Remember in the beginning, where the parts of the plane start crashing into Rapture? Remember the one that tore off that entire section of bridge? The Big Daddy probably was in that section at the time, and ended up finding his way out.
Now, what do you guys think will happen to the Big Daddy? Will he get attacked by a shark? Will he end up going onto land, and protecting random little girls he comes across, eventually killing her parents? Or will he find a way back into Rapture, and end up living the same, dull life he always has?

Don't you think that someone/thing has to go out to do regular matainace? Since you saw the Big Daddy using a torch to repair the tunnel in the intro it would stand to reason they can do other odd jobs to keep the city running. It also helps to have a diving suit.

I got that impression as well, that the BD's do work inside and outside. There are a few airlocks around the game, just 'cos we can't use them, doesn't mean the daddies can't.

The BD is such an iconic figure, it makes sense to have them play a larger part within Rapture, as a sort of sub-class (very 'Brave New World'), carrying out maintenance in high-risk areas, protecting the LS, maybe even (no claims as to this being substantiated) patrols of BDs guarding the seabed borders of Rapture? Unfounded yes, but a nice idea nonetheless.

Yeah, deff. Prob fit's in with Ryan's philosophy of 'useful' citizens. Maybe BD's were people he considered to be 'parasites', (the disabled or people who were ill but too poor to pay for medical treatment.) That would be dispicable but it would fit with Ryan...

I don't buy it - they were specifically designed with one purpose: protecting Little Sisters. I don't recall evidence to the contrary and most of the audio dialogues mention this. I think he's either taking a shortcut or got sucked out when part of a building failed (or 2K thought it would be cool). There is, however, the one shot as you come into Rapture where a Big Daddy appears to be working on a section of bridge though. That could very well be a 'normal' worker though (I haven't looked very closely).

I agree. I don't know if other people noticed but their were port chambers in the walls of some areas, the Big Daddy walking around outside is extremely near the port hole chamber on the wall, and thats probaby how they go outside to do maintenance. :o

Found this in the last level:

On the sides you can see some entries/exits and the dead BD has some gas-bottles close to him, maybe those were used for welding and maintenance.
Would make perfect sense imo

That reminds me of how when NASA astronauts are training, they do it in a big swimming pool.

Something else that surgests the game would have been more rich in content and story had it been finished before being relieased.

Come on Guys,
They are wearing huge armored deep diving suits with re-breathers on their backs, i think, and im going out on a limb here, that re-breathers give you the ability to breath while in an environment without air, IE Water, it also creats bubbles when you exhale, possibley leading the Little Sisters to calling the Big Daddies "Mr. Bubbles". Last but not least if your going to create a city underwater you will need construction workers who can do the job without having them drown every 2 minutes or so, and the bathyspheres wouldnt cut it for the more delicate work. Hence a large diving suit that can take the pressure, has interchangable hand tools or a rivet gun for riveting metal together, and has a breathing apparatos that provides air while underwater.
Now if you picked up most of the recorded diaries, and listened to them, you will notice that the Little Sisters did not exist right away, the city was built first without the Adam, then the Little Sisters were created, then the city started to fall apart, people started attacking Little Sisters, Big Daddies were used to protect the Little Sisters and then improved upon when they showed promise, then you crash your plane, and so starts history.

I think evidence points to the Big Daddies performing mantainence etc. Rosies have a Rivet Gun, Bouncers have a Drill.
If their only job was escort and protection why not give them something more suitable to the task?

E-Bass makes a lot more sense IMHO.

The Big daddies were never explained that well.
Where they came from, who volunteered ... hmm clarification in the sequel me thinks

I thought that big daddies sole purpose was to guard, it is odd that within a whole city there is going to be the need for people who do menial tasks.

Sounds about right.
I am at work right now, but during your descent into Rapture is there not a BD doing some welding work on one of the gangways?
