Hey guys,
I've been thinking about this since Jordan Thomas stated that they were unsure about returning to Rapture if they were to develop Bioshock 3.
So, I decided to put some ideas down and came up with the following. Who knows? Perhaps if we collaborate we may be able to twist some arms, either that or we can dream now that SiTS has finished...
The year is 2028 (70 years after Bioshock 2), and the story begins at the end of the 3rd World War. It's not publically known who fired the first nuclear bomb, but it resulted in an all out nuclear war. Much of the world has now been reduced to a smoldering ruin, and most of the planets surface has been left uninhabitable due to radiation left in the wake of nuclear weapons. Radiation poisoning is aggressively killing off millions, and the only remaining habitable cities are under constant threat of attack from others seeking refuge on non-tainted soils.
The remains of one major Government decide, in secrecy, to fund a historical research group as a last ditch effort to find respite and a new beginning. There are several candidates brought to the table, including the rumored city of 'Rapture'- which in itself had an incomprehensible amount of information gathered from numerous sources, including the late Phil Isidore.
Phil Isidore was very well known... for being a 'kook'. This was due not only to the fact his employer for many years was the National UFO Society, but also his book which he wrote and attempted to publish as fact, titled "Meltzer's Quest for Rapture". He made several appearances on television and radio shows, in an attempt to convince the world about the 'truth'. He was commonly viewed as a raving lunatic, and was committed to Baltimore Psychiatric Facility in the late 90's suffering depression and severe anxiety. This was believed to be the result of constant public humiliation. Phil immediately requested a transfer to Tollevue Mental Hospital for unknown reasons. For his sanities sake, his request was granted.
Ironically, Phil's fictional book has become a glimmer of hope, and has assisted research groups in collating enough information to present to the Government officials. After much dispute, due to limited funding and resources, a decision is made. The aim: To locate the city of Rapture, hopefully in tact, and assess whether it presents a habitable alternative to the radiated soils of their homeland.
The research group, aided by military forces, are first guided to the rusty, scarred remains of a sea vessel- the S.S. Nellie Bly, wrecked against a rock. The Nellie holds several discoveries, including a few strange, near defunct devices found in a cabin. The cabin itself is riddled with bullet holes, smeared with blood stains several decades old.
Scientists and engineers attempt to decipher the devices, eventually resorting to disassembling a few, but defense mechanisms cause the contained information to be destroyed- except for one square metal box. Weeks pass, and efforts to decipher and decode are fruitless- until members of a secret organization approach the Government. The group call themselves the I.O.O.P. (International Organization Of The Pawns). They are mentioned in Isidore's book, and the research group don't hesitate to recruit them.
Once the 'Pawns' join the search, and aid the research group in the deciphering the riddles of the metal box, they quickly discover the coordinates for Rapture.
Eventually, they arrive in Rapture. The city is beaten, much of it flooded and deserted (yet still standing). Recovery operations immediately go underway in an attempt to restore Rapture to it's former glory, and civilians soon start arriving as areas are completed ready for residency. The main part of the city is renamed 'New Eden'.
During restorations, they soon discover the secrets behind Rapture, and Adam (from research materials, and the Gatherer's Gardens littered around the city). The military immediately step in, and put their greatest scientists to work. With no animals to test on, a scientist is ordered to test the substance on two soldiers, Sergeant Major Cain and Private Abel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abel), who have been diagnosed with severe radiation poisoning. The healing properties alone are enough to convince the government to devote all available resources to the research and development of the mysterious substance called 'Adam'. For safety protocol, the government orders research or development of any Plasmids or Eve forbidden- until the full effects have been realized.
(NB: In biblical readings, Cain and Abel are the first two sons of Adam and Eve. Cain roughly translates to "from the evil one" and is speculated to be the son of the serpent from the Garden of Eden).
Research materials show that Adam can be extracted from a certain sea slug, but after extensive searches of the ocean floor, any remnants of the slugs are long gone. As an alternative, vials of Adam from Gather's Gardens and strange syringe shapes vials from around the city are accumulated, and used to artificially recreate the substance. The artificial Adam is made available to all residents from small medical stations called the 'Tree of Life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_life)', as many of the residents suffer from radiation poisoning, war injuries or other illnesses. Shortly after, Cain begins to show signs of violence and irritability- and supernatural powers, such as telekinesis and the ability to control electrical devices. Abel then confronts Cain, who ignites Abel into a fireball in a fit of rage.
Sergeant Major Cain then flees east of New Eden, to an unexplored region called 'The Land of Nod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_of_Nod)'. The government consider Cain an exile, and barricade The Land of Nod sector. New Eden's scientists are immediately put to work, to try and find the source of Cain's superhuman powers, and discover something horrific.
The Adam which was collected from around the city of Rapture contained both Pure Adam (sourced from the Gatherer's Gardens), and Adam which seemed to contain blood and a genetic mutation (from the vials with a syringe attached). After further research, they discover the history of the 'Splicers', the 'Little Sisters' and their tasks in extracting Adam from the dead. They also derive that the Adam contains a 'genetic memory' from it's previous occupants. The genetic memory not only festers hallucinations of memories, but also Plasmids and abilities.
An even more worrying factor comes into play, when the scientists realize the artificial Adam they have created is based on Adam sourced from all over the city, and residents are now starting to report hallucinations, irritability and unusual abilities.
An antidote is developed, using 'purified' Adam from Gatherer's Garden machines, with the hope of programming the genetic code of the totipotent stem cells to overwrite the malicious cells causing the side effects in the people of New Eden. To distribute the antidote, a soldier by the name of Sergeant Seth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seth) volunteers. He is genetically engineered using the purified Adam, along with plasmids discovered (and new abilities).
His task is to distribute the cure to citizens, killing as few as possible, and to hunt down Cain. It is believed that Cain is responsible for the bodies of civilians found 'drained' around the city. It is also speculated that he is killing them to extract their Adam for strength, and to gain their 'abilities' and genetic memories to become more powerful and seek revenge.
(NB: Seth is the third son of Adam and Eve, and was considered to be a replacement son for Adam after Cain killed Abel. Seth roughly translates into "Ancestor of all the Generations of the righteous ones", and was said to have been given secret knowledge from Adam about the creator and the mortal/finite universe)
