No. It's not.
Guess we'll just have to disagree.
What kind of crazy land do you live in where the weather changes every couple of hours every day? Explain to me how you feel it's unrealistic for the weather to stay the same in a full day. Yea I know every now and then weather changes throughout the day but for it to happen on the exact 15 days of Vito's life over a span of 10 years is quite unrealistic.

In the UK lol. One minute its raining next the suns out

the way the weather works in Mafia 2 has nothing to with realism, it's a design decision...

Every day? There's never a day where it's completely sunny or a day when it rains all day? Like I said I know weather can change throughout the day, it does it where I live too every once in a while. But if you think it's realistic for it to happen on the exact 15 days of Vito's life that we're playing over a span of 10 or so years then you need to get back in touch with reality.

Where the **** do you live? dry since april? maybe if you live in spain, definitley not the U.K
I'm in the U.K and the weather changes every few hours although it does happen on occasion that you get it all sunny or all rainy for an entire day (usually the latter) but not very often at all.

if someone said the sky was blue would you argue about that as well
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/2010/spring.html
Spring rainfall was below normal over almost the whole UK and it was especially dry across East Anglia, the north Midlands and Lancashire, where less than 60% of average was recorded. Provisionally, it was the driest spring since 1984 and ranks twelfth driest in the UK series from 1910. April and May were particularly dry months, with less than 50% of the monthly average rainfall recorded in April over much of England and Wales and in May over parts of western Scotland, central southern England and a broad swathe from East Anglia to Cumbria.

Yea I know, that's my point. Fulcrum seems to think that it's unrealistic to ride around with it being sunny all day...or raining all day. He seems to think that it's realistic for the weather to change back and forth daily on the exact 15 days we're playing over a 10 year span. It's like me or you randomly picking 15 days over the last 10 years of our life...do you honestly think that every one of those random days would have weather randomly changing every couple of hours? Kind of sounds like the opposite of realism to me.

uhh it says it was the driest spring, spring is a season not a day. Show me where it says it's been completely dry in the U.K since april.
This morning it was boiling hot, when I went out to walk the dogs it came on heavy rain and now it's dull but not particuarly cold. This my friend is the real world.
and if you picked 15 random days from the last 10 years of my life you'd probably have weather changing every few hours on at least 50% of those days.

I'm going to New York for a couple weeks next year. I'm going to be sure to write down how many times the weather randomly changes throughout the day each day that I'm there lmao. If it doesn't go from a sunny day to pouring back to a sunny day within hours every day then I must not be living in the real world.
I live in London and it's been cloudy for 3 days so I'm with Mafiashock still.

"very dry" isn't the same as "it has never rained". Which is my point. Weather changes, at least where I'm from about every few hours. It's very rare that for 24 entire hours it is muggy/humid or raining or cold or whatever.

I still wasn't talking to you :) I stopped the argument on the topic between us but I'm still going to comment on the absurdity of the subject. You've already shown how closed minded you are about this so there's really no point in going any further with you about weather in a video game lol.

closed minded? How exactly can pointing out a flaw (or suggestion for an improvement) of a game be regarded as closed minded? Because I don't automatically agree with you I'm closed minded?
"weather changes sometimes"

I never said it was going to change. Jesus, what about all these flaws people point out on GTA? They're not allowed to comment because the games finished? Are you on crack?
There is downsides to the game, just like every other game. And if I want to talk about them I will. Get over it.

Well that was uncalled for. There are downsides to the game no one ever said there wasn't. Some people like to reserve their judgement until they actually play the final product to see how everything fits in with the big picture. This isn't a sandbox game and you are expecting it to have sandbox qualities. You believe the weather is a flaw...I think it's more realistic the way they're doing it rather than using a dynamic weather system for a linear cinematic story driven game spanning 10+ years.

I'm pretty sure you can't. It's just there for aesthetics. Would much rather see a working barber shop, than a plaster that say's BARBER SHOP like in GTA IV.
Also it was a joke, you really need to calm down:(
Seriously Fulcrum, calm down. And you can't get a haircut because I doubt the game would let you have a mullet when you're getting made.

I'm not whining, I pointed out what is (in my opinion) a flaw in the game and all the fanboys started raping me with their closed minded crap.
far cry 2? Never played it. Honestly I don't even know what it is. I thought it was like COD or something, is it an open world game?
And those anger management techiques, are they for your benefit as well? Because honestly, I'm not angry I'm having a good ****ing laugh with this. You're the one jumping into conversations swinging blindly when you haven't even looked back to read the topic fully and realise that the fanboys caused the arguement, not me. Or perhaps you are also one of the many fanboys and your fanboyism has blinded you.

Sure sure, all i see is that you keep mocking people, just let it go! Feel free to point out all the negative in the game (Too short, no dynamic weather cycle blah blah blaaaaaaah) but when somebody gives you a valid reason for why they didn't include it in the game, just accept it.
Why would you want it that much anyway?
And you asked why they didn't include a weather cycle inbetween the missions, and people simply point out why they don't and you start insulting 2K's work, by saying they're focusing on so much realistic *ahem* sh it that no one cares about.
You're not the victim here boy.

So...your only argument is to call people fan boys because they don't agree with your crazy logic that 15 days out of a ten year span the weather happens to change back and forth every couple of hours for every one of those 15 days? God forbid somebody disagrees with you...they MUST be a fanboy.

Dude seriously, you need to calm down a bit. Just drop the subject, I will have to agree with what another member said: "The game is finished, so what's the point?" (or sum). Well, why take this conversation any further? You're claiming you're trying to put the fire out, but you're using gasoline. What are you talking about? Have you lostthe plot completely?
My point was I pointed out something that I felt was a negative thing for the game and all the fan boys (i.e YOU) went mental about it.
You can't take it that someone has a different opinion from you. You belittle my opinion calling it "crazy logic" and "closed minded" simply because you don't like seeing people saying some negative about the game you're having wet dreams about.
G.T.F.O it's my opinion, I think it sucks the weather will stay the same during free roam. I also think it sucks that the game is only 15 hours long. This is my opinion, you don't have to agree with it. Honestly I don't give a **** what you think. I stopped respecting your opinion the minute you started to get all pissy because you can't take someone not liking certain elements of your beloved game.
Man up.
I still say this is a contender for game of the decade (never mind GOTY) but it's not without it's flaws. I don't expect them to be changed, I just expect people to admit that flaws actually exist...well, I expect that from people who are blinded by fanboyism at least.

When have I ever said the game doesn't have flaws? You automatically go into this fan boy defense mode when someone disagrees with you. I posted my opinion you said it was wrong. What you fail to see here is that it is my opinion. There is no right or wrong, I think it would have made the game better, you don't. That's called a difference of opinion but no, your opinion had to be right. You keep stating it like it's some sort of fact. You're unwilling to let someone post a reason why they dislike the game, you simply won't let it happen. You jumped straight at them screaming about how wrong they are.

Not sure...the game doesn't feature a weather cycle, or a night/day cycle. So I'm assuming that whatever the last mission is (weather, and day or night wise) it'll be like that while free roaming.
Or possibly, it could simply be a pre set sunny day.

I see very few models different from persons walking along the street. It is easy to meet to two equal persons the same suit in 10 meters.
Example:
http://mafia-daily.net/wp-content/gallery/mafia-2-screenshots/shubert_lkw.jpg
Three men sitting equal.
There are many different models?
Yes there are many different models. Which ones you see will depend on which part of the city you're in. As with real life, certain neighborhoods in our game are dominated by a certain race or ethnic group.

Mafia II is very powerfull on story. did you guys just tried to bring a good story or you tried to say something beyond that too ? you know, like talking about America like The Godfather and how this country is going to influence on people and make them criminal. cause i feel Vito is very sad when he's not a pro killer and when america started to grow up in civilization Vito become a monster like America , something like Michel in The Godfather's trilogy.
2. You have created an indepth story about a persons life, human weakness can come in many forms, alcoholism for instance, where some people cannot get through a day without a drink, or maybe even drug addiction, or simply a weakness for the female form . So does the story present any of Vito's weaknesses (similar to what the Frankie Pott site is doing with his drug addiction)?

btw: can you show us that one thing that you told us to remind you about (the radio or something?):D
You've all seen way too much, but there's a lot that we haven't released or even hinted at, so please don't worry about the experience being ruined. You will be very surprised from start to finish.

Hey Jack, i am actually on my ps3 right now watching the Developer Diaries and i have 3 questions (I've asked them before but Im trying toget confirmation from you.) First, do you have any idea when the Earning Your Keep video is being released? Second , someone said you can free roam after beating the game, is that true? i hope so. Lastly, what do you think the chances are of you guys adding some DLC online mode? PS sorry if im annoying anyone who answered these questions earlier
Hi. I'm not really sure what that video even is. I don't have much to do with that stuff anymore.
You can free roam at almost any point during the missions. If you want to play a separate mode that's more focused on free roaming, you can do that in both the PS3's free DLC and also the Jimmy's Vendetta DLC.
We have no plans to release a multiplayer component at this time. I've said this elsewhere in this thread and explained why.

Heres the link to the song I'm talking about, it gave such an epic feeling everytime I heard it

-Last question, when you shoot someone in the head will there be blood on thier face or like when you shoot them anywhere on thier body will thier cloths be bloody after? Sorry if thats a wierd question but I just think it makes your gun feel more powerful when you see it do damage like how people look after they get shot in movies like goodfellas.
I'm a sucker for violence :D
Only because your avatar is awesome...
The Mafia theme is similar. It's quite powerful. Some of more sensitive members of the team even cried while it was being recorded with the live orchestra. Seriously.
And yeah, you will see blood if you choose to shoot people in the game.

Many great games have been released since Mafia 1 was released. These games did certain things and did them well, and gamers have come to expect this stuff in a game. That's why we updated the gameplay in Mafia II. It's still challenging but it won't make you throw the controller or mouse. And above all else, it's fun. Sorry if I haven't directly answered your question. My role was to help the team bring more of a cinematic feel to the game, and that has almost nothing to do with other games :)
Does Mafia II DLC include any of the cut side missions from Mafia II story?
I still hope that this mission wasn't cut from the main game:
http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/mafia-ii-gameplay-11-06-2009/334262

Yes, it runs well on PC. This is a benefit that PC users will get from the team's many optimizations for the consoles. If a tweak helped the consoles run the game better, then it usually really helps the PC run the game better. I used to run it on my Macbook Pro laptop at the voiceover recording sessions. (please don't ask what model/video/card/memory/resolution/frame rate etc.)

So does the story present any of Vito's weaknesses (similar to what the Frankie Pott site is doing with his drug addiction)?
1. Yes there is a social commentary buried somewhere in there. It is shown, not told. It's there for the observant to find. After you finish the game, come back and let me know what you think it is. It wasn't a goal or anything, just something I did when working on the dialog.
2. Vito is the main character. He must appeal to the audience and they must identify with him. I know a lot of guys like Vito. Like Vito, their only weakness is the desire to escape humble beginnings and attain success and everything that goes along with it. It's a "weakness" that most men have. On the other hand, most men (our core audience) wouldn't be able to identify with someone who is so weak and pathetic that they're addicted to drugs or they can't get through the day without a drink. You want to use drugs and alcohol, that's fine, but having a main character who lets that define who he is or allows it to limit what he can do, that would have been a mistake in this story.

I'm sure there are some plans for parties but I don't know what they are right now. We are not all planning for a party if that's what you're asking :)

the same as mafia I
because i like the carhandeling in mafia 1
Well, the cars are very different, so even if it was, they would behave differently. If you enjoyed driving in Mafia, you will enjoy simulation mode in Mafia II.

Jack; do you know if the preorder cars were taken out of the game to become bonuses? The two hot rods and the military jeep were seen long before the preorder bonuses were ever announced.
Nothing was taken out of the game to fulfill pre-order requirments. You need to build pre-order stuff these days, just like you nee to create DLC. It's been like that since I started working on games almost 12 years ago. It makes sense to create the pre-order stuff when you create the stuff you originally planned to be in the game. How or why these pre-order items ever got out, I don't know.
Also, think about this - would you have seen a military jeep on the roads of a major city back then??

Well; the fact that there was a military jeep driving by in plain view during a secondary release of the E3 09' gameplay would mean that you planned the DLC's quite early. And you would have seen a military jeep once in a while on the streets during WWII, not like normal cars but they weren't strange occurences.
Also; the jeep expy in the game and it's civilian version made by Walter: what is it called? I always though the "Steed" would be nice but I've never seen a particularly clever name for a jeep in a videogame yet. ;)
EDIT: Aye; why do I always get missed once I come up with a nice question.

The reason why I ask is because StarCraft II did, They had a huge midnight launch in California.

Do you think story wise there's anything that remotely compares to Mafia 2, quality, and finesse? Currently?
Also a question.
He was in the 101st, you can see from his shoulder patch on the war hero DLC.
Is the Operation Husky thing a rumor? From what the original post said, it seems that he was in Husky.
You'd think 2K would get something that trivial right? They did a great job on all the historical parts, even down to his uniform.
Is vito really in the 101st? Because like the poster mentioned it's sorta incorrect^

The Mafia theme is similar. It's quite powerful. Some of more sensitive members of the team even cried while it was being recorded with the live orchestra. Seriously.
And yeah, you will see blood if you choose to shoot people in the game.
Glad you think my avatar is awsome :D
I love when music has that powerful feeling to it, cant wait to hear it.

Jack, here's a somewhat odd question.
How do you guys come up with the character's appearances?
An early version of Vito, for example, looked a lot like a young Marlon Brando.
And Joe looks like a larger, fatter version of Joe Pesci (mostly the face), a little bit.
Do you use other people as a reference? Like, in... Assassin's Creed, for example, they used an actor to model the main characters after.

The inspiration could come from anywhere really. People of different races and whose ancestors are from certain geographical locations all have common facial features. So the artists sometimes just come up with something by starting with a basic head, and then they adjust each feature so that it's appropriate to that character's age, sex, race, and the part of the world they're from. Then we iterate on that character until they look like a real human.
Sometimes we use a real person as reference. Sometimes it's even a member of the dev team, or it could be someone who works in publishing. We start there, but we tweak it until they look like they belong in our game's world.
There is absolutely no Joe Pesci in Joe Barbaro. As a character, after I read the original script, we agreed that the biggest danger with him was to veer off into Joe Pesci's character of Tommy in Goodfellas. So he wasn't going to act like him, look like him, or sound like him. Don't get me wrong - I think that's Pesci's best performance ever, I just wanted us to do something original with Joe, not copy/paste a character from a movie into our game.
Personally I'm not a fan of using an actor's face for major characters. In just about all of the games I know of where this was done, I remember looking at the character and thinking "Wow, they could have done a lot better with this character model. The guy looks kinda like a douche."

One solution of the day/night cycle might also be a real-time representation, but then you would be probably limited by some timer not spending too much time in the city and just moving to the next mission point.
But I can't imagine the gta style here. You would start the Empire Arms mission in the shiny hot afternoon and leaving the building next morning with a storm going on.

See my answers below in CAPS.
1. ive seen the vids of vito having the ability to drink beverages, but does he the ability to eat food?
YES
2. do you see the the animations when eating or are there only beverages available in the game?
YES, YOU SEE THE ANIMATIONS WHEN HE EATS FOOD.
3. can u sit down anywhere? like if u see a bench outisde or a chair/booth in a diner, can you choose to sit?
ALMOST ANYWHERE THAT MAKES SENSE.
4. can you turn on and off the car radio whenever?
YES... EXCEPT FOR ONE VERY SPECIAL MOMENT.
5. if you turn the radio off and exit the car and get back in, will the radio be off? the same when u leave it on?
GOOD QUESTION. I NEVER HAVE THE RADIO OFF, SO I DON'T KNOW. IF YOU GET OUT, THEN GET BACK IN, THE SAME RADIO STATION SHOULD PLAY.
6. can you break the railing of bridges if travelling really fast?
YES, BUT ONLY THE FLIMSY ONES.
7. can u climb ladders, as well as those one's u find on the side of buildings(apartments, etc.)?
NO, THERE ARE STAIRS THAT BRING YOU WHERE YOU NEED TO GO.
8. can you push people, if so, hard enough into incoming traffic, train, etc.?
YES, YOU CAN PUSH PEOPLE, BUT I HAVE NEVER TRIED TO PUSH PEOPLE INTO TRAFFIC.
9. can you perform side or front rolls?
NO. VITO IS A WISEGUY, NOT A SPACE MARINE OR A SECRET AGENT :)
10. can you pop tires?

It's the fact that there's nothing else out there like it. It's the combination of this kind of shooting, driving, fighting, cars, music, characters, theme... all wrapped up in one package and set in a very unique time period in American history.

Cloth moves on the consoles, but it doesn't do so hyper-realistically like it does on a high-end PC capable of GPU-enhanced PhysX tricks.

So do you think in a way, Mafia 2 is revolutionary? In the sense that it's creating a linear experience, yet set in this large open sandbox world. Usually with sandbox games you'd have lackluster combat, or a lazy plot.
Because I've never seen a game like Mafia 2, that is linear, yet set in a open large city.

I already asked that for you:)
Here's what he replied

Correct.
It's just to a much lesser extent than the PC.
But it's still there.
And just because the PC version (when ran at it's full settings) looks better doesn't mean the console versions look bad. Still looks to me like one of the better looking games out there for either console.

Jack; the jeep expy in the game and its civilian version made by Walter: what is it called? As in what name pops up when you enter it? I always though the "Steed" would be nice but I've never seen a particularly clever name for a jeep in a videogame yet. ;) The name for the military truck too because I can't tell whether it's a Studebaker or a GMC base; maybe both.

It was taken out of the E3 '09 Gameplay; long before any preorder bonuses/dlc's were even planned. So what is it doing there if the cars were made especially for the bonus packs; and NOT taken out of the game as you said? :(

You guys should not presume to know when these things were planned. We planned for preorders and other DLC starting in 2006. Everything we create, whether it's for the main game, DLC, pre-order DLC, or whatever, has a chance to appear in the early demos of the game that we show to the public. These demos are representative of the final game, but you should not expect the exact same cars/guns/clothing etc. to appear in the final game.

Sorry guys, but I'm not going to respond to any more questions like "what did you remove?" or "what did you cut?" Some of you are speculating and fearing the worst and over-analyzing everything we tell you.
After you complete the game, as I have said previously, I'd love for you to come back to this forum and tell us what you liked and what you didn't, and what you think can be improved in future games. If this information is presented in a clear and concise manner, and there is no whining or debate over this feature vs that feature or this game vs that game, then we will actually read it and may even take it into account when thinking about future games.

The only people who are happy with an 8 are the ones who shipped a game they thought would be a 7. That's not us.
I have no idea what that comment could mean. Maybe he was expecting Vito to be wearing a plumber's outfit and rescue a princess, I don't know. All the reviewers I've spoken to have done nothing but praise the story.

I'm sure it was tempting to make Mafia 2 more open world, and more mainstream. It's a relief it's sticking to it's gun's so to speak.
I just wonder how linearity is considered a negative, when you, denby, and even Alex have mentioned that it's a linear narrative set in a large open city. It seems that the reviewer was expecting gta in the 50's:rolleyes:

If someone reviews a full game for a published review, it has to be gold. Beta means the game is done and we're just fixing minor bugs. Gold means we've fixed the bugs and we're gonna ship it.

From what I know about how reviews work, all of the reviews (and associated web sites' summaries of printed reviews) are all supposed to start coming out on the same day, so **** like this where a summary of one review hits and everyone analyzes the **** out if it, does not happen. I don't know when the reviews will start hitting, but it's probably gonna be soon. When the real review comes out, there is little chance I'll read it. I believe it's from a UK-based magazine and honestly I've never heard of it before. I'm way over here in the US.

Jack another review is in from the Official Xbox Magazine, there verdict is a 7/10
They say the city is nice, the soundtrack is good.
They say the characters and surrounding cast you created were boring and don't make the "cut". The action sequences were also lack luster for them, and so were the car chases.
They were very dissapointed.
There words:
the good part:
''the feeling of potential and atmosphere in these early stages of mafia 2 rivals the very best open world world games. The city-especially one small segment of alleyways that is seen when you walk from the roadside to your mother's apartment - is stunningly put together. walking into cafeterias and clothes boutiques, listening to period radio, even just sticking vito's nose against the wall to read games WWII propaganda posters or beautiful textures, you get a sense of craftmanship that makes you think you've got one hell of a game coming up.''
the bad parts (mainly the characters):
''nobody in mafia2, not vito, nor his friends, nor the rest of the extended cosa nostra, is somebody you'd want to spend any amount of time with. good mafia movies (not to mention the mafia game that spawned this one) understand the importance of making their mafiosos entertaining and fundamentally warm people, and then delicately applying the kind of fear and tension that has to exist in an organisation built almost exclusively from career-minded killers. mafia 2's cast don't quite make the grade in any respect. At best they are relatively boring people to be stuck ina car withand the banter routinely reaches such lows as 'says the guy who can barely change a lightbulb'. At worst they are childish, misogynistic idiots. Having quickly repaid his mothers loan, Vito in particular does not seem to have any kind of decent reason for being in the mob besides being work-averse, which doesn't drum up a great deal of sympathy as he 'moiders' his way to riches and respect.''
''which isn't to say the script is completely terrible, it will hold your attention - it just won't give anything back. its exactly the same with the driving and shooting. for all the hundreds of man hours that have gone into making Empire city, mafia's 2 missions feel a little drab. You're not quite driving the cars as much as dragging them through the city...and while the 3rd person based cover based shooting is perfectly satisfying, 95 percent of enemies will spawn run to a certain piece of cover and stay in the same position just popping up and down forever like a target at a funfair. the stealth are missions traditionally the bane of games like this - are actually really fun to play, but there are only a couple of them clocking in at about 8-10 mintues each.
''still throughout it all there is something untouchably seductive about wearing a sharp suit, sat in a bulbous car, travelling down various 1940's american streets with some delta bluesman howling at you fromt he radio. if you can't wait for L.A Noire, Mafia 2 might just make the wait a little bit more bearable.''

Jack, what ar your thoughts on the modern Mafia? Do you find them interesting, do you think that there could be an interesting story for a game set in modern times?
I think what's most interesting is that like everyone else, the modern mafia has had to evolve and change in reaction to new technologies. Imagine how easy it was for them to communicate in the early 1950s - the only tech they really had available had the phone, and the FBI swore that they didn't even exist.
Now look at what we have today - phone, email, sms, IM, audio and video surveillance etc., all potentially being monitored by authorities who are looking to take them down. I'd imagine the stress level of today's wiseguys is a little higher than it was 60 years ago.
While we could come up with a story set in the modern day, I'm personally partial to historical settings when it comes to story-driven games. It allows us to re-create a time period and a world that no longer exists. The artists really get into it because to them, it's new. When you're creating a realistic modern day setting, it's just not quite as much fun.
If we do end up doing a game with a modern setting, whether it's a Mafia game or not, I'd imagine we'd probably go to exotic locations and other countries, not just make a city that looks like exactly like the ones we live in.

I'm pretty sure that Tuesday was historically the day where foot traffic was lowest in the music stores, meaning that the least amount of people came into the stores on Tuesdays. So the retailers would release the new music on a Tuesday and promote this date in order to get people into their stores on a day that was traditionally the slowest, increasing overall sales. The people were gonna be there anyway on Friday or Saturday, so I guess that makes sense.
It's like this in the restaurant business as well. Tuesdays are usually pretty dead, so that's when bars and restaurants have their specials and coupons.
