I've been playing my last three games with the following setup:
If Culture, Treasury and Happiness all go into the Red, the game is surrendered by me: Anarchy. Game ends with my loss at that point.
Drop Barbarians and City States in Advanced Settings. Use Duel Board, Standard Pace, Industrial Era and play only one AI player.
Start at Prince Level for AI and increase AI Level if I win and decrease it if I lose after each game. Go to war with AI as soon as I meet it and never make peace.
I surrendered my first at King Level with Culture, Treasury and Happiness going Red. I won the 2nd at Prince Level but it was tight. I'm in the 3rd now at King Level and the AI actually broke through to attack my Capitol.
Since only ONE AI is playing against me, it is far stronger than when battling other AI's, City States or Barbarians.
In addition, multiplayer would become practical if patch allows:
1. Animations in Multiplayer.
2. Game time limit for each player.
3. Turn based moves, not simultaneous moves.
4. Proper saving and reloading of saved games.
5. Then just two human players would be involved, no AI at all.
If that was enabled in patches, Civ V would become more like chess with only human skill involved in the struggle.
