I wanted to know what people think about what really happened there. What do you think that machine with the screens with pics of BD and a lady did.

I don't know, but if I press the BD one, I get a bag of chips, If I press the lady one, I get shocked. If I press the BD again, I get chips. But you only get chips after you've been shocked. Not sure what it is though. Is this what you're talking about?

I think it is to teach them that they should listen/go with the big daddy and view it as their guardian instead of the lady (probably meaning their mother).

Ahhh that could be a possibility. Kinda like teaching a dog a trick? If you do it right, you get a treat.

That is the one and that is a great idea. Don't know why I didn't think of it.

Ok, that is probably settled. Then how about some other things in there?

This little room actually struck me as genius, as did the rest of the game, but this room in particular.
It's obvious the developers know their psychology.
I'm about 100 percent sure the machine in question is an example of Operant conditioning, which increases the occurrence of a certain response by using either positive or negative reinforcement, as well as decreasing the occurrence of other responses through punishment.
In this instance, choosing the Big Daddy was reinforced with food, which as anyone in Rapture knows, is a good health boost without using up health packs if you're running low and aren't in danger of dying.
In the instance of the electric shock, this appears to be punishment for choosing the motherly-type figure, as to reduce the number of responses and thus condition the child to prefer the Big Daddy.
I love Psychology. xD
Sorry if this was long-winded, I just... I just love it.

As for the rest of the things-- such as all the posters around, "All Good Girls Gather", "Angel"?
It's just propaganda. In other words, advertising.
The more you see something, the more familiar it becomes.
That's why after you see a commercial about these really good-looking chocolate-chip cookies or whatever, you feel hungry and want a cookie.

Or if you see a commercial for a game and then go out and buy that game because it looked like SO much fun on the tv.

Same principle.

And don't forget, children learn by imitation.

And they also needed to keep the people calm to avoid a revolution

Why "Angel" though. I sound like I don't know anything with all these questions. I have my own ideas, but I wanted to hear others opinions.

They probably use "Angel" to make the girls feel better about what they're doing.

the term "angel" is used as an eufemism (did i spell it right?), to not say "dead person"
just after you take electrobolt plasmid and falls, the LS comes and refers to jack as angel, untile she realises jack is still breathing

It's actually spelled euphemism. But yeah, I totally agree with you. :)

This is a guess but...children have a sense of right and wrong too. So if the little sisters were being trained to harvest ADAM, then they would think it was wrong, because they are kinda hurting another human. However by classifying the object to be harvested as angels, they wouldn't feel this guilt anymore. So then it would be alright to harvest.

And all good girls gather is pretty self explainitory, you see it as a little sister, and its like a thing you learn you must do.

They are reconditioned so that "gathering" is what they need to do to be good little girls. Their parental figure, whom they go to for comfort or security, has become a Big Daddy instead of a mother and father. Mr B, and "angels" put a happy face on such a terrible existance they were created for.

It got the emotions of everyone who played it... and if not that, those who were emotionally adept enough to detach themselves had to applaud them for how they had it written. I don't think any game has come closer to horrifying you, or making you question your morality.

It does make you wonder if that could happen in real life. Given the right circumstances, I think it could. I am starting to think I put too specific a name on this thread.

Oh, without a doubt.
This sort of thing's happened already in history, numerous times.
Just look up brainwashing, any evidence is more or less evidence of the same thing. Now, of course, no one's conditioned children to harvest ADAM from dead bodies, but... they have been conditioned to hate, to kill... it's not beyond imagination.

Every one of us has been conditioned in some way, in retrospect.

I'm an aspiring psychologist. I can tell you're at least interested xP

PM me sometime.
