View Full Version : SP Crash right after GFWL sign-in

I've went through 7 pages of threads with no luck of finding help on this issue.

The game runs fine when I don't log-in to GFWL, but if I log-in to my Live account or try to create a local account (which is what I want so I can save my game on my laptop), the game just crashes while trying to sign on, whether I have internet or not. It will play the game with no profile, but I can't save my game that way. I've downloaded the patch outside of GFWL, but that hasn't helped at all.

I've done uninstall/reinstall 3x, I've cleared out my temp folder, I've ran it under XP compatibility mode/administrator. None of this seems to help. Any idea's?

I'm running this on a Asus laptop:
Windows 7 64-bit Professional
Intel Core 2 duo P8700: 2.53 GHz
RAM: 6.00 GB
Nvidia Geforce GTX 260M Cuda: 1 GB

As I said before, this game was running fine without a profile from GFWL running, with all setting on high. Can someone tell me a way to create a local profile (Yes, I know how to create one) that will allow me to play the game without crashing this game every time I try signing in to it?

Why!?! I just tried reinstalling it without installing the update, created a new local profile, the #$%&@# thing crashed, AGAIN! It still works fine without a profile, but what's the point if I CAN'T save my game?

I'm thinking of returning this to the store and getting the PS3 version, this sucks. :(

It would help to know a bit more about the crash

After a crash immediately go to control panel>administrative tools>event viewer. Click on applications then double click the error appearing in the right panel. Copy the contents of the description box

I keep having the same problem as well, the game will work fine if i do not sign in to GFWL but it is impossible to save without doing so, even if i use an offline profile it still crashes, sometimes i get about 5 minutes of gameplay before it crashes however.

Still no luck on this one huh?
Crap, looks like we have to wait for another patch (one that fixes the problem) before we can play the game.
I give it a month,,,if the problem hasn't been solved then,,,i am turning my pc-version in for a ps3-version and NEVER EVER buy a games for windows live game again.
They just wrecked everything good about gaming,,,What the f*. isn't the meaning of a game to have a good time? I don't wanna do this and that, delete those files and there,,,before i can play a simple game. Fix it.*thinks about the good oll days when you didn't need to register for a game*

Heres what doesnt make sense, i played this the first day it came out until its completion, towards the end of the game i started having errors with "unable to locate save files".. so i had to play all the way through until i passed it because i couldnt save anymore. (this is with an offline account btw with GFWL). As soon as i made an online account to play multiplayer all these issues starting happening! It just doesnt make sense. Also, as soon as i download the GFWL update then run "verify steam application integrity" through Steam it says it has to download 73 files again. After that GFWL asks to update itself all over again! WTF!?!? Are both GFWL and Steam Conflicting with each other? Thats what it sounds like to me. Im giving up for today guys, i hope a fix comes sooner than later. By the way, SPOILER ALERT, save all the little sisters and everyone else, nice ending.

It's definitely GFWL causing this as I can play the game just fine if I'm not signed in.

I can sign in just fine but as soon as I click on anything, it crashes.

What version of GFWL live are you guys running?

Reason I ask is because I am running an older version of GFWL, v3.1.186.0. So it asks me to update GFWL when trying to update BS2, but as nothing is broke I haven't updated BS2 or GFWL - which got me thinking*, as I haven't encountered any crashes while playing SP or MP.

* I'm wondering whether it's the newer versions of GFWL causing these save errors and random crashes?

(You can find the version of GFWL by looking at the properies of GFWLClient.exe in Program Files / Program Files (x86) for 64bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE\Client)

My thoughts are that yes it is related to the newer version of gfwl, however...

WL would not allow me to play without updating to the newest version (which i did last night), and I was able to play for awhile last night, and again this morning. at some point in playing this morning, when i went to save a game, my save games list "could not be found". I quicksaved my progress (which i have no way of telling if it was actually saved) exited BS2, and now everytime i try to sign into WL, BS2 crashes. But i was able to play for a period of time, and save my progress, with the updated version.

confused.

My game was crashing when I tried to log in to GFWL and it was fixed by deleting the BioShock2 folder from My Documents.

If I remember correctly the crash happened because file(s)/folder(s) located in "My Documents/BioShock2" were set to read-only.

So I suggest checking if any of yours are set to read-only. Hope this helps.

You don't need to delete your Bioshock 2 folder just the currupt saves in it.
In your Bioshock saves folder in my documents just delete any saves with 1KB or 0KB as these are corrupt.

Trysta2000
02-14-2010, 09:39 AM
It doesn't help to delete a corrupted save file for those who don't have a file. I'm having the same issue as them and I don't have a file to delete cause there was no point in the game that I was even able to save. As soon as I download the game this issue came up. As far as I can tell, it's not a file issue, it's more of a windows live issue which we can not fix.

Some are reporting that restoring the original xp theme/skin if they have something different such as blinds has stopped it crashing.
Wouldn't know as i have Vista.
Mine started not responding after i had a few goes online. And the corrupt saves were the cause.

I was having a very similar issue. the only way i have sucessfully eliminated the issue is to disconnect from the net entirely and try playing it that way.

For me it seems to have problems connecting to GfWL only on direct x 10, direct x 9 mode is fine.

Absolutely no idea why this would be an issue, as i said in the previous thread i didn't think there would be a corrolation between direct x and signing into games for windows live but then im not a programmer hehe

Thread btw was http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=651837

While I was surfing another forum, I found a strange solution to my problem. It told me that if my local profile wasn't working right (ex. Crashing whenever I tried to log into GFWL), to go into my bioshock 2 folder in: Libraries>Documents>Bioshock2>SaveGames, and to delete all files and folders in that folder. So I closed out of Bioshock 2, deleted the files, then restarted the game, presto, the game logged into my local profile, and let me play & save my game, didn't even have to restart my laptop. I don't know if this will work for any of you guys, but I figured it might help to post what worked for me here.

Remember, this was for the LOCAL PROFILE save game option, I can't say it works for those of you that wanna us GFWL.

DaveLT19
02-15-2010, 10:18 AM
I actually seem to have fixed it...i went into my docs>BS2>savegames folder, and for some reason i had another folder with two files in it (one of which was 1.5x mb, and another that was 0.1mb) as well as two files in the main savegames folder which were <.5mb. I deleted the folder (not the main savegames folder), and the two smaller files (which had names very different from my other saved games files), and voila. no lockup after logging into WL.

I did lose a little progress, but it seems to be working so far.

Well, part of the problem with a Local profile for GFWL is that once you have a Net profile, you can't create ann oflline (I tried, believe me) Quite irritating.
I will try to do the delete save trick later today.
Oh by the way: issue is still the same. SP game scrashes as soon as GFWL logs in.

I've been playing without problems for 3 days with an offline profile (my PC is not connected to internet), but now I also have a crash at startup.

When the game starts, it automaticaly logs in with my offline profile, but when I select 'Single Player' on the next screen, it quits to the desktop!

After a few attempts, I manage to get in though. Then, after playing an hour or 2, the game starts to lag seriously and eventualy quits to the desktop again.

If I try to load my latest save game afterwards, it quits to the desktop again. BS2 a constant battle!

I'm running Vista and I had this exact issue immediately after patching (SP crash as GFWL logged in) and SOLVED it by simply removing the entire contents of C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Bioshock2\SaveGames

I made a backup of all the savegame files in the futile hope that someone official may one day solve what is no doubt a garden-variety savegame compatibility issue. Cheers to all the posters in this thread, your advice was very helpful :)

PS @ 2K: GFWL is by far the most abraisive, rude, and unwelcome program that has ever sleazed it's way onto my HDD. I am yet to speak to a single person who regards it as anything other than abhorrent, nor have I spoken to anyone who found it made their gameplay experience easier or more secure. The only CTD I have had with BS2 thus far has been directly due to this software. Money well spent fending off pirates, I guess...

If the fix I posted above didn't fix your problem, then it must be something else. After I deleted all that stuff, my offline profile logged in just fine, & I was able to play the game all the way through.

I'd check around, I found this solution on another website not related to 2K.

you need to delete both savegame folders ;)

I agree this looks really bad...on a lot of levels... dont know if I will ever buy A gfwl title again...Just gald I pre-ordered it so atleast I had more time to want to bash my head through a wall trying to actually luanch it, watch the openening scene and and mabey even play it a little.

Even though I built my own system as I am sure a lot of you have done also...I do not consider myself a "pro" by any means...But can someone explain to me how the pc version could have pos. been tested & released in this state with this many problems that make the game unplayable for so many people.

It just does not make any sense...Would it not have been better to hold back on the release date of the pc version ??????

But for some reason, today it deleted all my save-files and i can start a new,,,no actually i can't, cause it wont let me log in anymore

Oh 2K and GFWL i don't know which of you are the blame but seriously, you ****ed PC-gaming right up the a$$.
More money for console gaming right? i mean,,,its not that a console game costs more then a pc game right? oh wait,,,it is.
