One thing seems striking - that the way the tech tree is structured in such a way that people can shoot up the historical eras in no time flat.

It's quite odd to be stuck some time in BC and hear that someone has entered the renaissance or some such, yet it seems to happen quite often in this version.

In previous Civ iterations there used to be an advantage to reaching an era first. Is there any similar bonus in this game?

Yes, you can activate the higher level Social Policies when you reach a particular era. Piety in the Classical, Patronage in the Medieval, etc...

It's lack of requirements that make it possible. Cause Infantry don't need Rifles ya know.

Also I've noticed that bonuses you get from city states increase considerably, especially when you enter renaissance. You also get a in-game pop-up notification that this is the case, it's really apparent with maritime city states. Even if you have a single maritime ally it's really gonna be worth your while to rush into renaissance.

On the flip side, it costs more to gain favor with city states as the ages progress. Not sure if influence decreases faster, but this might also be the case.
