View Full Version : Flanking as a tactical option

with the way the new combat system is set up, it seems like it would add to the tactical realism if there were a way to attack a unit from the flanks. maybe from one of the back two sides of the hexagon. it would require determining exactly which direction the unit is defending/attacking from. i'm a marine corps machinegunner so maybe i'm over complicating it, but if you could set the direction of your defense for fortified units and direction of attacks (i.e. 360 defense, one direction defense w/ percentage bonus from that direction, or full forward attack, protect flanks/rear attack with offensive and defensive penalties or bonuses), it would force you to group units into armies and keep your armies together to maximize strength or break into smaller groups that can manuever easier than a large strong one.

Flanking will probably be determined by a unit being surrounded on multiple sides (ie it is always "facing" one of its enemies)

Spyderman, we owe you a debt of gratitude; thank you for your service.

I agree wholeheartedly. Flanking should be taken into consideration, and be incorporated into gameplay mechanics, by all means.

and since archers fire bombardments with no real melee attack, am i the only one that would like to see a "suppressing fire" option? have a rifle unit "bombard" or "suppress" a unit a square away then a second rifle unit that is adjacent can make a "melee" attack to occupy the square. again, i realize this is complicated, but it would again add to tactical depth. like i said, this is coming from an infantryman that has always wanted more in-depth combat. i realize this is an all encompassing game set around running a civilization, not just being a general. at least bring back machinegunner units! they are the linch pin to any assault or defense. maybe i'm biased because i'm a machinegunner...
