The events in Bioshock take place in 1960. Rapture construction started in 1946 and was complete in 1951. Now I'll be generous and say that residents starting moving in half-way during the construction. That leaves roughly 1948-1960 - 12 years for the society to build up and then descend into civil war and chaos.

Does anyone find this a bit too rushed?

You'd have to assume it would take a few years to discover the secrets of ADAM. Then maybe a few more years to figure out how to mass produce and create the plasmid & gene tonic products. With this in mind we'd have to accept that ADAM was discovered fairly early in Rapture's history.

I dunno. To me, it would take 12 years just to get all the kinks worked out. Governing, infrastructure, commerce, etc. Then maybe 10 more years of "regular" living. Then another 10 years for the ADAM craze to truly become an epidemic. It wouldn't just happen overnight -- the mania would increase gradually.

I guess what I'm saying is, a more believable timeline would have the construction begun perhaps 10 to 15 years earlier -- in the mid 1930s. Either that, or move the game's events up to the 1970s. Rapture could still "look" like the 50s though because we could assume an independent society not influenced by trends on the surface.

Hmm... no discussion? Maybe everyone is on the Bioshock 2 board these days. I will repost there.

You seem to forget how Ryan was a extremely rich and very dedicated man who hired a very large amount of workers to build a city for the SMARTEST people in the world. With all these geniuses and laborers, many goals could easily be reached.

About the trend from decade to decade, Smugglers smuggled goodies from surface, so fashion designer continued in the surface way
