Hi
Will we be able to keep on playing in Empire Bay like we did in Mafia I in the freeride modes or does the game ends when the missions are finished? (like saint's row for example) More specifically, is there a freeride mode?
Thanks.

But like Fugue mentioned at one point this game was more GTA like. But it quickly developed to "no let's erase all of that, and stick with are roots."
For example why did you get rid of the multiple scenarios (if I remember correctly you would be able to chose your own family, and other moral descions)?
I do not remember that being true at any point in the last 5 years of development. There was a lot of stuff on paper that ended up not making it into the game, and that has happened with every game ever made. The goal was to stick with the strengths of Mafia 1 right from the start of my involvement. I can't speak to what the game was designed to be back in 2002.
I've never heard anything about being able to choose your own family. That mechanic would absolutely not work in Mafia II because of the way the story plays out.

will there be blood i mean enough blood ?jaja l¡ke huum blood splatered in the window of the car when you shoot trough?...i remember a feature in mafia that looked very creepy but very cool, when you shoot a car with someone inside and it explodes, you could see the corpse burned will there be that kind of oh snap! features
Damn good question. I wish I had an answer. I guess I'm always too busy shooting to notice the aftermath. I can tell you that there will be plenty of moments in the game that will shock you though, while other moments will make you feel like a total badass.

Hello, Again Jack. :)
In addition to my list of questions...
I really want to know if this jacket has made it into the final game, It's my most favourite jacket in Mafia II.
Vito is wearing the jacket in the photo below...

Can you still read newspapers
I don't think so, because I didn't write any newspaper headlines or articles for you guys to read. You will see NPCs reading them, but you cannot actually "read" them yourself.

I wish I can spray someone inside the car with machine gun, and their blood splatter to the window... and then the car itself full of bulletholes. Just like the classic mob execution style.

I think that jacket match with Vito, especially when he's still become a petty criminal. Too bad you guys discarded it from the game.
Why have you decidet to keep bikes out of the game? I understand that wiseguys don't ride bikes, but motorcycles were popular in the 50s, and It would be fun to se some people driving around in that era.
When I think about 50s I think about movies like The Wild One

What are your favourite games?
Are there any games that had any influence on Mafia II after they came out?
In no particular order, and probably leaving out several of them:
Planescape: Torment, (find it and play now it if you enjoy amazing story and writing in a game) Half-Life 2, Unreal Tournament (the original), Jedi Knight II, Baldur's Gate II, Phantasy Star, KOTOR, Warcraft III, Street Fighter 2, Diablo II, Gears of War 2, Mass Effect 2, Halo 1, Fable 2
The only game that really influenced Mafia II was the first Mafia game :) There have been some games released in the past few years that I have found to be very encouraging though, because if they can succeed with their poorly written and executed stories and horrific voice acting, that means we should do even better.

hey jack, thanks for answering all my questions, you've been a great help!!
i have a question, that was sort of a hot forum thread in the past...
Will there be children in the game?..besides cut-scenes?..and if there are, did 2k restrict the player from shooting them?..
and sorry if this question was answered already..
Don SUCKFACE
07-10-2010, 01:15 AM
No kids will appear in gameplay. You will see dogs in certain areas.
Pedestrians will do natural things like stop and talk to one another, look at things in the world, mail letters at mailboxes, etc. and will also react to the player's various actions.
no childeren besides the cutscenes.

A few more questions for you Jack.
1. Many members seem distraught over the no public transportation aspect. They don't understand why, considering this was a neat aspect (to hop on a trolly, or take a train) to Mafia 1. What was the motivation to take away the public transportation, why did you feel the need to?
2. Is the 1st Chapter still considered a big secret? Because the 1st acheivement is called Viva La Resistance. While the 2nd is called Home Sweet Home.

hi Jack, i was wondering if there will be a mission that suck you in, i mean, i played 1 specific mission in Call of Duty 4 that was amazing, the atmosphere, the events in that mission, and the change of dynamic in the gameplay. Did you remember an specific mission in Mafia II that you're shure is one of the most dynamic and fantastic parts of the game? (in Mafia there was few of them, like in the farm with that cool storm, or the gunfight in the parking lot or in the restaurant with Don Salieri)
Oh and other one jeje, there will be bosses like in the first Mafia, you know people who is stronger than normal gangsters like Sam in the last chapter or Carlo in the lucky bastard chapter...there will be that kind of system of bosses?

You can't mix and match things, but you will have the option of buying/wearing many different outfits. The team has created what I think are some great choices as far as clothing goes, but remember, this is a game about the mob and Vito is not a Barbie doll :)

Where I come from, if someone pushes you on purpose, the proper response is to do your best to beat the living **** out of him. That being said, what you saw was only for the demo. Some pedestrians will run away in the full game. The nice little old ladies will behave like nice little old ladies, for example, and will not try and fight you :)

1. Yes, in certain ways.
2. We didn't do a day/night cycle in this game. The lighted windows in each night mission are up to the artists.
3. I'm sorry, but I do not understand this question.
4. Fences, yes. Fire escape ladders, not that I know of.

At 2K we never have to do things just so we can check it off our list of things that should be in a game. If we're not going to be able to create something we're going to be proud of, we're not going to put it in our game. This was no different than when we did BioShock. Better to put all the resources on the single player experience than to end up with a lesser single player experience and mediocre multiplayer.
Can you hint at any possible plans for MP DLC or can you confidently so that there will be no multiplayer ever...

A few more questions for you Jack.
1. Many members seem distraught over the no public transportation aspect. They don't understand why, considering this was a neat aspect (to hop on a trolly, or take a train) to Mafia 1. What was the motivation to take away the public transportation, why did you feel the need to?
Hopefully they will stop crying when they realize how much fun driving is in Mafia II. We cut the public transportation for many reasons. It's a lot of work to get right, it presents logistical challenges, it eats up memory that can instead be used for other things, it wouldn't make full use of our radio system, and it serves no gameplay purpose whatsoever.
Besides all of that - wiseguys don't use pubic transportation. You know who takes the subway or the bus in the opinion of a wiseguy? A ****in' bum. A loser. A guy with no money and no class. A guy who can't afford a car and doesn't have the balls or the connections to otherwise acquire one. This is the big city we're talking about. Cars are a luxury few can afford, especially nice cars, and that's one of the things being a wiseguy is all about - the good life, luxury cars, nice clothes, girls, booze, etc. So if you want to play Mafia II you're going to play as a wiseguy, and I recommend you shut your mouth, grow some balls, and get yourself a car.
And personally, the absolute last thing I would want to see on August 24 is an online video of some jackass who played on easy mode, with cheats, skipped every cutscene, took public transportation to instantly teleport around the game world, and claimed that he finished the game in really short amount of time.
When we got a bit too feature-heavy with the design, we sat all the features down and asked them what they brought to the table. Do you enhance the story? Do you add meaningful gameplay that will be appreciated and experienced by most players? Why should we make you? Those that did not successfully answer those questions, were killed. Violently.
2. Is the 1st Chapter still considered a big secret? Because the 1st acheivement is called Viva La Resistance. While the 2nd is called Home Sweet Home.
I had absolutely nothing to do with the achievement names that people have been talking about, (they're all in British if you haven't noticed) so I can't really comment on these or any inferences you may have made after reading them.

Let me make myself more clearer. Each Chapter is given a title, so for example Chapter 1 is entitled Viva La Resistance, while Chapter 2 is titled Home Sweet Home. We know that Chapter 2 has Vito returning from the war, but what will chapter 1 contain?
I know at one point it was considered a big secret, is that still the case??

People liked Mafia 1 for freedom of action, for the opportunity to travel on a mission to trams, subway to explore the world as a taxi driver, just to enjoy the city. You haven't played the game, so you can't judge it! Stop making comparisons with other games, this is Mafia II, not GTA V. Yeah, I approve the lack of public transportation as Jack said - it's a game dedicated to the mafia and the culture, and the way a real wiseguy woud behafe. We don't need cellphones, cabs, girlfriends or fvcking bowling.
btw: In Mafia 1 I used the train one time, because Paulie for whatever reason wished to go with Tommy to the bank by train.

Since Mafia 2 is primarily a third person shooter I expect we'll be killing hundreds if not thousands of enemies throughout the game. This high kill count can lessen the believability when you compare it to popular mob movies where maybe only 10 or 15 people die. Obviously the shooting and enemies make up a large gameplay component, so it's understandable in that aspect.
But how do you keep the game believable when the player is forced into these implausible situations where many people are killed?
Also good to see you're a fan of Planescape Torment - truly one of the best stories in videogames!

Out of everything that can be done in MAfia 2, as well as a great story about the La Cosa Nostra, you're dream of this game is crushed because you can't ride a subway or train? Really? I rather have the extra juice it takes to run that go into something far better like the story or extra gameplay that actually makes you feel like a Mafia guy.

Hi,
If I cause havoc in the street (crashes a couple of cars) - will the wrecks disappear as soon as I leave them or can I return to find them there?
Certain games (GTA4 for example) has very small memory when it comes to these things - you just have to drive a couple of meters and turn back to find that everything is gone!

Yeah but you are not playing some random guy that landed on the docks from eastern europe. You are playing a guy that wants to be a made man.
This is a high risk business, wise guys don't ride trains or subways and they don't get a job working for peanuts driving taxi's. :P

I can already tell though, That Mafia II will not be as revolutionary as Mafia I. And has in fact gone to a more " GTA STYLE " audience of gamers, It appears they have pretty much turned there backs towards Mafia I on realism & creativity. It's a real shame to be honest, I was expecting everything that Mafia I had and more, But they have gone to a more " GTA STYLE " I guess cause it makes business sense to do that, But there is a reason as to why I loved Mafia I so much, Was because it was different, It was so much more realistic then other games, I just don't see atm any creativity, And any realism that matches Mafia I, It's all been " GTA'd ". And it makes me sad, It really does. :(
I wish Mafia II kept everything that Mafia I had and just added.:(
I hope Mafia II has alot of realism like what Mafia I had, But atm from what I have seen it's not likely gameplay-wise.
Don't get me wrong though, The graphics are incredible, The cover system is fantastic looking, The animations are superb, The dialogue looks mint, And everything else is mint, I just wish the small realistic features were still in Mafia II.

God damn, if you want Mafia 1 play Mafia 1. It makes no sense to remake a next-gen version of Mafia 1, it wouldn't sell well and the company would be ridiculed greatly.
It's a new game and you need to accept it for what it is. I personally, think it looks awesome and I can't wait to play it

Some people are funny when they are angry:D . That quote made me LOL.
I Wouldnt say that public transport its a big deal for me, but i agree that its silly not to have the chocie to use a Taxi, or Tram, Train when you want to. It takes away some realism , even if i chose to take the car like a real car loving Mafioso ;)

don't forget Mafia 1 port for consoles wasn't made by Illusion Sofworks/2Kcz, it was horrible but I don't think it's right to compare the two, there's a huge amount of 360 footage out there, you can see how good it is :)

as for Mafia 2 being "GTA style" because of the "cuts.."
everything is mint but taking out things that didn't really have any impact on the core of Mafia 1's gameplay makes it GTA'd?
Trains and trams, never really used them, manual gears, same, that leaves dropping ammo and health packs, I've completed Mafia 1 mores times than I can remember, if there was a mod that changed those things it wouldn't change what made the game so good at all....
I know it's just opinions, but these things don't have any impact on Mafia's concept, that's about story, characters, movie like experience, the atmosphere, the cars etc etc, it's 8 years later, changes are inevitable but it looks to me like there are a hell of lot more for the better.

What do you mean? What cuts? I don't think Mafia same with GTA.
EDIT: Ah now I get what you mean. Yeah, maybe the game play has little bit changed, still realistic-but not uber realistic like in the previous game. Maybe the devs aim for fun purpose, and I can understand that. That's not a big deal for me. The most important thing for me is the story itself, gameplay is the second thing, although I'm statisfied with the gameplay that I saw from the videos.
I just want to say thank you to all ladies & gentlemen who participate in the making of Mafia II!!!!

Agreed. An it really sounds like they are trying to create a even MORE cinematic experience. It seems that if a feature doesn't benefit the overall story, then it's deemed useless. An you know what? That takes balls, because you could easily go the saints row path and plug in pointless things. Until Mafia 2, I have yet to see developers so DEVOTED on the story for a video game. It's breath taking.
An I'm really surprised about this whole public transportation fiasco. Okay, I get it, sure it might take some of the realism out. But your part of the mafia, like Jack said, your a bum if you have to ride the bus to get to your destination. Sure they could've easily added rideable taxi's, and buses, and subs, but that would've used pointless time and energy, when they could easily be polishing the cut scenes or other story elements.

Exactly! :) ... but i think, at least for me personally, one of the major things that Mafia has that basically no other game does is that you actually get a FEELING when playing it (and the ending) which can pretty much only be obtained from high quality films. basically... Mafia holds up well against quality mob films etc where as basically all other games pretty much do not because take GTA series for example, those games are definitely quality but when compared to top quality films they are at least a notch or two below those where as Mafia is on par with top quality films basically when it comes to story/characters etc. so when you have that along with a game that is fun to play it makes it really stand out and makes it quite memorable and, like i said before, Mafia is like a quality film as it never gets old.
plus the characters/story/gameplay all came together very nicely because even if Mafia had a quality story but the gameplay etc was missing then the game would have not been nearly as good as it was and still is. Mafia is a very unique gaming experience as there is nothing else really like it in the gaming world.
which is something your typical gamer cannot see or appreciate because it does appear the hardcore Mafia fans (i.e. Me and others in this forum) truly appreciate the game unlike your average gamer who will play it, think it's good, and then quickly forget about it and move onto the next game as those are the types who just can't SEE Mafia (series) greatness. (i know people's tastes can vary and all but it's kind of sad that i have yet to see another game do what Mafia did and it's been 8 years later with all these technology advancements etc. you would think at least 1 other game would have competed with Mafia by now in terms of the overall experience but there has not been none)
p.s. and for the record... all those games you mentioned can't hold a candle to Mafia even though there sales figures are generally top notch for them. some of the Call of Duty games i liked but they seem to be getting fairly repetitive now. and Gears of War i briefly played but did not really care for it but one game series that's super popular on consoles but i personally think is vastly overrated is the 'Halo' series as i think a multiplayer shooter (on PC) like Counter-Strike is FAR better.

it is odd, Mafia was a critical success, and I think the last figures I read were 2 million+ sales, which isn't bad really.
but it really just reflects the market for games, it's the same for movies, blockbusters still generate the most money but a lot don't really require you to take your brain to the cinema ;)
if I had to make a list of games that even came just a little bit close to having the same impact on me it would be VERY short, some of mine...

this probably should be another thread, Jack will have to wade through pages of rubbish to get to the questions...
I read through the entire thread, very interesting questions and answers. Thanks a lot for answering this flood of questions Jack.
I've got a few more of them:
1. Earlier in the thread I read that there will be no big countryside in Mafia 2. I thought the large countryside in Mafia 1 was amazing, as it gave the feeling of not being stuck in one city, there were no obvious ending roads, and the whole game world felt large because of it. I loved the airport, petrol station and farmhouse missions for example, because it gave some variety in the gameplay when you had to drive far away into unexplored areas that you barely knew existed.
Were there several reasons for not having a large countryside in M2, or just simply because the data could not fit on the disc or for taking up too much performance? Could the consoles not handle it? I remember it being a little loading sequence whenever you entered M1's countryside, but peronally I didn't mind that at all. I was really hoping for a beautiful countryside with the brilliant Mafia 2 graphics.
2. Any chance of a map-expanding DLC later on?
3. As a PC gamer(haven't touched my ps3 for a year now), I can't help but feel that all games that are cross platform gets a bit "dumbed down" in order for it to work properly cross-platform. Nice little details have to be removed, compromises has to be made etc, not only when it comes to graphics. Are details that the consoles can not handle taken away from the PC experience as well, just in order to create the same experience? Or will we be able to enjoy a real "pc game experience"? With that I mean game menus designed for pc, graphics that will bring your computer to 20fps and on its knees if your really want to and so on.
4. If the game would've been made exclusively for PC, do you think you would've been able to come out with an even better, polished game with less compromises?
5. On which platform do you prefer to play the game on?

There is a country side in mafia 2. If you look at the collectors edition map you'll notice side roads that lead to the country. When asked if this is in the game, jack responded "yes." So basically you'll still have a country side, but lesser.

I made a comparison image a while ago of 2 different map images, I don't know which one that is the newest. Looks like there might be a possible countryside road going up top right on one of the maps, but is the countryside you are talking about the little short road to the left on the other one? That's not much of a country side if you ask me.

Already been answered. No he can't.
i gotta admit tho no form of public transport whatsoever? 7 years in the making? no swimming? GTA did both? what gives?
Im getting worried the story can't hold out considering the odds it has against it with this load removed and to be honest, it just don't seem that long.
AHH well....
maybe i will just join in real life and ride a tram and bus and taxi everywhere and swim in any body of water i can just because i can.

i hope 2k do a good job on this and will enjoy it nevertheless but it seems no game will never be perfect... something always has to be sacrificed for another thing to be included. :(
GOD DAMMIT!!!
You just don't get it. And seriously: in real life, you swim in the city water? Really? You do that? Now, that's just nasty.
And did GTA IV had a good mission that involved swimming? I don't think so.
Why would you want to have swimming in Mafia 2? Just because it's something Vito should be able to do?
And public transportation... have you used trains in GTA IV? You did? Why? Trains just aren't fun to drive. You need taxis in GTA, because it's a sandbox game and missions are scattered all over the city and you sometimes want to fast travel to the next mission. Mafia II is a linear game. You don't have missions scattered all over the city.
Try to understand that having swimming and public transportation takes time and money to make. Why have it, if it does nothing for the story? Do you want to be driven in Gran Turismo 5 or do you want to drive the cars yourself? Do you want to have public transportation in Mirrors Edge? Do you want to have clothing stores in Half Life 2?

Hi,
If I cause havoc in the street (crashes a couple of cars) - will the wrecks disappear as soon as I leave them or can I return to find them there?
Certain games (GTA4 for example) has very small memory when it comes to these things - you just have to drive a couple of meters and turn back to find that everything is gone!
Hit the road Jack! ;)
They do eventually go away, but it's not immediate. Sorry I can't be more specific. This is one of those things I've never tested personally.

Please trust me that you do NOT need to worry about quality differences in the console versions vs the PC version. We took great care to develop all 3 versions side by side. That's one of the big reasons why the game was delayed - we wanted the same level of quality across 3 different platforms and we wanted them all shipping on Day 1. This is not easy to do with a game like Mafia II.

Why 2K leave us behind? I mean the 360 & PC owners. Why? We deserve to get the exclusive content too.
Well then it wouldn't be exclusive :) You will have the same core experience as the PS3 owners when you play Mafia II. We didn't remove anything from the game on 360 and PC, we just added something to the PS3 version because that is what the people who get paid to make those decisions told us to do. As a gamer, I used to get frustrated by exclusivity just as you do, so I bought a PS3 to go along with my 360 and PC and voila, I can experience everything. And if it's any consolation, if you're a PC gamer, you will have higher resolution graphics, GPU-enhanced PhysX, nvidia 3D and 3D vision surround. That's all exclusive to the PC version.
Why have you decided to keep bikes out of the game? I understand that wiseguys don't ride bikes, but motorcycles were popular in the 50s, and It would be fun to see some people driving bikes.
When I think about 50s I think about movies like The Wild One. Didn't Greaser (one of the gangs in Mafia II) rode bikes?

In a certain conversation will the characters sometimes use certain words we've heard a million times in movies or you guys tried to keep things different?
This is a really good question. As far as the dialog goes, this was the hardest project I've ever worked on. It can make or break a script and Mafia II's script was fairly enormous.
As our game world is based on NYC in the 1950s, most characters you meet in the game or overhear on the streets with have a NY accent and will use certain slang from that era. I didn't look up 50's slang on the internet and throw it in there mixed with the residual Italian/Siclian words that Italian- and Sicilian-Americans and the people around them tend to use, add some naughty words, and call it a day. Instead I wrote the dialog based on how real people speak. When I got stuck, I usually just had to ask myself "What would Grandpa say here?"
If the actor performing the dialog wasn't "getting it" and wasn't sounding natural, I either re-wrote the line during the recording session to something that did sound natural, or we worked on it until they got it right.
Trivia: The seemingly ubiquitous "fuhgedaboudit" is not said once in Mafia II's script, and any actor who repeatedly and annoyingly inserted that term into their lines during an audition was not cast.
If you're talking specifically about the "Brooklynese" as we sometimes call it, this script was a minefield to some of the actors who had the voice and acting ability, but didn't grow up using that kind of speech. There are many Italian and Sicilian words that Italian-Americans still use. However, the pronunciation of these words is tricky. For example, if you walk into an Italian deli in NY and order "capicola" (ka-pee coh-lah) you'll probably get a confused look. This is because it's pronounced "gabagoal" or "gabagool." Similarly, the word "madonna" is pronounced "mah-doan" or "mah-roan." Not every character in the script uses these words, but some do, and it was funny hearing some of the actors' pronunciations the first time we tried the line :)
If you're referring to expletives and other harsh language, and characters expressing controversial points of view, then yes, that is in there. I've talked about that elsewhere in this thread.

Jack,
When you walk around the city after being made, will people respect you more and not fight you or maybe even be scared of you a little? Also when you are finally made, do you get made men perks like cheaper food, clothing, and ammo just to name a few?
Thanks!

1) Whether will be in game of Lupara?
2) Whether there will be in game improvised subjects with which it is possible to cause a loss to opponents. For example - a breakage, a bucket etc.
3) Will the water congeal in winter? If so then the ice will crack, breaks?

I made a comparison image a while ago of 2 different map images, I don't know which one that is the newest. Looks like there might be a possible countryside road going up top right on one of the maps, but is the countryside you are talking about the little short road to the left on the other one? That's not much of a country side if you ask me.
No. There's a whole thread about it http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72646

Trivia: The seemingly ubiquitous "fuhgedaboudit" is not said once in Mafia II's script, and any actor who repeatedly and annoyingly inserted that term into their lines during an audition was not cast.
No "fuhgedaboudit"? C'mon...

KOTOR! Awesome!

hi Jack, i was wondering if there will be a mission that suck you in, i mean, i played 1 specific mission in Call of Duty 4 that was amazing, the atmosphere, the events in that mission, and the change of dynamic in the gameplay. Did you remember an specific mission in Mafia II that you're shure is one of the most dynamic and fantastic parts of the game? (in Mafia there was few of them, like in the farm with that cool storm, or the gunfight in the parking lot or in the restaurant with Don Salieri)
There are definitely moments like that in there, but I can't say what they are without giving too much away. After you play it, come back and let me know what you think they were.
Oh and other one jeje, there will be bosses like in the first Mafia, you know people who is stronger than normal gangsters like Sam in the last chapter or Carlo in the lucky bastard chapter...there will be that kind of system of bosses?
Yes, but I want to make clear that you won't experience a typical video game "boss fight" with the most powerful guys in Empire Bay. It seemed pretty ridiculous to us that an 80-year-old mob boss would once again pick up his tommy gun and become a lot more powerful than any other character in the game world :)

hello jack ...there is my first post on this thread :D it is there a v-sync graphic option to turn on/off in the demo / full game ?The all gameplays that are on the net--youtube , gametrailers, they have the apex/psyhics thing turned on ? how many hours of story gameplay(approximately) will have the full game :D thanks
I don't get involved with all of the technical details, but I'll give this a shot.
v-sync - I assume so. I have never experienced frame tearing on any version of the game.
story gameplay - I don't want to put a number on it, even if I did know what that number was. There is always whining no matter what you say when you give out a number like this. My playthroughs are always on the hardest difficulty level no matter what game I play, so I will take longer to complete a game as compared to the player who plays in easy mode. Some of the chapters take you more than an hour, others may take you less.

Thanks again Jack for everything, It means alot to me and all of us that you are here and talking with the community. :)
No problem. Keep the good questions coming, stay on topic, follow the forum rules, and I'll visit as often as I can :)
I honestly don't know if the jacket made it into the final version of the game. I haven't seen it in a while, but that doesn't mean it's cut. As I've said elsewhere, I think Vito looks best in his leather jacket, and the only time I change Vito's clothes is when the game makes you do so. That's just my personal preference. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Sorry but this is one of those things where I'm going to make you wait and see. It's really great that so many people are interested in the game and are asking questions, but the last thing I want to do is have you fire up the game next month and know everything that's going to happen.

Citizens in the city don't react to your status. When a wiseguy gets made, does anyone outside of the mob know about it? No, they don't :) That being said, Vito's life will improve after getting made.
2K_Jack
07-11-2010, 01:55 PM
Since Mafia 2 is primarily a third person shooter I expect we'll be killing hundreds if not thousands of enemies throughout the game. This high kill count can lessen the believability when you compare it to popular mob movies where maybe only 10 or 15 people die. Obviously the shooting and enemies make up a large gameplay component, so it's understandable in that aspect.
But how do you keep the game believable when the player is forced into these implausible situations where many people are killed?
Also good to see you're a fan of Planescape Torment - truly one of the best stories in videogames!
On the story end of it, we justify the big shootouts with the fact that Vito is taking his fight to the enemy, basically invading their base of operations. There are naturally a lot of guys with a lot of guns in these places. It is a videogame tough, so if we did our job right, suspension of disbelief will kick in and you'll forgive the little exaggerations we need to make in order to keep things fun.

the point of not letting you ride public transport is because they want you to drive around the city and check it out also they want you to drive all the cars in the game.
Yes. Plus the music on the radio is a huge part of the experience for me personally, and I'd hate for anyone to play through the game without experiencing it.

Exactly! :) ... but i think, at least for me personally, one of the major things that Mafia has that basically no other game does is that you actually get a FEELING when playing it (and the ending) which can pretty much only be obtained from high quality films.
That's a statement I think most Mafia fans would agree with, and that's what we focused on when creating Mafia II.

When we can create a motorcycle driving experience that's as good as our car driving experience, we'll put it in a game. This is one of those things that I agree would fit into the game world, but wasn't as easy to do as you'd think from a technical standpoint. The variety of cars makes up for it :)

Hello Jack
Will mafia 2 be a FULL HD(1080p) game, or it will be somehting around 720p.
To answer your question - I don't know. It looks great at 720p and knowing what I know about console games, I've never even bothered to change the resolution. Let me explain...
If you've played PC games, you know that with increased resolution comes decreased frame rate. But running console games at 1080p (a massive jump from 720p) produces no performance decrease compared to running them at 720p. How do they do that? No console games actually render 1080 lines. They render frames at something like 800x600 and then they get scaled to 720p or 1080 before the video signal gets sent to your TV. The UI or HUD will scale differently and will be sharper at 1080p, but the graphics look the same.
If you want the sharpest picture possible, get the PC version. The PS3 and 360 both look great, but the PC version with all the bells and whistles turned on looks incredible.

ill totally agree. because the bottom line is as long as it's close enough time frame (which i am sure it is) and it fits the 'moment' in the game then that's all that really matters at the end of the day.
i think all the whiners are far to concerned with random stuff like this as it's basically nit picking to even bring up the time frame as surely there is other stuff in that game to be more concerned with.

I am told only "August" by the people responsible for getting the demo to you guys. Please understand that it's a complex process to get a demo done and get it to you. It's no longer as simple as it was back in the old days where we just made a PC demo and posted it to a few web sites. There is also strategy as well. We know all of you animals will download the demo as soon as we release it. It's the other 20 million or so people that we need to take into account. The demo release must be announced and must coordinate with our marketing campaign. This is the kind of stuff we do at the 2K publishing level.

2. I hope so. But I can tell you that it won't be another 8 years before we bring you our next game...

Arcade is hell of a lot of fun. Simulation is more for people who like playing with a steering wheel peripheral. It makes the driving more releastic but at the same time more challenging compared to the arcade setting.
I'm not sure what your second question means. Can you clarify a bit?
+1 for simulation mode!!!!
That is great news thank you. I will not ask another question though, i want to be utterly surprised by M2 upon the first play.

Today, the overall story and most of the key characters in the original script still remain, but the game we're shipping is definitely somewhat different than what we had on paper 3 years ago.
I can't really say what happened between 2002 and the end of 2005, because I was not working on the project. I know it started as a PS2 game, which made a lot of sense back then. Development went past the end of that console generation, which meant that it had to be revised for the current console generation. With more technical possibilities come more story/gameplay possibilities, so I assume the script evolved a lot from the original PS2 design and went through a lot of rewrites, as all scripts do.
When I was asked to have a pass at it, Dan gave the script to me for a while and I did my thing to it, and then we worked together to produce something we were happy with. This is the usual process we follow with story-driven game scripts.
After Dan was no longer personally involved in the project, the story and the gameplay continued to evolve, and the script had to change along with that. Some new scenes had to be created, a lot of new dialog had to be written, etc. and it became my responsibility to make that happen.

I just remembered that all the way back at GDC 2010, IGN writed up a lovely preview, In that preview they said this...
Vito soon heads out into the winter and makes his way home on foot. As B17s fly by overhead and the sounds of "Let It Snow" play softly in the background, Vito dodges the bustling winter traffic and starts to wonder just what kind of business Joe is in.
Let It Snow - Is a christmas song, So that means that christmas is in Mafia II? :D

but anyways i got another question but it might not be your area of expertise but i figure it's worth a shot to ask in here (since i need to get 100percent confirmation :) ) and that is...
the 'minimum system requirements' say 'Geforce 8600'. my graphics card is a Geforce 7900GT. but the thing is, doing a quick search on Google and the general consensus seems to be that my card is faster than a Geforce 8600GT but slightly slower than a Geforce 8600GTS. so i should be able to play the game then, right? ... or is there some sort of feature the game uses on the 8xxx series graphics cards that mine does not have.
Thanks for your time.

No offence but have you ever driven a 50's car? You cant compare damage models to say something like GTA IV, simply because cars back then were basically tanks. My grandad had a 1958 Austin A55. One time I backed it into a fire hydrant and there wasn't even one scratch!!
To be frank, if there was high damage it would be quite UN realistic.

Lol, you do realize there's no engine in the Bel-Air, making it look like it was penetrated further. It's total bull crap, and not a fair representation.
Cars in the 60s (Lets say the 1967 Mustang) It was made from all metal parts, which may give you whiplash if you were hit at high speed head on collision but most of the time you would be alive. Now a days they have "crumple zones" which are designed to give away and leave you with a guaranteed totaled car and less than a foot between you and the car that hit you.
So again, it would be very unrealistic for a 50's car, to have the same type of damage that a car today would have.

Yeah which is quite neat, because with Mafia you don't have a connective story, so as long as you have the Mafia theme you can make alot of games for the future. Personally I would love Mafia 3 to take place during the 60's and 70's. Awesome music back then....
Though a part of me hopes that the Mafia franchise will never go to the 21st Centurary, because that's what makes Mafia so special, the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, etc..you just don't see that in gaming.

I'm really not sure about Mafia in a more modern setting, I just can't see it working so well, there's just something about the eras of the first 2 games that fits with the classic mobsters image.
I know they were all just crims but the modern Mafia strikes me as a completely different animal, I would rather they went back to the 30's for the next game and revisit that, still so much potential.

OK, maybe that wasn't the right example. My point was that even that these cars are tougher than nowadays that doesn't mean that they should behave like tanks. From the latest video with the police car, the driver was flying with the car nearly 100mph, hit the wall with the roof and the car had only some scratches. You can't say that this is realistic.

Because they discovered that people who chose not to do them, really missed out on the backstory, and other certain aspects of the story. So the ones they did keep (that are important to the story, and not just there to be there) are mandatory.
yeah, but the they could still made unimportant missions optional, if they've already made them. I didn't think that optional mission shown at GDC really did bring that much story to the table, but it still was an awesome mission. I hope they still kept some missions for the awesome gameplay, not only for the story.

There is no way that they have cut out the " GamesCom 09' " mission, They made that mission way to public, It's like cutting out the Wild Ones mission, Also it appears that there is quite alot of backstory around that side mission, Cause it appears that Derek has a unethical competitor and trashing those cars will have to lead to some sort of retaliation in the game, Cause with every action there is a reaction, And I assume that mission will take a pivot on the storyline, Plus the voice acting and such was all performed, No way that they would have cut it, And the way that garage blew up was insane! That side mission was incredible, It would be a let down if it was cut out. Cause it's one of those missions that you will remember. But 2K Czech know what they are doing, I hope that all these " Cuts " don't ruin the game, Cause you can cut it up so much, That the story and gameplay suffers from it. On August the 24th, We will know. :)
