when in arcadia, there are two grottos where you come across altars, tape entries, and houdini splicers (that yell "get out of my ****ing office!"). a tape diary by langdon indicates that the abilities of teleportation and projectile attacks were gained by "drinking human blood" and "goblets of plasmids" (presumably at midnight while the moon was full) and i have a couple questions about how this was meant, and how this was taken by the gamers.
1. why a cult of saturn in a place that eschews religion?
2. did they accomplish anything else as an occult group besides mutation into houdini splicers?
3. does this explain how bosses like sander cohen have teleportation abilities? was he saturnine too? that makes sense.

your right rapture outlawed religion but fontain was smuggling in bibles and other goodies from the surface which was one of the things that started the chain reaction off that sent rapture up the creek not 100% sure on the houdini backstory though so pass i dunno

Now THIS is an interesting topic. Now, the Saturnine happen to be houdini splicers...that does NOT mean that to be a houdini splicer you must be a saturnine. As to why they exist, the fact that religion is not allowed is PRECISELY the motivation some would need to invent it. Some people are fearful without a god to praise, thus some splicers got together and invented a strange religion. Notice also that one of Fontaine's major smuggling items was the bible. You can find boxes of them. Some people simply need a higher power.

agreed science and technology was failing them so they turned to god maybe the huodini started off as "cult members only" but when the war kicked off people started stealing plasmyd idea's from each other
thus you get huodini splicers that aint saturnine
i may be wrong on this though

yeah etymologically speaking, i believe saturn is a root of satan, and the saturnian influence is definitely malevolent and challenging as astrologists understand it. its the dark planet, and a cult of saturn is brilliant, given that its more telling of the nature of these illuminati types than something cliche like a cult of neptune.
anyway, i love it. i think it adds a nice dimension to the game, even as a minor element.

i don't know if it was a religion about praising god. it may have been organized ritual, but i think it seems more about evolving, and in line with the goals of rapture in that way. which is very saturnian in and of itself.
agreed though that people do seem to need some kind of face to put on the faceless in order to be comfortable with it.

Yeah, the doctor's appraisal of the Saturnine was one of the best commentaries in the game. Did anyone else notice the wicker figures and the weird writing on the walls behind leaves before finding out about them? It really weirded me out at first.

to them it looks like their English essay, but they soo damn drunk they can't tell wtf they writing, so they just scribble and drool all over the walls, the drool pools in their caves and their magic marker glowes, and thats why their hideouts are wet and glowy.

That was an interesting part. Do you remember the analogy to them essentially being a bunch of frat boys putting back wine? (Fraternal society is a cult....hmmmm)
Anyways they all became involved with the Saturnine cult after they started to really mentally degrade from all the excess splicing. They formed a religion around their plasmid powers, instead of treating the plasmid powers as being something created by gene-splicing and genetic manipulation, they insanely believed that some sort of god, or "false idol" had granted them their powers.
Idolatry in a cultist sub-culture analogous to a fraternal society...I thought that was a fascinating little sub-plot.

I think they were drunk ass frat boys who thought it was funny to pretend they were drinkin god's nectar till everyone including them snapped, and they snapped into a cult.

Anyone have any idea what their symbols mean?

The symbols are greek astrological symbols.
I felt the Saturine element was just a salute to the Trickster from Theif, since many of the people at 2K were involved with that game. Look at the saturine masks...they are exactly modeled from the mask of the Trickster.

I think it was a salute to the thief games as well. Anyone els remember the symbols used in the 3rd one? :p All over the place in Arcadia, some are a bit covered by vines though.
Considering how you open up one small area in Arcadia ( Using the incinerate plasmid on one of the torches ) it made me think there might be more to those symbols. Like some sort of secret area or something.

Yes I know that, but some of them are the same as some of the ones used in the 3rd Thief game.

trickster pops up again in a splicer quote, "i can SEE you! ...or is that the trickster playing with my HEAD?!"
