View Full Version : Problem installing BtS

Ok, can't find any record of this problem around, so I thought I'd ask:
I've had Civ IV and Warlords installed since forever. I bought BtS yesterday, and tried to install - first time through, it did the DirectX updating bit, then moved onto patching the original game, and maybe the step after that; I can't recall. I was doing some other stuff on the PC at the time (not the best of ideas, ok), and it seemed to hang at some point, so I manually ended it and tried to install again. This time, however, and every time since, it has got to DirectX update part, done that, and then just ended. No error code, no message, nothing installed, it just dies completely and without warning.
I have tried everything I can think of - updated drivers, updated directx manually, deleted temp files, rebooted a lot, uninstalled and reinstalled Civ IV and Warlords, patched them up fully, but to no avail.
My machine is a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop, 1.73GHz Intel, 1GB RAM, Radeon Mobility X300 (128mb).

This may sound like a dumb suggestion, but have you let it sit at the point where it "ends" to verify it's not just taking awhile to finish? Verified the process is no longer running in the task manager?
If all else fails, I would suggest going into the registry editor(start menu - run - "regedit") and looking for all entries containing Civilization IV(should be listed under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Firaxis Games ->), and make sure you've deleted all of the registry entries that may be leftover after uninstalling each of the Civ products. Obviously you need to be careful in the registry and only delete items that you're sure are related to Civ.
Editing the registry should be your last resort, but after uninstalling all of the applications there may be some leftover registry entries that could hamper your installation.

Well, like I say, the first time it hung for ages, and thats when I used End Process - since then, after the directx bit it actually kills EVERYTHING by itself, no civ related process is running at that point.
I already looked for the registry entries pertaining to BtS, making the assumption that windows thought it was already installed from the previous effort. There are none. My guess is it didnt get that far. Tbh, I have no idea whats preventing it from going further now.

Quick question. Are any of the games Direct2Drive or Steam purchases?

Nope, all the games are boxed copies from shops.

Same problem as the first bloke, BTS does a latest DX9 check, can hear the HD as it checks, then that screen crashes/disappears. It's done it plenty of times.
And I've done all that he's done as well with un-installing reinstalling etc. Vanilla CIV patched to 1.74.
Specs are all fine. Windows XP Pro SP1
Any word on a fix or work around?

2K support sent me an email with a fix for this problem that worked a treat. If anybody wants it just leave your email and I'll pass it on.

But, yeah if some one could post the solution here on the thread, message me, or email me... that would be great.
Bought all three seperately at same time as new PC. Installed Civ IV, then Warlords, then attempted to install BTS. Initially an error was returned that it couldn't find something in a C: subdirectory of the Warlords files.
Tried again some time later and now it just quits as described above, no error, nothing. I ran it again with task manager open (Windows Vista Home Premium, btw) to confirm. Yep. Just quits after direct X.
I tried unistalling Warlords with no improvement or change in my results.

And now I've tried copying the contents of both disks to the hard drive and installing from there.
Seems to work, says it has installed successfully, and there is no sign of it when game is run from either CivIV disk one or Warlord disc.
Anyone?

Thought I would contact support.

The link on that page is dead.
Could someone in the player community help me out here since 2k clearly doesn't want to?
Please?
