View Full Version : I like the game
Is it as good as Mafia 1? Not quite, but to be honest it's hard to follow perfection like that (my all time favorite game). Is it as immersive as Mafia 1? Again, not quite.
2k tried to make improvements, and in my opinion they dumbed it down a bit and that made the game worse than it could have been, in my opinion.
Pro's -
- Decent story, but could have been better.
- Fun to play (but could be better, see Cons)
Cons -
- Short. I got it late Tuesday night via Direct2Drive IGN website and by Wednesday night I had beaten it.
- 2k removed realism elements based on their beta feedback. This makes the game feel more like 50's-style GTA and less like Mafia. The cops no longer fine you for running red lights, and you can carry a gazillion guns at once. Both of these 'features' suck. The pedestrians no longer jump out of the way when you honk at them either, which leaves them blocking driveways, etc. all the time. Why did 2k remove such key elements that made Mafia: City of Lost Heaven what it was?
- I don't understand the Playboys. While naked chicks are great, I don't see any reason to add the magazines to the game. If you wanted to prolong the playing experience then there should have been a free ride mode instead.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
While I listed more cons than pros, overall, it's a good game and was worth the money IMO.
I've said it before and I'll state it again - In my opinion the perfect way to start Mafia 2 was to begin where the first left off - by making the player character one of the guys that killed Tommy. ****SPOILER ALERT*****
The way in which that was thrown into Mafia 2 seemed so out of the blue it was somewhat dumb - it had nothing to do with the main story and was just randomly thrown into the game. I don't care at all for the way it was incorporated into the game.

While i do agree with you on one or two points on Mafia 2. Such as the duration of the game for one instead of 15 chapters but maybe best at 20 chapters. I thought the graphic was excellent but there were also not so smart AI roaming around like zombies until you forced them into confrontation which i not too keen on doing at all. Vito and Joe made a hit duo throughout the entire campaign. Of course we all now know what happened to Joe. (Spoiler alert!!) i won't get into the detail.
I realize that there were something lacking that would put Mafia 2 more fun to play; here's the list of things
--use a baseball bat to whack a guy in the kneecaps/weapons (like a lead pipe, a 2x4 or even a frying pan to the face while he's been knocked down.
--a BRUTAL interragation methods to make him confess.
--burn down their houses, cars, and personal effects.
--there's a sense in the Untouchables movie that Al Capone uses a bat to bashed the guy's head on the round table. (remember? enthusiasm..) yea something like that would make such a more experience gameplay.
--like someone said before, let them do what the mob do best and applies that to the game. All illegal in the real world.
i like Mafia 2 game as much as the next gamer and i'm just throwing out ideas and see what others members thinks.
(maybe for future Mafia game...maybe?):)

I agree on the immersion not being as great as in Mafia 1. Like in Mafia 1 there was a real feel of being in a Mafia family, whereas in Mafia 2 it feels more like you're playing a hired thug.

You bring up another point that I forgot about. Henry and Joe are invincible during the missions!
I can't remember their names, but the buddies in Mafia 1 would die all the time causing me to replay the mission. In this one I can throw molotovs onto Joe and he never dies. He can stand out in the open and get shot 500 times and never die - on "hard" mode!
What the heck is that about??

the playboys are just collectibles, most games just throw in random crap to collect (AC: flags/feathers, GTA: "packages"/birds) my only complaint on the pron is alot of em dont even show anything or have those hideous tan lines.

I don't think Joe or Henry died once for me. Could just be my luck, I guess. In the last mission I specifically threw about 6 molotovs and some grenades onto Joe and nothing happened. And in the greaser mission they got shot a boat load of times and never died. So I figured they were invincible...

Imho fail. Mafia I isn't better than II. How could it be? It's an antic, it has 8 years, everything changed in mafia II to better.
Mafia I was magnificent in the old days, but how can we compare a game from 2002 and 2010? When technology of making games has changed dramatic.
Mafia I< Mafia II
The graphics are definately better than Mafia 1, as they should be considering how long ago the first one came out.
I can't say Mafia 2 is more realistic. Maybe the physics on the cars and clothes, yeah, but not in terms of how police act or how the guns are dealt with. In Mafia 1 if you had a shotgun or a rifle you had to walk around with it out in the open or drop it because realistically you can't shove a 4 foot long gun into the inside pocket of your small leather jacket.
Denby's response to these types of complaints is always "our testers thought it was more fun to hold 10k guns at once/run red lights with no ill effects/etc. etc. etc."
I don't know who they had test the game, but based on the overwhelming complaints on the forum about these types of things they certainly didn't have any die hard Mafia 1 fans test it... and if they did, they didn't listen to them.
I am complaining about certain aspects of the game, but I want to reiterate that I did enjoy it as is - I just think I would have enjoyed it even more with a few tweaks (I wanted to post something positive about it since there are a lot of complain threads... but looks like I turned my own thread into more of a complaint thread than a praising thread :( ).

Er, having better graphics and effects technology doesn't automatically make a game better than an older one. Even with older technology, the original still looks very good. Graphics technology isn't guaranteed to result in a believable world and characters, yet both Mafia games accomplish this better than their rivals in my opinion. Other than graphics and effects technology I don't see how the sequel out does the original, and indeed seems to be lacking in other game elements.

I agree with some of it.
To short and such.
Maybe the DLC will fix things,
or next Mafia will be longer.

What kind of stupid logic is that, Mafia 1s story is amazing, it has nothing to do comparing an old game to a new game.
It's like saying that any modern game looks better then Crysis because Crysis is 5 years old.
It's like saying the new MOH, Battlefield and CoD are better then the originals because their modern.

Hehe, I read your post Bob and thought 'bloody hell, Crysis is 5 years old? Where did the time go?!'. But I checked and it is just under 3 years old according to Wikipedia.
I agree completely with your argument though.
