Before the explosion of threads I thought I would start a discussion thread about the new Bioshock announced moments ago.
I will post the news we find below. Nothing redundant, I don't intend to post every single article out there as they are usually just about identical.
Syopsis:
BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter currently in development at Irrational Games, the studio behind the original BioShock (which sold over 4 million units worldwide). Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite introduces an entirely new narrative and gameplay experience that lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky.
Former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt has been sent to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned in Columbia since childhood. Booker develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.

So, is this Bioshock 3 or a spin-off? It sounds like a spin-off to me. Which sounds great to me. There's plenty of room for both Rapture and Columbia in my eyes.
EDIT: Go with the cnet article. I tried the 1up video and it wouldn't work for me.

the trailer looks amazing so many questions like how this new floating city ties in to rapture and the new robotic big daddy type characters makes me excited for the game now:p

I couldn't be more happy with Irrational's new project. I wonder if it has any ties at all to the first two Bioshock games. It is set in 1912 so before them. Its almost like their using the Bioshock name like Final Fantasy does has done with its games, whole new setting/characters a game with the name defining the type of experience which is too be played.

My guess: Reference to the sky. Maybe to the moral about going farther than you should.

I am hoping it takes place in an unified universe unlike the FF games. Though it would make sense of how Ryan got the idea and convinced other people to follow him to the ocean. After all, there already was a city in the clouds.

From the trailer to reading the synopsis, this game looks and sounds fantastic. I'm saddened it won't be out until 2012, but I know they had to rebuild everything. I've absolutely loved the first two and this can only make the series as a whole better.
Can't wait!

So Columbia was built before Rapture right? cause I'm a little confused here.
Even though I'm still a little confused I can still say that it looks like its going to be epic. I like the cyborgs but I'm gonna miss seeing big daddies with giant drills impale splicers. . . oh well I'll move on. I am gonna enjoy fighting the cyborgs though like the one from the trailer "Boom Heartshot" lol.

2012! 5 Years of development time? Wow this should be a really polished game then...
I think the move out of Rapture and into this enigmatic city in the sky will be a welcome change to the series! I guess the only person not excited about this must be Jordan Thomas. It's almost like they're saying "Hmm, we didn't quite like what you did in Bioshock 2, so we're scrapping the numbers and going in a completely different direction that's going to be bigger and better!"

I missed where they specifically said it was a prequel  To me all signs (aside from the title) seem to point to 'spiritual successor,' not something that is directly tied into the same cannon.

Ok dont hate me but this game would be an amazing multiplayer experience. I know I know it would take time away from the story but if it comes out 2012 that would be an entire 5 YEARS! Besides its not like it the end of the world. (Pun Intended)

At least we finally get the real sequel to Bioshock.
No offence to 2K Marin, but Bioshock 2 just wasn't Bioshock.
It's obvious that Rapture is not something that you can keep returning back to. Had this concept years ago, a city in the sky. Can't say it's really orginal, but regardless, Ken Levine is working on this game, and it's Irrational. What game have they ever made that has sucked? ;) ;)
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but if you have a look at this link:

I am intrigued too, however in 1912 Andrei Rianofski would still have been in Russia....
I'd be over the moon if they released footage from this 10 minute demo that all the websites seem to talk about. I know the CGI trailer looks incredible, but a look at some actual gameplay would be great.

The question still remains.... What is icarus, or does it have nothing to do with the game at all.
Icarus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus) is an ancient Greek mythological figure who attempted to fly into the sun (and died)
I think Icarus is simply a symbol, capturing the essence of this game - Bioshock in the skies.

I'm a bit meh about this one..
I mean.. I LOVE BioShock 1 and 2..
But this game seems to be nothing to have in common with the series..
It's like.. ''Oh yeah! there's also this city in the sky!''.
And that the name holds the word BioShock in it.. meh..
I know I sound negative, this could be a very good game, which I actually KNOW just because Ken Levine and Irrational Games are working on it..
But I find this a bit of a ridiculous twist if it HAS anything to to with BioShock.
Maybe I just have to see more of this game..
*puts on flame-shield* (sorry guys:()
Edit: If it is TRUE that they're just re-using the name (which I still find lame..) and it's COMPLETELY new and not connected to BioShock at all.. it could work out really good.

Definitely. I was a little apprehensive when seeing that the possible "BioShock 3" would be set in the sky...but it does seem like a spin off. As long as Rapture's story isn't done, I would love to have two different BioShock titles to keep me occupied!...I just love Rapture too much to say goodbye, plus I'm still left with questions when it comes to Rapture lol. Could still be in the same Universe but have no connection to Rapture, right? Levine has not explicitly said either way has he?... it seems as if he's avoiding answering that question, which would lead me to believe it's in the same Universe but won't be in anyway connected to Ryan's adventure.

Well... I'd bet good money that this is just a spin-off. If I'm right, I'm a happy camper. I still have my doubts, thought. Check the BioShock Off-Topic section.
Also, it's impossible that Ryan claimed Columbia as his own after it maybe fell into the ocean.
HERE IS WHY:
-Columbia windows are NOT strong enough to handle the bottom of the ocean
-Check out the exhibits in Ryan Amusements, depicting Ryan BUILDING Rapture.
-Ryan created a fake company, Warden Yarn, that he used to buy the material to build Rapture with.
-Columbia's archetecture is completely different that Rapture's.
-The list goes on.

I'm really looking forward to this. From the screens, kind of reminds me of the steam-punk genre for some reason which I've always loved. As for the name, Bioshock just means a biological shock, and it seems as though the protagonist will be able to use some type of plasmids, so it still fits. :p

I think that people mean a creepy-scary vibe. I guess the robots could be 'scary'. Maybe there will be some mutated virus outbreak. Or like you said, weather. Hurricane maybe?
I think it might go H.P Lovecraft and end up in involvement with a cult.

It doesn't HAVE to be scary. As long as the story is well written and the game play is fresh, but still built on a their solid foundation, it'll be a blast to play.

Madea new thread about it, before i saw this thread! I will take it away. I was stunned when i read about it. It has to do with Bioshock somehow because the name. Maybe Andrew Ryan builted a City in the sky so you can go there from Rapture like in a nother dimension or something. They managed to invent plasmids and ADAM, maybe good old Ryan invented a way to build a city in the sky as well? I hope this game will be good! /Johan
No, Columbia was built as a travelling World's Fair, and it has American flags ALL OVER IT. Ryan has NOTHING to do with Columbia. When Columbia was still afloat, Ryan (or, at the time, Rianofski) was still in Russia.

The trailer LOOKS like Bioshock, and HAS that feel we've come to expect in a Bioshock game. They're probably more than likely NOT gonna abandon Rapture. and for all we know this story may tie in to BS 1 and 2. Who knows? none of us know. so we shouldn't complain of what we don't know. So what if it's set in the sky? We all know it's a prequel already. I anticipate Bioshock 3 to tie in to the events that happen in Infinite as well as the first two games. But that's just me. We'll all play it, and we'll all love it. It's Irrational Games for pete's sake

We get a taste of this as DeWitt strolls by an almost catatonic man dragging a newspaper cart with a missing wheel.
a woman sweeps the porch of a flame-engulfed grocery store, seemingly oblivious to the blinding blaze nipping at her backside; black crows compete with flies to feast on a horse carcass; and, taking the prize for most disturbing scene in Columbia, a crazed politician preaches to absolutely no one in a town square.
Surrounded by barrels of guns, this Uncle Sam-looking madman encourages us to take up arms against foreigners right before he flashes in and out of some strange blink-and-you’ll-miss-it transformation, identifies DeWitt as an enemy, brandishes a hook, and uses said hand claw to flee via Columbia’s zip line-like rail system.
Psychos. Something is going on in Columbia.

Sorry guys, but I am loving this thing. The trailer feels Bioshock, the odd mix of "beautiful" and "dangerous" along with "calm" and "terrifying" is already peeking my interest... And the possibility that the two "prongs" of the Bioshock universe could collide into something in the future to create an "Awesomeshock" game and essentially divide by zero?
Yeah, I'm a bioshock fan girl, so sue me, but if Rapture failed and Columbia fell... well, think of the possibilities for future commingling of the plot lines. I think that "Bioshock" is to do with the abilities that are presented, not with the cities, but if the mythos can be expanded to two (or more) cities that then "exist" within the same universe I say bring it on.

My first gut reaction was "no no no!" because I fell in love with Rapture so hard, but considering there's very little possibly that Infinite will ignore Rapture, and the story is likely to have ties and further develop the BioShock universe, I'm just going to wait for more information and insight. Also, gut reaction is underpinned by the fear they won't return to the Rapture story. We'll have to see.

Here's an explanation about BioShock Infinite from Ken Levine:
http://irrationalgames.com/insider/announcement-from-ken-levine/
He calls it a sequel, but if you really pay attention to what he's saying it's really just, as I thought, a spiritual successor. It's taking the ideas that are core to BioShock and bringing them to a new setting and a whole new universe.
I like what I'm seeing so far with the game, but I'm a little annoyed with Levine right now. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but it seemed to me that Levine was saying, "well, the guys at Marin were a bunch of misguided idiots by going back to Rapture, so we're going to make a proper sequel to BioShock." To me it seems like the inclusion of BioShock in the title is a decision influenced by arrogance, more than by creativity.

I have to agree with that sentiment. When I read Ken's message, I almost get the feeling that he's saying 2K Marin didn't do a very good job, and we're going to make a real sequel. The way you say that it seems as if Levine and Co didn't start work on Infinite until after they saw BS2. Surely that is not the case. 2K wanted them to go back to Rapture, Irrational did not, so they gave Rapture duties to 2k. It didn't piss me off, but it did provide insight into why Levine left 2K and re-started Irrational.
The big wigs at 2K were so impressed with the Blockbuster status of Bioshock that they probably pressured Levine and his design team to continue the formula. Levine probably said that the story of Rapture had been told and he wanted to go to a new location. They didn't agree and they both civilly agreed to divide and conquer. 2K Marin handled BS2 while Ken quietly developed the story for Infinite. It makes you wonder how much the 2K crew knew about this. Afterall it has been going on for three years already. 5 year production time...that's pretty long. This game must be huge.

To be clear, I'm loving the idea of the game so far. I think it looks brilliant and I'm really excited. I think that Irrational will likely have another landmark game on their hands. The only thing I take issue with is the arrogance that seemingly went into the decision to call it 'BioShock.'
This is a spiritual successor so they could have, and probably should have called it something else, however the statement Ken Levine made gives the impression that they're calling it BioShock because they feel they're giving the game the followup it deserves, essentially calling BioShock 2 a failure.

I mean, the trailer did not even have the main character utulizing usage of any ''plasmid'' while in both Bioshock 1 trailers,we saw Jack use 2 plasmids(Insect Swarm in one trailer, and Winter Blast in the other trailer). :(

I dunno...I'm not getting that Levine was calling Bioshock 2 anything. I read more into it that he had a totally different creative idea than 2K Marin had and decided to branch off and go with his creative instincts. The quote where Ken states that he thought they had told Rapture's story by the end of BS1 tells me that he didn't feel it was ever necessary to return to Rapture, despite how well made Bioshock 2 was.
I think that you just have two different creative thought processes: 2K Marin and Ken Levine. 2K listend to the "polls" and thought Rapture should be continued, but Ken thought Bioshock was the story all along and not Rapture.
It's fascinating...and frankly as fans we are getting best of both worlds now. How can anyone be upset by that?

I don't think you should get flamed for your valid opinion. I know what you are saying. I am not sure what the Bio part of Bioshock means, but I always attributed that to the reworking of the DNA through biological material like Adam. Therefore, it's possible that this sky city may have some biological reworking or at least manipulation. Something made that woman hover a cloud of roses to catch that guy. Something made that mechanical brute thing with a pumping heart in a fishbowl work. Maybe that's the bio part of it. I dunno.
I didn't attribute Bio as anything specific to do with the ocean. That's just the Rapture part for me. But maybe it's a matter of finding out more about this game that will satisfy you. I'm actually a little more irked by the "Infinite" part. I get that they mean the sky is infinite and Columbia is a big place...but it just seems a little awkward.

If you’re going to make it in a completely different setting why not just make it its own game instead of trying to piggyback on the original bioshock?
Obviously I don't know enough about the game at this point to make solid judgments and this might change when more info is released but to me it looks like they’re just trying to leech of the bioshock fandom.

I'm convinced that Bioshock 3 (by this I mean a return to Rapture) would make the series like Jurassic Park: first one was epicly awesome, second one wasn't as good (although Bioshock 2 was much better than JP2 when comparing them to their predecessors), and the third instalment will be top-notch.

From the way he put it, he pretty much said Bioshock: Infinite is the true sequel to Bioshock. I mean infinite looks like a great game but what he said was uncalled for and completely unnecessary. Nowhere does he even recognize Bioshock 2 exists except in this derogatory excerpt.
It would have been easier for us to go back to the well. We could have taken the easy route. We could have simply done more of the same, but we would not have been true to ourselves as game developers. Making the original BioShock was hard. We challenged ourselves every step of the way, and we tossed aside many elements and ideas simply because they weren’t good enough.
That's pretty poor...

It makes you wonder how much the 2K crew knew about this. Afterall it has been going on for three years already. 5 year production time...that's pretty long. This game must be huge.
I wonder if Elizabeth Tobey will be contracted out for "Somethinginthesky.com." :DLOL! When I heard about BioShock Infinite taking place in the sky I immediately typed "somethinginthesky" into my address bar. Sadly nothing to do with BioShock.:(

I have to admit that was a little snippy of a comment. As a fan of BS2 and BS1 equally, I wonder what was going through his mind when he wrote that. Bad for, Mr. Levine.

Wha? JP Fans thought the third was the worst...
TAK
This is a spiritual successor so they could have, and probably should have called it something else, however the statement Ken Levine made gives the impression that they're calling it BioShock because they feel they're giving the game the followup it deserves, essentially calling BioShock 2 a failure.
Maybe it's not a spiritual successor (was it mentioned in an interview)? Maybe Levine (who created BioShock) is taking it where he originally intended? Perhaps we should just wait and hear... it's too early to make assumptions.
I think whenever we think of BioShock we associate with Rapture and the ocean. Maybe to Levine it was something more.

What? I don't see the big deal, I love that it's still "BioShock" in a wierd way. I like what Ken was getting at, that BioShock would be more then Rapture, a craptastic underwater utopia, with Andrew Ryan, Lamb, Big Daddies and Little Sisters.
I could stay with that formula forever. But I'm not going to turn away from something that looks just as interesting and amazing, even if it's not the same universe.

It would've made a lot more sense to name it under a brand new IP, perhaps a new "shock" title. That said, I don't think including "Bioshock" in the title is out of revenge. A new name would've been appropriate but including "Bioshock" in the title improves and builds the entire brand. It's more of a marketing strategy than anything else.

I can see that, Ureh, but by denying the work that Marin did on BS2, even if it wasn't Levine's preferred vision, and essentially saying that "because I thought it sucked I'm going to create my own sequel..." I dunno. It seems a little unfair to me. I'm personally putting the comment from my mind and relying on the "BS:I's story takes place 30 years before Rapture even gets built" line for now. I feel it was a little unfair of him to just snub Marin's work, even if it wasn't where he wanted the series to go.

First off, i dont know if this is still being discussed, but there's no way Columbia fell from the sky and later became rapture. The buildings of rapture are art deco inspired. These buildings are from a time before art deco came around. (Art deco originated in the twenties) Secondly, the trailer shows that Columbia was built over farmland, not the ocean. Unless it just magically floats over to the ocean and decides to plop itself down on the bottom of the sea, i highly doubt this is rapture. And guys, this game takes place in America. Which is not even close to where rapture is positioned.
As for a connection between bioshock and bioshock infinite, I believe there has to be one, otherwise it would be named something completely different, right? Like x-com was.
The only guess i have is that there is a connection between this game and Ryan. I dont know what it would be though, considering ryan didnt even leave russia until 1919. Maybe he learned later about it? got inspired and thought he'd give it a go? I dont know. but i have a feeling that we wont know until we've all played this game. Something tells me theyve got something big planned for this game. Not to mention the graphics look awesome :)
Anyways, though its not exactly the prequel i had anticipated (really this caught me off guard, i yelled for about 10 minutes because it wasnt in rapture) i cant be 100% angry that this game isnt the same ol' game we're all used to and love. I give them credit for giving something new a go. I'll play Bioshock Infinite...

Well, if it makes you feel any better....Columbia disappears after it is being accused of travelling the globe like a giant democracy wielding weapon. It ascends into the clouds to never be heard from again for years...
...but very much like Rapture, there are a few escapees who know where Columbia is and harbor our protagonist, Booker Dewitt, to investigate and rescue Princess Peach (I mean Elizabeth) from the castle in the sky. But when Dewitt gets there he's realized that Columbia has turned into some sort of nightmarish city (a lot like Rapture) and things have gone horribly wrong.

Well said! I am very excited by this. I think the Irrational team has some very interesting things to say. Rapture will always be my true love, but I think Columbia has already earned a lot of endearment from me. It's like they are using the Bioshock name to create a new IP. Actually this reminds me of Silent Hill 4: The Room a game which had no connection to the previous entries and could have been a totally new series.

it feels like Bioshock, it just doesn't feel like Rapture
That's GOOD, 'cuz as much as I love Rapture, it was a cul-de-sac. And gamers were already b!¬˘hing about "itmuzta fludded by now, mannnnnn" ::long toke:: .
Even being ABLE to break out Bioshockian elements into a whole new environment is a very hopeful development.
plus i dont see the horror factor in this game
the signs of a dystopian society? Columbia's a dystopia? what?
Yeah, cuz a two minute trailer showed you SO much. :p What, a dystopia can't be sunny?

Yeah, I'm not sure which fate is worse:

2. Getting vivisected, then having select parts of your body glued to a robotic suit. And who knows what else?!

No offense sir, but they are the game makers, and they, are the dreamer of dreams. If you don't like how they do it, go out and make your own successful game studio! Show em how it's done instead of telling them how to handle something THEY created.
No offense, sir, but you sound like a completely blind supporter and cannot handle when there is very blatantly something very wrong with how a successful corporation handles things O:
For a perfect, though unrelated, example: Microsoft.
So I can chalk Irrational Games up with this~
And, was said a few pages back, if they really WERE creative, they would've found a way to make Rapture work. But they didn't. They just took the name of "Bioshock" for some REALLY easy marketing.

No offense sir,but although they did create Bioshock,I think they NEED to be shown how it's done with this new quote ''Bioshock'' unquote Infinite
agreed Rapture =/= Bioshock. Rapture = a futuristic secret city where a bioshock ocurred
I disagree. A city in the sky does not a Bioshock make. Bioshock is Rapture,Rapture is Bioshock. I will say it again,Bioshock is a body, and RAPTURE(NOT ''Columbia'',or anything else for that matter) is the HEART. Without the heart, you cannot have the body.
With that,I am still awaiting the flames from the XCOM people for all my posts on the XCOM forum :p

I for one am excited to see Rapture out of the light for a while. If they do bring it back, it will be all the more rewarding.
Rapture is NOT Bioshock. Bioshock is NOT Rapture.
Bioshock is just a name. The game could have been called Rapture and been better off from it. Bioshock is (to me) more of a series, or feeling, or concept. Yes, Rapture is beautiful, and I love it. But I have a hard time envisioning myself being awestruck by Rapture ever again. To me, now, it's more like my alma mater, where if I ever do get the chance to go back, I will be filled with nostalgia, and if I don't get the chance, I'll always have the memories.
This game feels like having a new girlfriend. While I'll miss what was, and wonder if my new experiences could ever match the old, but my excitement makes me see everything in a bright new curiosity... Butterflies are accumulating.
Levine's story was done in Rapture apparently. He wasn't telling the story of Rapture specifically, but the story of its meaning. There is a ton of lore that can be shaped from Rapture, and I'm sure it will be in some form, but this universe can be equally as engrossing and captivating. There is always room for something amazing.

"BIOSHOCK: by-OH-shawk: n to experience societal upheaval when biotech revolution occurs."
Then the concept can be used in many different settings. Totally valid and MUCH more flexible. (And now I can pitch my space station idea again.)(Shut up.)

Perhaps she may be the only one that is able to use it. In the article posted earlier on in the thread, it said Elizabeth (The girl) would use her elemental powers to assist you, but would physically drain her. This tells me that it's not very likely the player himself will be able to use these powers. Time will tell.

Why call it BioShock, then? What not call it something else? Is that marketing? Is that artistic option?
I think it's both because I think BioShock is a lot more than just Rapture. This is a game; it's a first-person shooter set in an amazing place with a story wrought with – from our perspective – ideas that are tied with history. And everything else really is up for grabs. But we felt that if we made this game and it wasn't a BioShock game, that would be a bit of a cheat. To say, "Oh, it's a totally new thing." But it is a new thing, but it's also a continuation of the things we've done before.
