or do not approve of another user it has no real bearing on your status on the boards.

How it works is explained more in this thread.

There's a good explanation from 2K Elizabeth all the way at the top of the forum here (http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/announcement.php?f=34). That might help.

I think a good rule of thumb is, "Will this thread topic foster discussion, or is it a way to kill time?" If you are unable to tell the difference, a good test is, "Is there any value to reading this thread from the beginning, or do only the last few posts count?"

You can see that something like a hurt/heal game thread and an add-the-next-word story thread fall into the latter category. They can be fun (for the people involved), but nobody is really discussing anything or sharing ideas--they are just tacking another post onto a thread.

Fanfic is generally okay, as long as you post it in the appropriate forum. But if you are creating a story thread where everyone adds to it, it will probably get closed.

We'd like people to walk away from the forums with something new (a new idea, a new perspective, new facts about a game, or even a new understanding of one or more of your fellow members). Time-killer threads are like empty calories. They give you a tiny, temporary rush, but that's it.

I hope that makes things clearer. :)

Alright, no time-killers. Got it. Thanks, that does make things much more clear.:D

Can a mod tell me if I'm good or bad on " The List "?
