Game freezes when looting money

this is the retail DVD for PC, install went well and the game runs great the only problem I've been having is sometimes when i go to loot money from a corpse or container the game freezes, when i ctrl-alt-delete back to desktop i get an error saying that bioshock has stopped working.

the error is semi consistent. for example i can save then loot/crash then reload the save and it will typically crash again. also it only seems to be money i have yet to have it happen when looting another item.

a side effect of this freeze is it will reset my graphics and controls back to default when it happens.

System:

Intel QX6700
GeForce 8800 GTX
ASUS P5W Delux
2gig ram
latest directx
newest beta display drivers. 163.76 i think

any help with this would be great or at least a way to make my control settings stop resetting.

forgot to mention this is on Vista Ultamate edt 32bit

Just to make sure it isn't the problem - some users have reported having this issue when using a "cracked" executable (a "no-CD" patch, for instance). If that's the case, reverting to a standard exe may correct the crash.

(However, other users have reported similar crashes using the standard exe, so it's just one thing to check.)

It could also be a corruption with the .exe file. What is the size of the Bioshock.exe file at the following location.

C:/Program Files/2K Games/Bioshock/Builds/Release

also what version of the game are you using (Steam or retail DVD)?
