This is a great video that 2K showed at GDS that in my opinion shows off the combat really well. It appears to be fairly realistic. I can't wait to try it for myself though. lol.:D
If you haven't seen the video yet I would recommend watching it.

Ok? just ok? it looks amazing.
it's super fluid, hopefully it's also responsive.
already looks way better than GTA IV's clunky glitchy fighting system.

It reminds me a lot with 50s Hollywood movies. The moves and the sound of it are very unique. Just like John Wayne when he hits his enemies on the western movie. Kapoww! :D

I like how the tie and the jacket move freely with every movement.

It's a shame that you can't kick people and stuff when they are on the floor..

It's awesome how you can use the enivorment around Vito like walls, or cars to help in the fight looks great :)

Woow, it looks really great! But I have to agree with brynje: you should be able to kick people when they're down.

i think you can kick people when they are down, i mean what game doesnt let you do that. but i know for sure you can kick them or knee them while they are about to get back up.

Hmm maybe.. It's just that in all the gameplay footage they are never doin anything when the opponent is on the ground. Don't think u can. But hope!

the combat looks really cool but some movements looks too fast in my opinion, and i wonder if you will be able to kick them when they are down or incouncious, that would be great

At around :38 seconds in the video, what's with the guy doing a "The Matrix" move to get back up to his feet? lol
ddennis90
11-08-2009, 04:29 PM
While a character in the Matrix movies may have done that, many martial artists and military personnel are able to do that. It is not in any way an unrealistic move for somebody to do (Well unless they showed "the fat man" doing that move lol).

In a earlier thread about the afa version I meantiond that the enemy seams to go in in some kind of none hitible state. more specified in the fight with the police man in that garage you si vito beet him so he falls and during the ` time` the police man is down vito dose an attack and then you see that the police man is not Hit of the puches

good observation but that also happens in gta 4 and you can kick them when they are down..besides i think that if its not included they should

Melee certainly does look fluid, can wait to beat the sh*t out of bystanders:D . In all seriousness though, this is a great fighting style that manages to be pretty realistic/street fighting ish. I liked what they said in the Game Informer coverage on it, that these guys arent kung fu masters or anything, theyre just guys who grew up fighting on the street.

The mele system looks great, but why is the mini map in the top right hand corner instead of the bottom.

What im trying to say is that in the gameplay from GDC the mini map was on the bottom but on the gameplay where they show of the mele system its at the top.

maybe it's an option?
melee system looks very very good, number of moves in the GDC footage was impressive.

You probably can, it's just that maybe the developer chose not to. When I play GTA IV, I choose not to, I just yell "GET UP!" at them. And the friends in my Xbox Live party point out I just yelled at a video game, AGAIN.
Boy, that gets embarassing.

Sorry to bring back this old thread but didnt the devs say that the fighting wouldn't be like a Hollywood action movie? Because in the video why the show the melee system around 35 seconds Vito punches a guy in a suit the guy falls to the ground on his back, then instead of rolling to his knees and getting up he he uses his hands and does the awesome jumping up thing and lands on his feet. To me it doesn't seem like a average joe could do that
And for the kicking someone why he is down, it looks like you can. The enemy was one his hands and knees and Vito kicked him right in the jaw. But it looked more like a "take down"

It looks like he grew up on the streets and learn to fight on the streets. That is good im glad he is not like Jet Lee and like kick everyones ass with like one punch in the heart

Alos i think he can fight people with different skill types. like one guy can be great at fighting and another cant fight to say his life lol.I think that woluld add to realism cause not everyone fights the same

I agree. That would be an interesting system to implement. I would like to see varied fighting styles (not too varied, after all, we can't have every single NPC in Empire Bay be completely unique) among the different characters in the game. It gets boring after a while when every melee encounter is the same. Either everyone is average, or everyone is a master fighter.

The only melee I remember was in the gameplay video where Vito fought with the police officer before he torched the garage. From what I saw, the fighting looked pretty realistic and not over done.

The link is in the original post -- god the fighting system looks amazing. In GTA 4 it was so rigid. Really cant wait to test it out.
I also like the idea of different skill types, say if your fighting a fatter wiseguy, he'll tend to be slower, and will take longer to stand up after he's been knocked down. If they've used the fat cop system, then this aint so far off;)

Vitto grew on the streets and served in the military for WWII, so it means that he's trained both in firearms operation and in melee fighting. I have to admit it, he's more skilled than Tommy, but one had to understand that Tommy was a cab driver and all in all he did pretty well. Niko Bellic was also a soldier that served in either the Belkan wars or the yugoslavian wars, but a yugo or serbian soldiers aren't as nearly as trained as a american or russian ones.

Yeah the only thing I liked about GTA's fighting system is the haymaker when you dodge and press the punch button "Triangle or Circle" he'll do a little move depending on which button you pressed

It looks like there are different fighting styles. between 0:45 and 0:52 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6XpJgqXd9c) you can see the guy with the hat fighting with fists and the guy without a hat fighting with open hands.
IMO i find the fighting system so good looking and realistic thet i think the ragdoll function is barely used and people will fall exactly the same all over again, i hope they wont..

Yeah, I'm not really a big fan of scripted deaths where they do the same three falls everytime. I noticed that alot in the gameplay videos where you shoot people in Mafia 2. It seemed like if you killed them with anything but the shotgun, they just fell in a pre-rendered pattern. Hopefully that was just a place holder and they introduce some type of rag doll physics that isn't too over the top. :p
