I know there a thread thats the opposite of this (land units attacking naval units), but I think its a lot more realistic to see a a frigate going up against some riflemen then to see a cannon going of against a frigate. The cannon would get destroyed in a heartbeat. Ships have often been used in support of ground troops, offering full batteries of cannons on a mobile platform. Gibraltar comes to mind.
Thoughts?

Agreed. As a New Orleans native, who has had a course recently that covered the Battle of New Orleans, ship bombardment from the river was vital there. D-Day is another example, as is most of the island invasions in the Pacific theater of WW2.

I think it would be awesome and provide more use for a navy which in III and IV seemed very underpowered.

There are coastal batteries all over the place. Cannons vs. ships is normal. I can't understand how you'd not see that being able to launch huge projectiles at incoming ships before they get close to land isn't 'realistic'?

Ya, but that's a shore battery. Not a cannon unit. And I think that since the devs have released that cities will be able to defend themselves, some sort of shore battery for defending against ships will be in place. If it bothers you, take out cannon and replace it with my riflemen example, a regiment of riflemen going up against a frigate would get slaughtered. That's what I what in place.

But cannons can bombard ships and ships can bombard land improvements (and units) in civ, i think it will be in civ 5 too. Not sure though.

by my reckoning a shore battery (cannon in fortifications) should automatically attack any hostile naval unit that sail/steams within range

I'm now thinking of the time the French cavalry defeated the Dutch fleet. (http://www.napoleon-series.org/military/battles/c_jonge.html)

There is a "coastal fortress" city building in earlier civs.

I think you're talking about something like the naval support from Revolution, right? If so, that seems like a great idea. Can't tell you how many time naval support saved me.
