View Full Version : What would you think about minigames in Rapture?

This actually came to mind as a joke reply to another thread. An image of a Adam slug game (to make them seem cartoony and harmless) popped into my head, but then I thought, "Why not?"

Ryan was all about forcing his beliefs on everyone through all manner of propaganda. Why not video games? Some aimed at children, and some at adults. They could have graphics or be basic text sims that reward "socially acceptable" answers.

I wouldn't want to see a whole arcade, but maybe one or two in a school, a few in a bar, that sort of thing.

Has this come up before?

That's actually a really cool idea. I would love to explore Rapture's great minds inventing videogames a couple decades earlier than was historically realized on our timeline. Space War was created in 1962 so it's definitely not unthinkable, technology-wise. It would be cool to see some Atari 2600 games or text-based games with an Rapturian or Objectivist twist.

-Edit, and since it is inevitable that this picture will get posted, here it is. :D

Hah. Yeah, I thought that retro Atari cover was a classic.

I guess I should clarify that the games wouldn't be cutesy or silly. While some would be aimed at kids, all would have a very creepy, very strong propaganda element to them. So it would be very clear what their overall objective is.

It could even be a great in-game puzzle. Maybe you are trapped somewhere and need to signal the bad guy so he will try to get you (thereby freeing you). Except there are no cameras or surveillance devices. You find one of these games and have to "fail", thereby setting off an alarm in the nerve center to go pick up a potential dissident. :D

System Shock, and System Shock 2 had mini games in them so it wouldn't surprise me if they add one or two.

It is a great idea. And I love that Atari cover.
Somehow video games seem like the kind of thing that Ryan would frown on. He seems like the type of guy who would view any video games as pointless mind-rot that he wouldn't want people messing with even if there was a slight chance of brainwashing attached.

While Ryan doesn't want to "brainwash" his people, I do believe he would not like Video Games. Although we were talking about Minigames and not Video games, like the one for Hacking in BioShock 1.

I, for one, loved the Pipe Dream minigame. I was great at it until it started surrounding the starting points with overloads. Although, I got that Skilled Hacker achievement, literally, within the first 2 levels of the game because I couldn't trust humans to keep me safe.

But I wouldn't mind a different game be substituted.

I don't know if there was another conversation going on, but I was talking about an in-game game. Like a video game that your avatar would play, not like the hacking game that the player plays. Plenty of games use them, and I think the potential for propaganda within such a game would be creepy and unique.

You can't be serious. An actual video game, not just something used to achieve a greater goal? japster! I've never known you to think in such a way! :(

How about the old idea: Working Jukebox!

I guess games like the mini-games in GTAIV would work if they fit the surroundings, i.e. playing tetris at the bottom of the atlantic doesn't fit too well.

I guess you're completely missing my comments about it being used for PROPAGANDA. We are surround by banners, radio announcements, posters, and a host of other things pushing Ryan's philosophy. Why not something interactive? It would be especially creepy if it was aimed at children. It's nothing more than an extension of the methods he used to program the Little Sisters.

If some people don't get it, I'm okay with that. I'm just kickin ideas around.

i like the idea and you made a very good point about andrew ryan, he would probably issue people to make propoganda for adam, and appealing to children would be a big one. i wouldnt find it weird to have a minigame here and there

I wouldnt mind minigames but they have to fit in bioshock...i really dont know how to phrase this better...i hope you get what i mean. It shouldnt just be there just cuz. I think it has to have some sort of purpose or add to the atmosphere/story or give you a sense of how it rapture was in its hayday. Kinda like the slot machines in fort frolic

That was for the Little Sisters, specifically, as part of their mental conditioning. And I think that one was a motherly figure, and one was a Big Daddy. Which is just 10 times more creepy than it being a splicer.

It was, sorta, a joke... But still a game for "children."

This just gave me an idea. Maybe you revisit Little Wonders Educational Facility in BioShock 2, and you'll see the Big Sister destroying the machine. She then notices you, and runs into her old room, locking the door. :D (Yes, I know those rooms are open top, just thinking...)

No, that's exactly what I mean. It's not like, "Rapture is boring, I wish I could play video poker or bowling inside the game to bread up the monotony." :p

I mean it as an atmospheric touch. Something that presented itself as benign (a small diversion for the everyday Rapturian) but was really sinister.

I think that it would take away from the actual game itself...thats just me though

Hm that would kinda be like the slot machine thing only a little more detailed, maybe have some here and there that have achievement value, i would enjoy that and im sure many BS2 fans would also.
