View Full Version : BioShock now $4.99 on Steam
There is a great holiday sale (http://store.steampowered.com/holidaysale) going on over at the Steam store, with all titles going for 10% to 75% off until January 2nd.
BioShock is now $4.99 (similarly priced for the rest of the world). This a great opportunity to grab it if you don't already own it, or maybe you have the console version already but want to experience it on a new PC, or have a friend who you've been nagging to try it already (better yet, gift it to them! Steam allows you to buy games for other people).

Be careful.. there's another post by someone else saying "It only cost 5.00, but it doesn't work..' (And to make it even more confusing, there's another post entittled "2k, why did you take your game off stream?') Somehow, those 2 would make me feel a little uneasy about spenting money on a cheap deal as such..

It's the same version Steam has always offered. They just reduced the price :)

Why would Steam rip you off?
This is a deal not to be missed.

I bought it, and it works fine. There is no reason to believe that either Valve or 2K would offer fraudulent deals to customers. Steam is well known for offering titles at extremely low prices.

AWESOME deal. Anyone who hasn't got a PC/laptop that can run BioShock, BUY IT. Save it for future generations. It's better to buy it now for $5 and keep it until upgrading your rig than thinking "Darn, now I have a good PC, I wish I had BioShock for 5 dollars"...

I bought this game today on Steam and it has serious mouse problems that make the game basically unplayable. I can play Half Life 2 and its add ons at the highest graphical settings. I would advice anyone else thinking about buying the game to be very careful. Its basically like a non refundable $5 donation to 2K.

I bought this last night from steam (even though I already had the original version). It works perfectly, no issues noted. It even found my saved games just fine. I basically bought it so I can run it without needing the Disc in drive to play it. Plus If my disc does go bad, I won't need to replace it.

This thread really helped make the game playable. Sadly, only on low graphical setting, but playable. So, for $5 its worth the hastle.

The game is great and all but replay value is very low I was dissapointed. Hopefully Bioshock 2 will fix this.

I see that quite a few folks posted that their mouse problems were solved or that they found their own fixes. Did you try any of them?
If you are having trouble finding the more useful posts, skip over the handful of people that seem to have posted every other reply. They are usually repeating themselves and not offering anything of value in that thread.

I feel the exact opposite Bioshock is one of the few games I have actually played more than once.

That's cool. The problem though is that it doesn't offer anything new except perhaps some more emergent game play. At least for me. What I would like to see in the sequel is different enemies unlocked as you beat it more than once. Special elite enemies perhaps like Diablo 2. I'm sure they can come up with many cool things to make me want to play the game again :). (Speaking of Bioshock 2)

I just bought the game from Steam and started playing it today, and I am hooked! My best 5€ (yeah, Steam is still ripping us europeans of with their 1$ = 1€ policy, but 5€ is still a great bargain) bang for the buck ever. :)

So you haven't played it before? Well welcome to Rapture. Enjoy your stay. Make sure to fix any leaking pipes with your wrench. Careful with the brandy as it can go to your head.
Don't forget to wrap your hands with bandages as they'll be taking a beating. Also don't stop moving when you first encounter your mini boss. (Big daddies) Keep your head down and your health/adam up. Get ready for the ride of your life! :)

I'm just wondering if there's anything in the retail version like a manual or map that i'd be missing if i buy through steam.

I am very prejudiced against downloads vs hard copies of games. I just like having a disk. And I enjoy reading a good manual or map. I can say, however, that I never again referred to the BioShock manual after reading it once. The game interface is simple and elegant, and the in-game help will lay out the basic buttons (there aren't many). And there are no maps or other aids, as far as I can recall. So this should be a safe purchase for you.

I wish I could buy BioShock on Steam, but unfortunately 2K Games do not sell their products on Steam in Israel :(.

You can download the pdf version of the manual from the BioShock's Steam page (http://store.steampowered.com/app/7670/), down on the right.

BIG THANKS to the vrap for starting this thread! I was tempted by Grid Defense, but what finally put me over the edge was X-COM: Ufo Defense! Woot!!! One of my favorite games of all time, and now I can play it on my current PC?! Awesomeness.
I decided to register for Steam.....and found out I already an account. D'oh. :o I got a free code last year for a few small games that I redeemed but never installed the games. Ha.
Thanks again for mentioning the sale. :D

Yeah, the whole collection (5 or 6 games) for $11 or just UFO Defense for $3! I installed UFO just to see if it would work, and the sound and video for the intro worked perfectly (my original copy had sound issues with XP). I'm assuming it will run okay but haven't tested the whole game yet. I can't believe this game is available and for so cheap!
Now if only they had Fallout 1 and 2..... ;)

Oh snap! That's awesome! I haven't played X-COM for a very long time (6-7 years). I remember that it was one of the first games in my life that I truly understood and got into. Now I have to go and find someone with a credit card (unless Steam accepts money orders!) :)
Now if only they had Fallout 1 and 2..... ;)
Fortunately I still have the originals on CD and they work fine on XP for me.
