View Full Version : Update on the Status of the Bioshock Novel

Mr. Shirley gave me permission to post this, so here goes.

"The scoop is --and feel free to announce this at whatever website -- the Bioshock novel was a little delayed because they decided that BIOSHOCK 2's characters and data had to be incorporated. So I had to add another 30,000 words to make a long story short and in fact just turned the book in today!"

Sounds like the book is being made a bit beefier and is on track for release soon!

I can't wait to get this. I want something to make the whole story complete cohensive and explain gaps etc - if it does that. I mean, I really enjoyed reading the article on the Wikia site (http://bioshock.wikia.com/wiki/Storyline), but an actual novel will be awesome. I wonder from what point of view it is?

From the buzz I've read, its pre-civil war stuff, but I may be wrong on that count. The work that Mr. Shirley's been doing on it seems to be canon based, so its probably fair to say it takes place in the lore we already know.

Hey guys,

Here is basically what I know, the book covers the story of Rapture from it's creation to a certain point before the events of Bioshock 1. It promises to expand our knowledge of characters that we previously knew next to nothing about. The original title was going to be Bioshock: The Rise and Fall of the Ryan Empire. Then late last year I heard it was going to be Bioshock: Rapture. I am not sure if that is the final title though after recent edits.

Atlas Shrugged is definitely great literature to read when it comes to Bioshock and having understanding of its politics, all Bioshock fans should read Atlas Shrugged at some point. However, it is not completely vital that you do.

I wonder how the story is going to be laid out. Is there going to be some main character who we follow throughout the beginning of Rapture? Do we see the build-up of Rapture through their eyes? Will they be poor? Rich? Important? A nobody? Or will it be a general synopsis, with a large compitlation of different stories, telling the story of Rapture from many different eyes? Man, I really can't wait for this book to come out.:D

I sure hope this book is as revealing and entertaining as what Eric Nylund did for Master Chief in Halo: The Fall of Reach.

I was a huge fan of Halo. The Fall of Reach gave so much insight into how Master Chief became Master Chief. Why he wears that suit. His training as a Spartan. It made the games that followed it so much more entertaining.

I'm only referring to all of that because if this new book can do for Bioshock even half of what The Fall of Reach did for Halo...

... I am giddy! :D

I just hope it lives up to the Bioshock standard, its a franchise which I love dearly, bceause its so clever, with polictical ideals and lots of characters which I think are brilliantly fleshed out.

I just hope they handle it all with care and its not just a quick cash in book... fingers crossed!

From Play.com,

After barely surviving a plane crash, a man discovers an undersea city called Rapture, a failed utopia created by Jack Ryan :o , a man who looked to embrace a world surrounding the objectivist ideals of Ayn Rand. Power and greed have run amok and the city has succumbed to civil war and the only question is who really deserves to survive this maniacal debacle of science gone mad.

Don't know if this is a common fact, but they say its written by John Shirley AND Ken Levine!

Yerp, it probably won't be a while before release, but it's awesome to know that it's at least on its way ^.^

And I feel the same. I was really looking forward to it when I had thoguht it was just bs1 characters, but am having a few doubts about it now. Not because I don't like the bs2 characters, but moreso the fact that I'm still denying Lamb's existence in the Bioshock universe xD She just annoys the hell out of me. Still, can't wait to see what's in store...imagine how many questions will be answered!

Think that the info in it should be considered canon? O.o

I agree with you 150% on Lamb. Nails on a chalkboard... I tuned her out by the second hour of gameplay, haha. It's awesome to know it's on it's way and it's awesome that it's even being out out there. It'll be interesting to see where it goes. Maybe we'll all be pleasantly surprised. :)

Looks like it's bumped to January, 2011. Kind of what I had suspected. I had heard that Shirley was instructed to write another 30,000 words in order to incorporate BS2 lore into it. Must be why it got bumped to January.

Wazzamp!(Hey. :p)
Yes!!! That's the one who made that epic site. Is the site an affiliate of the Cult of Rapture yet?

I don't know, though I don't think so though hopefully it could be soon.

Yes, I meant "Ken".

I'm not missing the point. That's just messy organization by the website releasing the books. I've seen it like that on other books before.

Which is exactly the point i was making!!!

Leave the forums indeed???

You should, don't go all crazy when something goes out of order or gets messed up and your point wasn't given clearly.

Yeah, my bookshelf is getting heavy with all these textbook sized "novels."

Well, looks like it's been delayed. The Hastings by me only has the 2011 release date listed. Dammit

To be honest, it isn't coming until 2011. I've checked a lot of sites today, and they all say 2011

Dedication !!
I might not manage one sitting, but i'll definitely be reading it at every given opportunity.

The Book Depository have refunded my £5.99
Think i'll wait to pre-order again, maybe until there's an actual sleeve design :D
