View Full Version : Tech tree - does it actually offer any difficult decisions?

I really am in two minds about this tech tree.

On the one hand, I can see value in more simplicity. I am also aware that I probably do not yet appreciate the subtleties that may be there.

But on the other, in my first playthrough, I don't really see many choices on offer.

Ultimately, you pretty much have to get everything anyway to proceed - especially as you cannot trade techs.

Sure, you can decide to get x a bit before y, but overall - far as i can tell - you end up filling nearly all the gaps - leaving not very much strategic difference between one empire and another.

I spend far more time pondering over the culture civics, which really do offer a more meaningful set of choices.

Have people out there experienced differently? Is there any genuine strategic element to the tech tree any more?

I think the only real decision in my first playthrough was some culture tech vs the tech that gives you tanks (going for cultural victory and having been drawn into a war). And that one didn't really matter either.

Would be great if you had to choose which application of every technology you get, sort of like in MoO2. And then make techs tradeable. If those two were implemented, I could live with the linearity.

yes, even though its roughly 66% of the size of tech tree we had in Civ4 BTS. Add to the fact that there is virtually no dynamic nature to it whatsoever makes teching up a bit boring now.
