While we could come up with a story set in the modern day, I'm personally partial to historical settings when it comes to story-driven games. It allows us to re-create a time period and a world that no longer exists. The artists really get into it because to them, it's new. When you're creating a realistic modern day setting, it's just not quite as much fun.I could not agree more, if you did go for a Mafia III, I think the 70s would be a good era with biker gangs and some heavy rock, just please stay away from the 80s, I had trouble staying awake through it

Jack or dan one of the two said that next wk he would compile all the recently asked questions together and answer all of them
well since it's techically not next week i have a few more questions id like to ask along with the original questions of mine that never received an answer.
1. Will the FBI get involved and try to takedown vito once he gains enough stars?
2. Will the police chase after vito if he goes into a building?
3. Will the gangs spawn in their turfs, and will most if not all members be carrying guns?
4. How do the random encounters work in mafia2?
5. Is their really no countryside?
6. Since the game is finished, how many sidemissions/optional activities are there?
7. Whats the dealio on TV, can we watch it?
8. Will whichever family vito is currently working for or apart of, help him out if gets into trouble with a rival family or the police?
9. Is it possible to kill somebody in the game with a well placed bullet from a pistol?
10. How many outfits of vitos come equiped without hats?
Hopefully you'll have time to answer these and everyone elses questions, thanks.

Why no tv.
Ya said ya would bring things that would played a big role in the 50's into mafia 2.
The tv was a big thing. It changed the U.S.A.
They even said the 50's was the birth of rock nroll,tv,etc.
Plus the tv could have been used for the news.
I know that ya needed money for the radio. But the tv was bigger in the 50's then the radio. The radio was not needed because people had tv's
The Tv should have stayed. Just for a minor role. For news. The radio should have been used for music.

Yes. I get these reviews before you guys do. I cannot talk about them until they hit newsstands or the net, and I don't want to talk about them until they're all in.
All I'll say right now is that people from different cultures and different countries perceive things differently, and each review you read is the opinion of one person. I advise you to play the demo and judge for yourself.
So we should assume (since you already read some of the reviews) that we'll see a score higher than a 8?
I know it's early, but when a game is being developed for such a long time, and get a score of 7/10, and have the reviewer basically "spit" on the game, to me is a disgrace.
You worked your ass off, having your life revolve mafia 2, 24/7.
I would like to see these reviewers make a game. ;)

50% of all these questions are trivial guys....You are missing the point of the game...FBI,houses,TV all that is irrelevant....The story, character development, the soul of that era is what matters and what Jack and his associates tried to capture and present in the best light possible....

but the minor details help with all that, being able to fill up your car with petrol, having the snow slide off the top of the cars when making a sharp turn, having options about what to do when cops try to arrest you.
All the little things help bring the game and more importantly the city to life.

I mean come on, they've focused on tiny little details that no one really gives a flying **** about. Filling up my car with petrol? great that adds to the realism. Oh the weather never ****ing changes and I can drive around in free roam for sixteen years and the time never changes? Yeah. That adds to the realism.

I still stand by that. The small details help bring the city to life but I do feel 2k have concentrated on the small details so much they've forgotten the bigger ones.
And unless it changes at the end of the game or with DLC I will always hold the lack of dynamic weather change against 2k and this game.
The game was always going to have flaws.

But you keep on about this when it's already been shown it's a resource issue, how much they could cram onto a DVD disk, I would have liked to have seen tv in the game also, but given the choice one or other, I'd certainly choose the radio.

It ends in the mid-50's. But to us, 50's was 50's when it came to things like music and some of the art and cars we drew inspiration from. We didn't really know what year we were going to end the game in until recently when we did the math. You'll see what I mean when you play it.

You are correct sir. TV didn't not take over the world overnight. Radio was the dominant form of entertainment back when our game takes place. Remember when plasma screens came out? Think about how expensive they were and how many people you knew had them. And if they did, there was like 1 or 2 HD channels available. That's what regular TV was like back in ancient times.

Not throughout, but you might hear a doo-☺☺☺ song or two once you get into the 1950s. We don't have a dedicated doo-☺☺☺ station. It'll play on ECNR, which is the rock station of the 50's.

Jack, is the game good?
Just kidding. I wanted to know a few things.
1) Is it true that you can't shoot while you're driving?
2) Is the game heavy on PC? I know the requirements are out, but often they aren't much useful... if you can't answer it isn't a problem, though. :)

Whoa.... I'll answer this one in parts, and some I'm going to ask 2K Dan to answer. Here's the first one:
5/What is the thing that you enjoy most doing in the game?
It may sound silly with all the emphasis we placed on the shooting, story, etc... but my personal favorite thing to do in the game is to get one of the awesome convertibles in the 1950's, customize it, and drive around the city and listen to the music. It's especially cool at night.

Where did you get ideas for the fictional names of cars/guns. Do you have a guy who just comes up with clever names all day? I could do that! :D
Most things were already named when I started on the project. I honestly don't know who came up with the names of the cars and the weapons. I think it was the producers who did most of that. We can ask Dan, or Denby when he comes back on.

I have a question for Jack, Question: Will most buildings be able to be torn apart sort of like the building in a trailer i have seen where there's a bunch of your friends shooting up a resterant or something, will most buildings be similar to this? where support beams fall wood snaps and things like that? As far as broken glass and broken props, i know about those, but i just wanted to know about any buildings being able to fall apart like the one showed in the PhysX Trailer
Thanks~!

I just looked that up because I thought only Frank and Sam were played by people from The Sopranos, but it turns out there were like six people who had an overlap in both the game and the series. That's nuts.
For my question:
Jack, I know it was said in the past that the side missions (which have since been integrated into the main story) would focus more specifically on the lives of the supporting cast. What I was wondering is does the supporting cast only include the bigger players like Scarpa, Barbaro, Tomasino, etc. or will cast members like Giuseppe, Coyne, Harry, etc. also be expanded upon in the integrated side stories?
Also, and I apologize if this has already been asked but this thread has boomed so fast that I haven't had time to read through all of it, but will we have several objectives to choose from at once during a Chapter in the game (where we may have several various waypoints active at once) or will we be forced to complete each objective one at a time? For example, let's say Vito will be required to collect a certain car and collect a package in one Chapter. Do we get a choice of which of those two objectives we would want to complete first or are we forced to do one and then the other?

This is an interesting story that I don't think I've shared here.
It wasn't easy. We get most of our voice talent from the talent agencies in LA and NY. I went through hundreds and hundreds of auditions.
Vito had to sound tough, but not too tough, and he had to be noticeably different from Henry and any other character he frequently interacted with. For example, when they're in the car together, all you really see is the car as you drive through the city, so it's very important that there is a lot of separation between the voices.
We originally had Rick Pasqualone cast as Henry. We were really happy with him in that role, and we were searching for a Vito. The main character is usually the hardest to cast for, and this was no exception.
We still hadn't found anyone when it came time to record the dialog for the major cutscenes, so we asked Rick to play both Henry and Vito, with the understanding that we'd go back and re-do the Vito lines once we found the right actor. Rick is really versatile, and he turned in great performances for both characters. That's when we started thinking about keeping Rick as Vito.
During that first week of recording, we had early versions of the cutscenes at the studio so the actors could get a better feel for each scene. When Rick saw what Henry looked like, he told me how much his friend and fellow actor Sonny Marinelli looked like him. I said "Well, bring him in."
Some of my Czech friends were with me that week, and when Sonny first came in, one of the guys who wasn't very comfortable speaking English grabbed me and said "Is Henry!!!" He was a perfect fit. If we were making a movie, this is the guy we would cast as Henry. The icing on the cake was that this is Sonny's first videogame. I really enjoy hearing new voices in games.
So that's how Rick ended up playing Vito and Sonny ended up as Henry.
There aren't many actors who could have played Joe, and I'm really happy that Bobby Costanzo agreed to do it. He was far and away the best choice. After they saw the script, even some of the actors who were unaware that Bobby was already cast in the role recommended him.
Eddie is played by Joe Hanna. This was another case where as soon as I heard his voice, I knew we had our guy. Unlike many of the other actors, he grew up in Nebraska. For those unfamiliar with the US, this is where we grow all the corn. I'm sure there's more than corn there and it's a great place to live, but when I drove through it, all I saw was cornfields. So let's just say that the regional accent is very, very different :) But... Joe's stepfather was from the northeast, so he was more than familiar with the accent and the attitude. Plus he had lived and worked in NY for a while.
I can share more info on the actors if there is interest. Probably best to wait until the game comes out and you get a chance to meet all the characters. Note that this is only for the English version of the game. Our localization teams handled the casting for the other languages.

It was more in reference to the mafia 2 features thread where people were complaining about removed features...making comments like "what were they thinking" and "were they high when they made these decisions?".

That story is very interesting,I was going to ask something like that:)
Whow!I cant believe you are really Jack and you are answering our questions!
Thanks for everything!
Im from Argentina,my Grandparents are for Naples and Sardegna, and I love a good Mafia history(Scorsese is my favourite director).
I am pretty sure I will love this game!
Can I make you a few questions?:D
1/How does the game Saves and Loads?
2/Can you buy houses/departments?
3/Is the game going to have more than one difficulty level?
4/Can you put guns in the trunk of your car?
5/What is the thing that you enjoy most doing in the game?
I must say that I never saw a game better looking than Mafia 2,Seriously,just amazing, the city looks like a real one!And the snow!Cars!Buildings!Street! The textures!Clothes! The fluid movements!Characters design!Reflects!Pretty much everything looks amazing!I remember that when I saw one image with Joe and two girls I tough that it was a gangsters movie videogame, and that it was a movie image!(I knew nothing about Mafia1 or 2 then:))
6/Wich part of all the visual efects you like more?I love the phisics!
7/Wich weapon do you like more?
8/How many weapons are in the game?(aproximately)
9/How will the citizens react to your actions?I supose that if you pull out your gun, they will run,but if you punch somebody?
10/Are there more than one end depending on decisions you choose on the history?
Thats all, sorry for the large list and for my REALLY BAD English!:)
Thanks for everything and sorry if you already answered some cuestions!
:)
Oh!I have to add an 11 question
11/Dont you think that it would be great to make something like a"making of"Mafia 2 in the future?I think it would be REALLY interesting.

Wooow! I was always wondering about that.. Big Thanks Jack! But i rad that Rick is a actor and not a voice actor. Was it his first time with Mafia II and Vito? Btw. I love Vito's Voice , Henry's Voice and Joe's Voice.. They fit perfectly! And another question : Are the voice actors of them professional or just beginners?
Rick does a lot of on-camera work, and he does a lot of voiceover. I put him up there with Nolan North as far as versatility goes. When I need someone who can play several very unique characters, those are the two guys I call before anyone else.
Sonny does mostly movies and TV. This was his first voiceover job. I'll be he gets asked to do more voiceover work after Mafia II is released. he's a professional actor, but he's the "beginner" of the group as far as voice acting goes. You certainly can't tell by his performance though.
Bobby does movies, TV, animation, games, etc. Anyone remember the FMV game Sewer Shark? He was in that. Total Recall, Die Hard 2, Batman the animated series... the list goes on and on.

1.Ya removed the gym right.
2.Ya made empire bay alittle smaller by taking out the country side.
4.Ya changed Vito alittle.
5.Ya removed the multiple endings.
6.Are you able to buy more then one safehouse? Because wikipedia says you can.(I dont know if wikipedia is good source.)
7.How is the eating food phys.
How do you feel about all this?
1. No. There never was a gym. Vito will visit a gym once during the game, but I'm not going to tell you how, why, when, or where.
2. No. There never was a countryside. There are suburbs.
3. You removed question #3, right?
4. We actually changed Vito a lot over the course of development.
5. Yes. We decided to go with the ending we all liked best.
6. There are no safehouses. Ignore everything you read on Wikipedia. The information presented there has never been accurate.

The whiners are the reason we don't interact with the forum members more. Games are one of those things that are enjoyed by so many people, and we think that's great, but it also means that you have millions of gamers out there who all think they understand how games are made, and surely we must be idiots if we make a decision that they disagree with.

my personal favorite thing to do in the game is to get one of the awesome convertibles in the 1950's, customize it, and drive around the city and listen to the music. It's especially cool at night.

They were never in the game. That video must have been showing a test bed for a work-in-progress melee weapon combat system. I have no idea where it came from or how it got onto the net. The general rule to follow is that if you haven't seen it in any of the official trailers or gameplay videos, it's not in the game.

When developing these characters, were you maybe trying to go for a more REALISTIC approach? So make them feel like real characters you would actually MEET in the mafia, rather than some character you might meet in gta iv or saints row (who's very comedic, and very unrealistic)?

In sweden, gamereactor mentioned how they thought Mafia 2 was a masterpiece.
2K Czech was clear about its ambitions from the start. They wanted to create the most cinematic action game ever. I think they have actually succeeded! Mafia II is like a gangster epic and rolled, and stuffed with sharp knife between designed sequences and an unpredictable and very well written story about friendship, loyalty and crime.

hell now that others are mentioning it i think i might as well ask...
since the official estimate of Mafia II is 15 hours. do you happen to recall what the official estimate was on the original Mafia?
because if it was around 15 that would give people a lot better estimate as to what they can expect the game's length to be simply because people complete games at different speeds and that would give out much more valuable info on 'game length' vs the usual 'such and such hours'.

so in other words... Mafia II and Mafia should be roughly the same length.
so 'IF' that's true then that will give us fans of the first game a idea of what to expect in which for me i think i had quite a few hours into the first game as i did not rush through it and did all the Lucas missions as the extra cars you got where worth the time to do those side missions.

ha! u iz so funny.
So removing the ability to shoot from a car and removing ALL melee weapons is logical to you but removing the cover system is just stupid?
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they removed the guns and cars as well. W.T.F are they trying to do to this game?

When did having melee weapons begin to be a deal breaker?

why is it a "joke"?
I want confirmation on a rumour I know is probably B.S but the only way to be 100% certain is to hear it from the horses mouth.
I'm not judging the game and I won't until I've played the full thing. But you go on what you know so far.
@mcgee did I say it was a deal breaker? No I clearly stated I'd still be buying the game. And the melee weapons were part of the atmosphere. Walking up to that gang in mafia 1 with a baseball bat in your hand and paulie standing next to you with a bat slung over his shoulder created a very tense atmosphere. Every little detail helps create the atmosphere, you can have the weather be whatever you like but without every little detail being right the atmosphere won't be as good as it could be.
What about when strolling home with the girl in mafia 1 and the guys approach you. Three or four of them, with barefists you know you wouldn't stand a chance but with a set of dusters wrapped 'round your fist it evens it out a little and you know it. It gets you hyped up, it sets the atmosphere.

1.How did you real about the game realism.Did the game like make you real alive.
2.Was the 40's like depressing.
3.Was Joe funny as hell more funny then Roman from gta 4 or or was he more reclkess like Lance Vance from vice city.
4.I should not be asking to much into the game but when Vito becomes made man. Him and Joe are begining to get kind of richer. How does Vito see all of this. How does him becoming a mademan effect him,the gamer, and te storyline?
5.What was your favourite clothing in the game?
6.I heard you can sit down on any funiture in your apartment to restore stamina.
7.How were the facial animation?
8.In the 50's we will not only see new things but new personalities. Kids will be rebaling. So this may be the birth of a new gang called the Greasers.
Is this ture?
9.I know this may been asked many of times. But can you go hit the clubs when the 50's have arrived.
10.Does the 50's make the game seem more alive, more richer in terns of gameplay.

one of the gameplay videos shows vito having to decide what to do when confronted by a couple of guys who try to mug him.

Nope you can forget that since, Jack has said that no one except the mafia family knows that you have been made. But i guess that you fellow mafiosi will speak about your big day, and some will treat you diffrent when your a made man, or a "man of honor"
On another note: I agree with Fulcrum that meele weapons such as Baseball bats, knives, brass knuckles should be in the game. And since it aint it should come later on as free dlc. ;) It alls depends how much the consumer wants it. (or if the combat mechanics allows it)
I got one question for you Jack: I just love that you are going for realistic characters (the voice work is a dream, i especially like Sonny Marinelli voicework with Henry Tomasino) But would you consider some of the mafia characters as

Lucas Bertone parts were great but also boring...You had to drive on part of town then back to Salieri's bar....I for one like the fact that there are no side missions this time...I want to focus on the story...
Jack I have one question for you man:I watched a few minutes ago an interview with Denby and you were also present...He said that in the beginning nobody knows who you are and you have to pay for everything from clothes to guns....But later on when you get made you get all those thing for free and people know who you are...Is that still in the game? :D
No. That may have been in an old design, but we went for a more realistic approach. You're not some famous mobster that everyone is afraid of. Just like you could pass a mobster on the street and not even know it in real life, no one knows who the hell you are in the game world. You are nobody at the start, and you eventually become somebody, but even then, you're a somebody in a world full of somebodies.

Third time asking this,
I have a question for Jack, Question: Will most buildings be able to be torn apart sort of like the building in a trailer i have seen where there's a bunch of your friends shooting up a resterant or something, will most buildings be similar to this? where support beams fall wood snaps and things like that? As far as broken glass and broken props, i know about those, but i just wanted to know about any buildings being able to fall apart like the one showed in the PhysX Trailer
Thanks~!
He already answered that dude no they wont be.....Interiors of the locals and shops yes in which you can enter of course but buildings wont be....This is not Bad company 2.....Also made guys dont destroy buildings in the street.....

No. Entire buildings don't fall apart. You can shoot the **** out of the insides of any non-friendly building though and it will behave realistically with debris etc.

You never played bad company?
Okay well i know you've had to play GTA4
You remember one of the first intense shootouts where you have to chase after dimitri and bulgarin?
It's like that with pillars being chipped off and glass breaking, well like that but 20xs more destructive in mafia2.

Jack, I'm no hardcore player and get real frustrated if I have to redo a mission over and over, it tends to spoil the story for me, some have mentioned that it's a long time between checkpoints, are these real long?
I've played games where I've spent 30 minutes or more getting to a specific point only to be killed just before the checkpoint, if I fail on my third try I have to walk away from the computer before i put my foot through it.

As a possible buyer of Mafia 2 and a possible first time player of any Mafia game.
I just simply want to know why I should buy this game? I am very interested and that is why I joined these forums and been doing my research on the game.
What about this game do you believe seperates itself from other games similar to it on the market?
I must admit the graphics look amazing, just saw them for first time 2 weeks ago. Can't believe you are kind enough to answer so many questions, some of these people should stop being negative and be appreciative.

The cops will walk up to your car, or you on the streets, if you're doing anything illegal and stop it then hand you the ticket. They will throw in some comment about your offense too

Hopefully the comments are a little more diverse than in Mafia 1.
"You've broken the law, I'll have to fine you." *Reaches into his skin to pull out invisible ticket book*
"Here's the dough, Officer." *Reaches into stomach for invisible money*

Jack may I ask my questions agian because they were not anwsered.
I think they are good ones.
11.Finally which year did you perfer to play in 40's or the booming 50's.
That is all I have for right now.
