Greetings fellows bioshock gamers. I also was plagued by the awful windows vista side by side configuration error. After two days of forum searching and contacting tech support, I finally got it to work.
I uninstalled my Visual C++ redistributable file from my programs and features option via control panel and reinstalled the service pack 1 version via:

Installed and bioshock worked the first time. Hope this helps some people, I feel your pain.
