When first getting to Neptunes Bounty *poss spoiler*

I was really tired at 4 in the morning, but I had just used the gene bank in level 2. I remember Atlas saying something about heading towards Fontaine Fisheries, but there is that big mud field with the big daddy and the turrets. I don't know what is on the other side, but could I get any advice as to whether to go right and head to Fontaine or go the other way? Also, I asked this before but didn't really get a clear answer....where is the first place in the game where you can upgrade the number of plasmid slots? There didn't appear to be anywhere in level one...but where is it exactly?
