Just came to me out of no where, but who or what is in the Big Daddy suits?
A splicer or another human? Anyone know?

Big Daddies are human beings who have had their skin and organs grafted into an enormous diving suit. The candidates also go through voice box modulation and pheromone application. This pheromone is what attracts the Little Sisters to the Big Daddies. They are then injected with a plasmid that effectively turns them into mindless drones with only one purpose: to protect the Little Sisters.

The Big Daddy was the brainchild of Dr. Suchong. Knowing that the Little Sisters would be at great risk if they were out on the streets gathering ADAM with no protection, Suchong sought to rectify the problem. Suchong presented his idea to Andrew Ryan, but with trepidation. Knowing that becoming a Big Daddy would be a "one way street" Suchong was worried about finding candidates. Andrew Ryan assured him that this would be no problem.

Big Daddies are outfitted with the gear they were designed and programmed to wear. A log declares that Ryan was so cheap, he told the scientists to re-use the Big Daddy suits even though it was impossible to remove them, as the skin of the subject is removed so the suit can be directly steam-sealed onto the flesh. The organs of the subject are then directly grafted into the suit where needed, thus making it impossible to "re-use" the suits. Dr. Suchong commented that Ryan could "suck an egg" if he thought otherwise.

Using various plasmids, the humans inside the suits were outfitted with strength and agility, but with no humanity (or sanity) to lose. They're able to lift heavy weights with ease, seeing as their suits are made mostly of steel and various other machinery to keep them alive during their duties—and to resist pressure six miles beneath the ocean. Bouncers are subjected to far more splicing than the Rosies, and as such their heads have deformed to the point of grotesqueness, while Rosies wear a somewhat normal diver helmet.

Makes Bioshock 2 sound like a fantastic trip down suppressed memory lane.......urgh!
One that isn't mentioned much there is how Ryan got the bodies/victims for first lot of big daddies - they were all the separatist societies of Rapture.
There was an log somewhere in a secret area which states "Prisoners but no Prison" or something.

I get the feeling Ryan found "volunteers" among the ranks of his enemies, members of Atlas' gang that were caught, and from some of the folks sent to Apollo Square.

A question to Vitiis arent the Little Sisters invincble to a certain extent I mean I cant seem to kill one "before harvesting or rescuing them" and if so then there really is no need for the Big Daddies?

thats a really good question, im not sure but i think the little sisters are invincible with bullet shots but not physical attacks. i heard something like that from a audio dairy.

I'd assume big daddies are in the big daddy suits.

No, you can't harm the little sisters. I remember reading an interview that talks about it but I can't remember why exactly.

Found it:

You have talked a lot about the choice to either Harvest or Rescue the Little Sisters, but from your description are you concerned about allowing a player to Harvest, and thusly harm, a Little Sister? Do you think that’s appropriate for a video game?

...Now, I think we have a responsibility to do it tastefully, to not exploit the elements of the moral choice that don’t matter. For example, in BioShock, you cannot harm the little Sister in any way… you cannot use your weapons against a Little sister, or set her on fire, or send your swarm of insects after her like you can the other AIs in the world. All we allow the players to do is to make the moral choice of harvesting the Adam from them, a process they will not survive, that’s true, or to save them, to turn them back into what appears to be normal little children. And that choice is not graphically shown in any way. It is really sort of suggested. It just shows the player enough so they know the consequences on his choice. We went back and forth a lot on this choice to make sure we were handling it with the respect and seriousness necessary for a game that takes on these issues.

I've always wondered if the people in the bd suits were willing volunteers or like just people they kidnapped to do it or like criminals..
Cause I can't think of anyone that would want to have something permantly grafted to their entire body, organs and all, like that. and turn into a mindless drone afterwards.

You can effectively kill them by removing the slug implanted in their stomach. Whether by force, or by the plasmid (tonic?) that Tannenbaum gives Jack, that is how they would be unsafe on the streets alone. People knew their weakness.

Exactly. And look at Welcome to Rapture when poor old LS is just minding her own business, sucking the ADAM out of an angels head, and a splicer tries to creep up on her obviously trying to harvest her. If Big Daddy hadn't of been there she would just be a slugless mess. So BD are definitely a neccessity.

I read on Wikipedia.org that Big Daddies are people who have become so spliced up that they have had their skin and organs ripped off and the Big Daddy suit was put on them for replacement.

Wikipedia is wrong. They were, *ahem*, "volunteers" for a program run by Suchong, funded by Fontaine. Basically, Suchong had them undergo an operation where their skin was removed, flesh was steam sealed into the Big Daddy suits, and the organs grafted on as well. Then, they were injected with plasmids to make them zombies, with the singular purpose of defending the little sisters.

I find it somewhat amusing that Fontaine, the gangster bad guy, origionally just had the little sisters in his Little Wonders orphanage and fed them lots of food so they would regurgitate ADAM to use (I'm not sure if he kidnapped them either, maybe his orphanage actually did take in young girls who were either left there by their parents or didn't have a home to go to... though how their parents died could be suspicious).

It wasn't until Ryan took over Fontaine Futuristics and started splicing the hell out of his troops that the need for ADAM skyrocketed to the point that they needed the Little Sisters to suck ADAM out of corpses to recycle it (and kidnap them from their parents). And even then, couldn't he have just kept the Little Sisters secure in whatever place they were at and just brought corpses to them... no, his solution was to have little girls with a fortune in expensive genetic modification wandering barefoot through the halls of a nightmarish warzone with a brainwashed and also expensive mutant monster golem thing lumbering after her to smash people with its misshapen fists.

Ryan: Dr. Suchong! These big daddies are too expensive! We should be reusing the mangled shreds of equipment found in the exploded corpses of the fallen Daddies to build the new ones. Because obviously anything capable of killing a Big Daddy would leave most of its parts in working condition, right? Right?

Dr. Suchong: Mr. Ryan, with all due respect what you are asking is neither physically possible, practical, or even sane. Why don't you just put up big automated drop boxes around the place that give people money when they dump corpses into them? We have vending machines that sell high explosives and napalm... its not like a really cheap-ass funeral service is going to raise any eyebrows around here.

Ryan: Hmmm... would these corpse-boxes result in the complete ruination of everyones thoughts and dreams?

Dr. Suchong: Well... it might inspire a few people to murder friends and family for fabulous cash prizes... but other than that I don't see it hurting your public image much. Considering the only people who like you are either certifiably insane or being brainwashed with the creepy pheromones you keep pumping into the cities air supply... and you already ordered them to defile their bodies in unspeakable ways to become spliced-up insane monsters... I honestly doubt a drop-off funeral service in public places could damage anyones soul at all nowadays.

Ryan: Well in that case, NO! I want this Big Daddy project running at double efficiency now... and give the monsters some kind of guns and proximity mines while you're at it. I suppose I can make up the difference by cutting out the 'Shoes and basic necessities' budget from the Little Sister project. I mean these girls get plenty of corpse-juice in their diet, what do they need food for?

he has a point, why didn't the little sisters just stay where ever the vents leaded to and the big daddys job was to fetch the corpses or even create them ( killing splicers) and basically dropping them down the vents so that the little girls can harvest them without putting thereselves in danger.

Or even better, sell Little Sister conversion to parents.

"In these troubled times, don't you want the best for your child? Are you worried that they might get hurt or injured?

Come down to the Little Wonders Orphanage and let your little girl become one of the Little Sister that keeps the wheels of Rapture turning! After just a few quick and easy operations your little girl will be able to produce ADAM forever!

Any injuries she gets will heal like magic!
She can produce valuable ADAM just by eating!

So come on down to Fontaine Futuristics and for just $500 you can give your daughter the future she deserves (check with us for our affordable payment plans). Be sure to sell the ADAM to us for processing.

If you don't have a daughter, then be sure to check our orphanage and give one of these little wonders the loving home she deserves. A happy Little Sister is a productive Little Sister!"

then once the war starts:

"Dear Parents of Little Sister:

As you may have noticed, the halls of Rapture have become very dangerous lately and ADAM is in extremely high demand. In order to deal with this shortage it may become necessary to 'recycle' ADAM from fallen splicers to bring it back into the system.

This has resulted in our new product Angel Juice, which we have carefully extracted from fallen splicers. By ingesting it, your Little Sister will be able to reclaim the lost ADAM and produce ADAM in quantities much higher than before! It is not recommended for regular people to consume Angel Juice.

As always, we wish to work alongside you in this to help bring prosperity to Rapture and all it inhabitants!

Notes:

Also due to the high demand of ADAM, there are some unsavory individuals who may wish to take your Little Sister away from you or worse yet harm her to collect the ADAM from her. We have specially secure facilities where you and your little girl may be safe and secure.

In cooperation with Failsafe Armored Escorts, we have been researching ways to produce strong and caring guardians to keep Little Sisters safe from attack. If you are interested in this, feel free to stop by and let us schedule a tour!

If you are interested in the production of Angel Juice, stop by and take a free one-hour course to see how it works. Angel Juice Extraction Tools are available for sale.

Finally, if you see any fallen splicers, please contact us so that we can have them disposed of properly."

So yeah, I'm not sure exactly how this would stack up against actual Objectivist beliefs, but Andrew Ryan was really being pretty needlessly evil when he cooked up the Little Sister thing. Why spend good money to make monsters when you can get other people to pay you for the privilege? I mean, Rapture was full of people paying for plasmids, how many of them would jump at the opportunity to turn their little girls into walking gold mines? If you get the parents to send the ADAM to you for 'processing' you can skim a little off the top if you're cheap. If ADAM actually turns into a currency then you don't even have to buy it from them with money!

Plus, why pay to make Big Daddies when the girls real Daddy would probably be even MORE hellbent on protecting his little girl then a big golem ever would? Parents pay to get the Little Sister made up, they feed her so she produces ADAM, they send you the ADAM for processing and you send a reasonable portion of it back to them, and the father would probably willingly splice and arm himself into a giant who would rip Spider Splicers limb from limb if they ever tried to lay a finger on his family.

But then again... if they did this the smart way then the game would be quite different.

I'm sure they were no where NEAR that straightforward with the parents about their plans.

Hm. Where in the game does it say the Big Daddy's skin was removed, anyways?

The closest thing I can find in the Audio Diaries is this: "Take a man, graft skin and organs straight into suit, otherwise suit not work."

Which implies that the skin is still there.
