How many games have truly terrified you? In over 20 years of gaming I've only ever been scared out of my wits on a very few occassions. The original Silent Hill is still etched in my memory and to this day remains as the finest survival horror game I've ever played..few adventures can match its magnificent unsettling atmosphere.
Of the next generation, only Condemmed has managed anything near the level of terror I felt with Silent Hill, its a masterclass in how to create a truly absorbing game experience around a really frightening premise.Using influences from David Finchers Se7en and the SAW movies, condemmed gets beneath the skin of the player, urging him forward, but at the same time creating almost unbearable tension,so as to cause immense trepidation when entering a new area.I simply cannot wait for the sequel.;)

Silent Hill 1, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 1-2, Condemned,
CyberMage: Darklight Awakening (their was this part where you had to manuever through this dark sewer area, and these creepy red eyed feral beasts would stalk you and their claws would click clack click clack as they got closer and closer...), System Shock, System Shock 2... these are the scariest games I think of. Cybermage is relatively unknown and not to many people have played it, it was a miserable failure commercially, but it had some intruiging original gameplay elements. Full open world to explore, raunchy subject matter, you could commander vehicles, such as jeeps, helicopters and tanks (EAT YOUR HEART OUT HALO!!) and this game surprisingly was released in 1996 and had a refreshing comic book style art thing going on for it. If you find cyber mage give it try, however it is extremely rare and not to many of them were ever produced. (You can't even buy it on Amazon!!)

A couple of the SH games, Condemed, and F.E.A.R. (the ending 'scare' sequencs got to me a little bit :o ;)). I didn't find the Resi-Evil games scary though (thought they were a bit arcade-y).

I played Res Evil when it was new, basically everyone that played that game nearly cripped their pants when those zombie dogs leapt through the window. It was an event so unheard of in a video game, and so startling that it to this day is one of the most memorable instances in a game, for many older game players.

I hate to say it, but the end of Act 1 in Gears of War (the first berserker) scared the crap out of me. :(

To be honest the scariest game I have ever played was "Barbie's Magical Dream Pony."
I have had to seek professional help ever since attempting to play through this twisted, evil frightening game. :(

ya know... I think my scare reflex is dead... I was watching the exorcist (the like remade one) on fuse for a little bit... I was actualy bored... but then again that is in comparison to my friend who thinks The Used's The Bird and the Worm music video is scarey...

Silent Hills. I like their post-industrial sound and monster design. My wife was a SH nurse this past Halloween.
Fatal Frame wrecks me up. No guns. FPS mode to fight the enemies (who come through the walls!) And the sounds. They make you strain to hear crackling voices on tape, just waiting for the explosive scream.
Sound is definitely a big factor for me.
I need to get back into Condemned and Call of Cthulhu.

Sounds like I need to play more horror games! I'm growing bored of horror movies... except for a good psychological thriller, but thats different. :)

the resident evil remake
it's just a great series when it's the first time you play a survival horror
cause you're walking around like a zombie yourself the first time you play
batteling the zombies, the controls and the lack of ammo asks alot of your nerves
after every play session i was a bit shaky
since that no game has gotten to me that bad
but i have to admit
Silent hill 2 /3 and fear spooked me alot too though mostly cause of something suddenly appearing but silent hill was just down right disturbing
:p good times, good times

I think i may have mentioned this in another thread a while back but the one game that scared the crap out of me the first time I tried was Half-life.
I wasn't familiar with such immersive types of games with hardware 3d engines and mouse and keyboard controls. It was new to me when I was 14 or 15.
The thing about it that scared me so much was that after the resonance cascade, where you're left alone in the test chamber, I had some kind of bug or something was wrong, and a vortigaunt would pop up inside the chamber and I had no weapon. The scary part was that it was unpredictable, I had no idea it was a bug at the time and thought it was supposed to be there and I was screwed. Scared the crap outta me at that age...

Me?
The only game that ever scared me much was probably System shock 2. Ambient Sounds FTW!

Oh yeah pigsy freaked me out beyond belief i was frozen stiff in the first corridor of the final level for about five minutes (but i got the bastard in the end)
too be honest i havent played that many scary games but F.E.A.R was ok i guess i just ruined it by constantly staying alert and saying to myself somethings going to happen, and when it did it significantly reduced my fear levels (although the last level made me want to curl up and cry)

Another disturbing game that comes to mind is KUON-a low budget survival horror, also the oringinal Project Zero had its share of unsettling moments. To be honest I didnt find System Shock 2 scary at all,I enjoyed it,but theres too much frustration involved in a lot of areas, such as gun durability and the clunky inventory.its still an awesome game though.;)

i remember a game from a while ago (the name escapes me, and it may have been talked about, i dont know) where all it was was you the player were in this sewer thing or tunnel and some monster was chasing you you constantly hear footsteps that get louder or softer, you have no weapons, and if the monster finds you your dead unless you have certain 1 use items (i think you may have been able to find a gun?) that would scare the monster away for a bit, i never completed it so i dont know the end, but it reallf scared the crap out of me when i played it
