This is a thread about all the (more or less) irrelevant inconsistencies in bioshock. Ok, let's start:

Since there are no people working in Rapture, how could there be electricity?

Volcanic vents power the place and since it's futuristic in that time and all they probably don't need it to be operated mauly

there are just 2 basic things that come out of a submarine vulcano:
mud and methan gas.

so if they built a generator using methan gas to produce energy, it would be

highly risky (possibly even more risky because of the pressure underwater)
and
a real mess (impurities!).

No way such a generator could deliver energy on it's own for more than a week.

Perhaps there are some "worker splicers". Where do you think the wrench came from?

Imagine having mutated engineers running after you with a Black & Decker, a nailgun, ect...

What should be there motivation to work? I mean, they are mutants, but they aren't dumb. Nobody would ever work without a good reason.

They didn't start as splicers!!!, that came after the civil war
And ENOURMOUS amounts of heat (and sulfur) also come out of undersea volcanic vents, and you get down to it, all forms of energy come from heat, so volcanic vents would work

the generators can work on their own for sure... rapture was a city full of geniuses, they certainly figured out how to build a machine cleaning itself.

I know. but they are hunting for adams, so why should they work?

for sure, but not without maintenance and it wouldn't be as efficient as you think. you know, underwater there's something called water that cools very well.

come on, your conclusion is dumb. I mean, even if they were - from a technical standpoint - as evolved as we are today, they would need workers for maintenances. Or have you ever heard about an atomic power /coal-fired plant cleaning itself?

and for the record: lots of geniuses plus unlimited resources doesn't mean they could invent anything. everything needs it's time. that's why da vinci has never built his helicopter.

Hey mabye you don't know this but guess what...

IT'S A GAME!!!!

we are talking about generators powered by volcanos... that's completely different than nuclear power/coal-fired plants. and besides everything is under water... so the cleaning process is easier.

da vinci: wouldn't compare the people from rapture to da vinci... because he was alone and rapture was a city full of bright heads...

To borrow from one of my favorite shows:

"If you're wondering how they eat and breath and other science facts,
Just repeat to yourself 'it's just a show I should really just relax"

with TV show replaced by game.

and water doesn't cool very fast, if ALL of the water is about the same temp

Also it would be efficient because most power plants work just about the same way; nuclear reaction heats water, which makes steam, which turns a turbine, which generates energy. For either oil or coal plants, just replace "nuclear reaction"

you are right. the temperature of the water is about 170°C.

but I still don't think that such a plant could work for years without maintenance. the nuclear power plant "temelin" in Czech Republic has about 1000 employees and til now, there were over 100 critical incidents.

There is always the possible as well they they created their own waterfall that provided them with hydroelectricity. It takes much less manpower and with geniuses, they could make it self-sufficient.

yea cause that water pressure and stuff it would be really strong and stuff

Oh yea and im not a nerd so im probably wrong

they could be using the ocean currents for power similar to using windmills. It would potentally work unmaintained after several years if there were engough stations and it wouldnt have the potental for catastrophic failure like nuclear power would. I think there was a project to do that in scotland or somewere.

There is always the possible as well they they created their own waterfall that provided them with hydroelectricity. It takes much less manpower and with geniuses, they could make it self-sufficient.yea cause that water pressure and stuff it would be really strong and stuffThe thing is, all the water that floods in would have to be pumped back out again, which would take more energy than the flooding in of that same water would create. It would be possible to get power from an underground waterfall, if there was some kind of geological fault (or basically a huge empty gap in the ground) underneath Rapture, so that they could channel water down in to it and have the water power turbines, but I'm not sure how feasible it is that such a big empty space could actually exist below a sea floor.

Couldn't they just be using nuclear power?

they could be using the ocean currents for power similar to using windmills.I think that actually is part of the whole Bio Shock/Rapture premise...
