Preloading Steam

Hey Officials,

can you give any information on how big roughly the download of the Steam Digital Deluxe Edition is and how many days in advance we will be able to preload it? I am sitting on a slow connection and would like to play Civ5 on release day.

Hmm... some of this has already been asked and there is no official word, so I'll chime in with some fairly reliable information for what we do know.

At the moment we can only guess, since Firaxis isn't saying and probably couldn't guess with much more than 80-90% accuracy. You can probably expect it to need at least 4GB. I may be as high as 8GB, but that seems a bit huge for a Civ game.

This is sort of up to Valve and seems to be dictated by expected server load and other release dates. Usually, the pre-loads start a week (give or take a day) before the release date. Civ5 seems to be getting pretty high profile advertising on Steam, so if you pre-purchase and leave the client running, I'd expect we'll see an ad/notice about Civ5 preloading starting up.
