View Full Version : Would ADAM be around?

My question is: Would ADAM be around Rapture if Tenebaum didn't discover the slugs? I think no, atleast I hope no because I want to see Rapture as a normal city.
Well, technically she didn't discover the slug. The smuggler who got bit on the hand did. After that, he kept it (probably due to the unique look or even the possibility that he knew this was no ordinary slug). :p
But really, this is a question that can only be answered with theories/speculation. Either Rapture would never have ADAM if it weren't for Tenenbaum or she only hastened the inevitable (maybe someone else would've found the slug and discovered it's horrible properties?). Or maybe even if ADAM was never discovered, another invention/discovery would've brought Rapture to its knees?
Assuming the slug and ADAM were never, ever discovered then the city may've still fell because of Fontaine and his Smugglers. A bloody feud similar to the Civil War might've ensued. Or maybe his operation would've continued unnoticed until both he and and Ryan were dead? and Rapture would be calm and quiet? We can't know for sure...

yeah like you said that would be what would happen if the ADAM wasnt researched.
whith tennenbuam she just simply found a way to increase the production of ADAM. so yeah if tennenbuam never went to rapturethere would be less ADAM, no little sisters, no big daddies but rapture would still fall cause of fontaine.

I remember hearing Doctor.T in an Audio Diary that the slugs DID provide ADAM but not enough to be a reasonable amount.
It was the discovery the you can attach the slug to a host, which made the ADAM amounts soar.

I believe that even if 'the Kraut' wasn't there. ADAM is so addicting, that eventually the ones who have it would be attack by the ones who want it, resulting in the civil war (albeit at a later date)

Isn't ADAM the whole reason Rapture collapsed? Without it, it would be a relatively normal society. All the technology was in genetics, anyway, so it's not like they would've blown themselves up.

not intierly cause even without ADAM fontain would still try and take over rapture and so on with the civil war and rapture falling. Its just they wouldnt have ADAM as a big influence in the destruction of rapture

All societies have crime, though. Even if Fontaine DID take over, the population wouldn't have been murdered by insane splicers. You know, it's bad business to kill everyone you just took the trouble get control of. Without ADAM, it's quite possible the city would still be alive, even by the time we live in now.

I think you're right. If there was never any ADAM, the city might have lasted (sanely) up to present day. But I ALSO think that it would eventually fall the same way as all great nations have; greed, jealousy, and most importantly, THE FACT THAT THERE HUNDREDS OF FEET UNDER WATER!!! The pressure would cause the city to eventually collapse. BACK ON TOPIC, I actually believe someone would have found and utilized the slugs, and the adam someday with or without Dr. T's influence.

True, but continued, diligent maintenance would prolong the sea retaking Rapture. Not forever, though. I agree, though. Nothing, especially nations and empires, lasts forever.

Like i said to guartian of light. It wouldnt cause fontain is still there and his smugglers. Meaning they would still fight ryan. Also the pressure wouldnt destroy rapture cause the glass is thick beyond measures and ryan spent alots of money to make sure it doesnt break under pressure. Also Dr. T didnt really dicover ADAM she just found a way to mass produce it and but it in a hosts body. The real discoverers were the fishermen that work for fontaine. They got small amounts of ADAM from those slugs and so like i said the smugglers will still try and take over rapture.
Also it is possible that the city would survive (sanely) but there would still be non stop fighting with fontain and ryan. Meaning rapture would divide into to halves. Followers of ryan and smugglers of fontaine.

Technically it was a random smuggler who discovered the slugs.
Now to answer your question directly...maybe.
Rapture is the ultimate place for individual ingenuity and discovery, not only by its founders' intent but by simple necessity. It is fairly likely that somebody would have discovered the slugs - and the ADAM they contained - sooner or later. Exactly who discovered it and when would be anyone's guess...although I'd bet on smugglers. Their 'work' takes them on routes most Rapturians wouldn't think to venture, not unlike the 'mountain men' of old US history.
Assuming ADAM was completely undiscovered at the time of the player's entry to Rapture, the city would be much more 'normal' and 'civilized'...but I'm betting that a closer look and you'd see that Rapture wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

If you read my post above yours it says that wouldnt really happen with what you say as rapture being more normal and civilized. After all its fontaines fault that rapture fell and even without ADAM the weapons they had are still strong.
Talking about fontaine, it was fontaines fishermen who discovered ADAM in the first place so if Tennebuam never researched it and mass produced ADAM fontaine would have the only army of splicers in rapture would ultimately take controll of rapture without jacks help.

Rapture would then become the worlds best utopia with no problems and the original goal of rapture would be gained.
Or someone else starts the fisheries and then the fisherman discover the ADAM and then the whole story of BIOSHOCK would roll again but instead with someone else that has the same intend as Fontaine.
