View Full Version : How come you do not like CtP2? Or is it you just do not like change?

This is for people who want more units, more tech research, a future tech research as well, more building options, better Wonders of the World, movies for when they discover Wonders of the World, Espionage system, an unique trade system. These are some of the things people want in ciV. I am curious as to why, people do not like Call to Power 2 then, since it has everything you have asked for.
It has so many more options as well, way before cIV had them.
Yes it had a poor AI as well like ciV. The Apolyton patch has fixed this up a bit and made the game more challenging.
For people who wanted more, you already have this in CtP2, so how come you don't like it, when this is what you are asking for.
Is it because it didn't have the Civ name on it, or more likely with ciV, you do not like change? I am just curious as to what would really make people happy. If you didn't like CtP2, would you really like ciV if it has made these changes then?

I did love Call to Power 2!
I think they could easily sell a polished version of that game and I would pay for it.

I never played it, but almost every hardcore Civ fan I know loves CtP2. I'm tempted to buy a copy off eBay or something...

Wow this is weird. All I ever herd was people crap on the name. If anyone decides to get this game, please download the "Apolyton Patch" that fixes the game. Sadly Activision has abandoned the game. So the mod community fixed it. Mind you the graphics are "aged" since it's what a 10 year old game now.
At least with ciV we will hopefully not have an abonded game.
So does anyone not like CtP2 and still not like ciV? Why is that? I thought CtP2 had everything you wanted.

Call to power 2 was great, a lot of hardcore players who despise Civ V like Call to Power 2! i'm one of them! It's not changing the problem... The problem is when the change is ☺☺☺☺! I can change a chocolate icecream with a vanilla icecream, but i can't change it with a pepper icecream!:p
Dream of Civ V was a fusion between the best features of Call to Power 2 and Civ IV, with something new, as a better religion system...

I loved Call To Power 2, I purchased it when it came out, and like the possibilitites of building cities in space and under the sea. It's funny because I purchased this game when my first kid born 10 years ago and now my son is playing it.
Regarding the name, I recalled reading that Sid Meier treathen to sue the the maker because they release this title without his agreement, I think it was call Civilization: Call To Power II first but they decided to remove the "Civ" name to avoid the issue.
Great game, work well on my son MacBook Pro with bootcamp.

CtP2 is a great game, but it's got a terrible interface and becomes a mess of tedium.

When civilization call to power came out activison held the rights to the "civilization" by the time ctp2 came out it was held by someone else I presume firaxis

Is it also fully TBS/TurnBased System ???
That is a must for me. No RTS crap where You can pause or something stupid.
Full Turnbased System in combat with movement points that You can use to move or fight etc and Full TurnBased System in management. So many strategy games out there sacrifice this simply to appeal to a younger audience that cant sit still and is on a sugar rush. :D

You are probably right, but I remember an issue with Sid Meier not very happy about the release of this title, may be that why we never saw a ctp3 yet.

Change is normally good, but there is also something called "change for the worse", in Civ terms that means change where choice is diminished and AI stumbles incessantly trying to come to terms with them.
There was absolutely no reason to remove so many features and so much complexity in order to make it more accessible .. there are countless games/franchises (including Civ up to 4) that pride themselves on being easy to get into but hard to master (ie. accessible but complex).
Read the complaint threads are little more carefully and you'll see that very few of them criticise the changes but rather their implementation, their balance and what was taken out to "make room" for them.

Actually it was Activision who bought Microprose who at the time had the rights to Civilization. So when Activision made their game, it was Civilization: A call to Power. When CtP2 came out, they dropped the name Civilization and just called it Call to Power 2, since they lost the court case.

It is fully Turn Based. NO RTS crap at all. Remember the game is 10 years old, so the graphics may seem outdated. Still good though.

Activision abonded the game. Bascially at that time, if the name "Sid" wasn't on it, it wasn't worth getting. Just go on the Civfanatics forums and when in a Civ III or Civ IV forums you will see the tounge lashing CtP 2 got just because it wasn't a "Sid" game.
It's a great game. So if people can defend ciV because of shoddy AI, then CtP2 can be defended because of shoddy AI. The Apolyton patch fixes this. PM me if you need the link for it. I don't think we can post it here.

Might give it a shot then. :)
I see some reffer to CtP 2 as well. Is that also 10 years old or newer ???
Hope I can find some Old boxes in some offer-bin in some shop as I do like to have my games with boxes and all stuff. No Digital d/l's or cracks for me. :)
Oh if its 10 years old will it run on XP and/or Vista ???

What is abonded? You mean abandoned?
I have Call to Power 2, a variety of other things got in the way of me playing it much. I don't recall it being bad, but it wasn't spectacular.
Civ V isn't bad, it's just not great either. I don't enjoy playing a game and knowing that I have to work around the in-game bugs because the developer couldn't be bothered to give it the time it needed for testing.
I'm not talking about bugs related to performance issues either I'm talking about the silly crap, like unending cease fires, and the AI's ridiculous predilection for building it's cities so far from it's capitol, and other assorted junk like that.

Well, there has been alot of mods for Civ IV that make IV even more then CtP2. I am right now playing Rise of Mankind - A New Dawn mod for Civ IV which has alot of new stuff and I feel is better then CtP2. Infact I believe the authors of the mod plan to make one for Civ V once there has been a few patches made. Since Civ V is suppose to be more modable then Civ IV, I can't wait to see what they come up with. But to each their own. We will have to see how dedicated the developers are to making Civ V what it can be, and how well the modding community takes the challenge to add back in what people want. I just hope they don't lock down too many features which could limit what can be modded.

I may pick it up and give it a try if it goes on sale on Steam at some point.

OH I loved the tech tree you got in the game back then. A beautiful larges sized poster that was even better than Civ II. Shame I lost mine. :(.
@ Lord Funk, I had no problems playing it on XP, Vista or Windows 7. If you can find a box copy consider yourself lucky. I think you can get a digital download from some online site like GoG I believe.

Yes, you can get it from gog.com for a handful of spare change, and the gog version works with the apolyton patch.
Note that it's not only the looks that are dated, the entire interface feels a bit clumsy if you got used to modern games. But the game's well worth $6.

Did CtP2 have spending on tile improvements instead of workers? While I did like the ability to change any terrain into any other terrain with the appropriate tech, I still prefer workers.
Ocean and orbital cities were the tits though.

I still have this poster, in the original box, my boy love the game as well as Sim City 4.
For me, right now, I play Galactic Civilization II. Will see with Civ 5 in a few weeks, I did preorder it but I can not play several games at once, seems odd but I have a family life and work. These obligations are terrible for gamers...

Yes it was, I forgot about this feature until I showed the game to my son about 2 weeks ago, it is his first introduction to a Civilization game, he loves it.

Work great on 2 of my machine with Windows 2000 and XP, actually the requirements are windows 95 to 2000 I think. Do not know about Windows Vista or 7 (but if you have XP virtualiszation in Windows 7 it should be OK.
