I just realized I hadn't seen anyone except Caucasoids in the demo videos; are races other than Caucasians represented in the game?

Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are Caucasoids. Heck, even my parents are Caucasoids. I'm just curious why I haven't seen any other peoples represented in the demo videos.

I thought about that, but I'm sure they have randomized splicer skin tones or colors if you like. I think that was mentioned somewhere... I don't know why we havn't seen any yet

So, kind of like how they make African-American dolls by putting dye in the caucasian doll molds huh?

well look at the setting and date, most minority's in that era wernt exactly thought to be that bright and wernt respected, i mean no offence to anyone but you really have to look at the people of that era and their mindset

and also most "intellectual" types of that time would not have anything to do with African-Americans plus the African-American people had really no education back then because they really wernt provided with it

What lurchibald said. Minorities were not very well represented in that era, and often did not receive great educations so I'm not sure that there would be many minorities.

I can't really tell from the screenshot, but I had thought at first glance that this fine gentleman (http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/798/798719/bioshock-20070621055847568.jpg) was black (I refrain from saying "african american" because how am I supposed to know if he's from America?) althought it's probably just poor lighting :(.

But yeah I'd chalk it up to society at the time.

I agree, what would you call black people in the country of South Africa? South African-Africans?

Anyway. I think you guys are being a bit Euro-centric in your thinking. There were plenty of Persian, Arabian, Indian, Chinese, and Japanese intellectuals not withstanding the intellectuals that were from the African continent.

Of course just because someone says their idea of a place is Utopia doesn't mean that they aren't racist. So just because I would think a far thinking Utopian would include all races of man doesn't mean they would. Case in point; Hitler. While WE wouldn't think of Hitler's Third Reich as a Utopia, he probably did.

Well it didn't take too long to Godwin this thread ;).

As for being "euro-centric", it appears that Andrew Ryan only took the best and brightest from western civilization. Why? Dunno. Ask him. Euro-centric of him? Probably.

We'll, I know he loved America, so I wouldn't be suprised if most of them came from there; although I do enjoy the rich accents of Atlas and other AI

Well relax when the guys skin starts popping with postules and odd glowing warts you won't need to worry what race he is. As for the splicers.....well all of them don't even look like people anyway they remind me more of monsters. As for the whole 50's not accepting blacks thing well rapture would probably be the only accepting place if any if you have talent.

Remember, Andrew Ryan may be the leader, but he sure as hell doesn't make all the decisions or build Rapture all by his lonesome. He had help at every corner and even if he has no problem with different ethnicities I guarentee most in the 40's would ecspecially in the west.

I know some of the early artwork showed an ad for a Chinese restaurant, for whatever that's worth. :)

I hope the game addresses this topic in subtle ways. Ayn Rand wrote about minorities and discrimination so maybe it will be a topic in Bioshock. I hope it is but only if done with subtlety.

Yeah i mean we cant blatantly shove minorities in for the sake of equality, thers got to be a reason for everything.

maybe there were black/asian/hispanic waiter and manual labourers? and now they have escaped most of the fighting and instead rely on weaponry rather than plasmids after witnessing the effects it had on the whites?

Or Andrew Ryan was a raceist...
I'm sure Irrational was smart enough to add some racial diversity, or have an explination as to why everyone is caucasian.
Oh Stalker, the only people in that game are white males.

Would you expect to see non-white males in the Chernobyl area?

Wouldn't people come from all over the world to seek artifacts? Can I at least get a racially diverse scientist!?

Anyway, I added my two cents on BIOSHOCK! (let's not forget), but this thread needs to be whiped into shape.

It would be an interesting idea if Andrew Ryan (being Soviet) had some Fascist qualities about him.

A Soviet corrupted by the Nazis maybe?

LordLeckie

Uh uh, Ryan hates fascism, one of the main reasons he moved to the US form the Soviet Union, and then to rapture, he pretty much a borderline anarchist.

remember he gathered all the intellectuals he could find, if he lived in America in the 40s it'd be pretty hard to find non white intellectuals let alone non white intellectuals that can be convinced to to leave their country and build an underground city.

Though you are right, the premise does not match the argument, as Ryan was not directly affected by fascism, nor moved because of it. Soviets were communist, and he seems to vent more about their failings as the 'main reason' for his emigration to the states.

Whats the matter, Frank?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no history major or anything, but wasn't Stalin essentially fascist? Under the guise of communism maybe, but hell...what did he kill, 20 million?

Never heard him put that way. All I've read is a paranoid man who viewed collectivism as the will of the universe, and acted very totalitarian in his extreme dictatorship.

Whats the matter, Frank?

fascism: A political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government (as opposed to democracy or liberalism)

totalitarianism:A form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.)

Seems awful similar to me

Maye someone at Irrational can chime in- I'm sure they did a lot of background reading for Ryan. :D

Yes Stalin was totalatarian, and yes he did kill million (hell he even created an artificial famine in Ukraine)

But still i would call Ryan an Anarchist not in that he loves chaos but in that he thinks that "man unfettered" in the words of Ken (AKA no laws) is a god so as such i would probably think of him as an anarchist.
