View Full Version : Bioshock Multiplayer possibilities

Hey all, welcome to my first ever topic on the 2K forums.
First of all, do not get me wrong; I am 100% behind Irrational and their decisions with Bioshock. The option to keep it souley single player struck me though. I did alot of thinking on the possibilities, especially after the recent "Fisheries" video was released. How awesome would it be to have a certain number of players under deathmatch rules inside that sort of setting while using the different Plasmids to fight?
Awesome much? I could easily see myself sneaking up behind somebody and freezing them with the Frost Plasmid and giving them a couple of smacks with the Wrench while they cry into the Headset (X360). Simply Classic:cool:
It is a shame though that Irrational have opted to ignore this possibility, but for now we can only hope and pray they adopt such an idea and make it downloadable content in the future perhaps? Seriously, considering what we've seen so far, it would be the height of hectic awesomeness :) and I believe Irrational should seriously consider this for the future. Maybe about half a year after Bioshocks release.

I guess it might be cool using plasmids against other players, but I dunno the gameplay looks like its glory would have to be single player only. Have you played The Darkness? The single player's gameplay was very innovative and new, but the multiplayer lacked basically everything the single player had to offer. What i'm saying is, having a specified power (Darkness powers, The Darkness) (Plasmids, BioShock) would make the multiplayer very hectic, imagine playing against yourself on BioShock, now imagine playing against yourself times 8. I don't think it would work out at all.
Games like BioShock and The Darkness are better off without multiplayer.

How the hell do you sneak up on someone in an FPS? its almost impossible given that they constantly turn around to check.
plus like everyone else has said ill bet that irrational considered options for MP for ages and found that it just didnt work for various reasons, maybe the plasmids would break it, maybe one would be better that other period and others would be ignored.
The weakest element in MP will always be the players, the sheer amount of stupid idiot and sometimes downright sick people on MP these days is staggering.

Agreed although the idea of teaming up with other people and each has a few plasmids/weapons so you have to work together to survive and get past puzzles/enemies sounds awesome.

I'm not dissappointed or upset that theres no multiplayer, but frankly, I disaggree with everyone who says that none is better then crappy. Even if it is crappy, if the team has the time to just throw it in, just to say they have it, I think thats great, because its not going to harm their main focus, and even if it is crap, its still something to do to add at least an hour of more playtime. Again, thats only if its not going to hinder then main story driven game, which, darkness is a great example. It certainly isn't going to hurt that game to throw multiplayer on there so that people have something else to do with their product after they beat the game a few times.
Now, that said. I am kind of upset at the lack of Co-Op, because I don't see how that could have harmed the story or gameplay. I mean, I really don't think saying that there were two survivors instead of one, really changes anything. The only thing I think that would cause an issue there, is balance. I think it would make the game signifigantly easier when their are two times as...wait...no. I was going to say that having two players would make it easier because its two times the firepower, and more distractions for enemies and whatnot...but, the fact that it would halve the number of resources for each player, I think would kind of balance it out. You would be half as powerful. You would have to work together.
I wouldn't mind waiting a bit longer if it meant IG took the time to add the code to allow 2 players to connect. I just can't see any negative to it other then the time it would take to add the code.
Sorry for the long post.

Another reason that tacked on crappy multiplayer is beneficial, is the fact that it allows developers to see how players play the game, see what does and doesn't work, and refine and improve in a sequel, to make the next multiplayer work...if that makes sense.
Sorry for the DP, damn missing edit button.

Yep, Ken Levine said that it was just months ago that he finally figured out how he would make MP for BioShock work. I believe him and am fine with waiting until the sequel if there is one. In the meantime, I am glad he is not spreading himself so thin that the single player is compromised.

Co-Op would change everything. One of humanities greatest fears is being alone. In Rapture you travel by yourself. You are basically alone. You don't have people running along with you to offer you help and support. Its a game about surviving and what YOU would personally do if you were lost in that place. It also seems like you are the only other person on the plane besides the pilot. Adding a second player would damage the games atmosphere.

which is the reason why I'm actually bothering with this game
of course, at the advent of BioShock 2 I won't give a sh!t about what Irratinal does with the game I'll just be so addicted I'll like it whatever the turn out... sorta like those bungie kids
lol
but yeah, I sorta didn't really mean that last bit, I said BioShock 2 will work out with multiplayer is because of new found experience by Irrational to make it work

I completely disagree. Irrational made SS2 COOP out of a game with the same principles you outlined, and it turned out to be a welcome addition. Simply because the initial story (to which we only have a rudimentary understanding at this point) appears for all purposes to have a theme of one man vs. the forces of genetic upheaval, it does not mean that Irrational couldn't modify the game's narrative progression to allow up to 4 individuals to combat ever increasingly scaled forces.
It certainly would be tricky, and I don't know how they'd get around the whole LS saving/harvesting reputation when multiple people could make different choices, but I don't see Bioshocks primary focus being a lone survivor tale that could have been set anywhere. Therefore I don't see why anyone should write-off the possibility of COOP so quickly, and he atmosphere can easily be maintained, as the antagonistic forces should still be overwhelming enough to negate any security blanket felt when three more players are there to help.

Balance wise, It wouldn't make the game SUPER easy. The little sisters stuff would have to be split. And If i understand you right, the issue would be how do you give one player one ending for saving little sisters, and the other player a different ending for harvesting them...
Well, theres 21 LS, which ever one gets harvested or freed more, would determine the ending.
I think that it might change your mentality. But I don't think it would ruin the game, or the experiance. It might change the atmostphere. But you could always play the game over, by yourself. I still think that it would make the game better.

Right now it's all about getting the game out the door. They could put resources on the multiplayer design but it would take away from the rest of development.
I'm OK with no multi-player (for now), no demo, and no large banners that say "Quality."

Ya thats what i was going to say. I really dont car if multiplayers an option because i would rather play 30 hour game then a 5 hour game that i can really beat in 3. multiplayer is just a bonus and instead of multiplayer we get the best single-player known to man kind.

By all means I concur, I wouldn't have them try anything but pure single-player quality control until a few months after release (post-release support like SDK & patches should also come before COOP development)
Same thing happened with the beloved SS2 COOP. I don't remember the exact gap, but it musta been at least several months after SS2 release. COOP is a great way to extend the life of a game when it reaches the point of shelving, given IG has the time and money to put into it :)

One thing I don't get? Why do a lot of kids want multiplayer, when all they're gonna do, when they finally do get it, is whine about getting a patch, or asking for weapon to be nerfed, or beefed up. I won't let it happen! Don't believe me? Go to the Gears forums. All they're whining about is getting the Lancer (That's an AR, to you'se outsiders) nerfed because Epic finally released a patch to maker it stronger, in turn making the online MP a stop-n-pop, like it was designed to be. No more shotty rushers for me.
Honestly, some people need to learn which games just aren't the MP type. I mean, I see posts all the time about Mass Effect MP, and I always say to myself, "How in the hell would they do that".
Co-op on the other hand, is a good idea, as you actually need friends to play with, which made Crackdown, much much more enjoyable than single-player.

I wouldn't mind a Dual mode in rapture. Some of the best most tense moments of mp ive played were with only 1 other person.

Pardon my ignorance, but this SS2 CoOp... how'd it work? You and a friend connect to a server online (or connect to a server that one of you hosts?) and play together?

Yeah the same as any other incarnation of COOP. Connection works the same as standard multiplayer gametypes.
Guys, quit it with the vulgar examples of online chatter.

IRRATIONAL TEAM!!! a co-op would be pretty nice, thank you. Think of the possibilities you could have with a friend:eek: !!!
Oh and for gears of war, my tag is Espiroth. I will get Live when my semester starts. See you guys on the battlefield.

They could do what prey did release a steller single player then later release a multiplayer to download

Prey CAME with a multiplayer component, and a rather shoddy one at that. That's why I want Irrational to wait until after Bioshocks release so they can FOCUS on the multiplayer and obviously (seeing it is Irrational were talking about here) make it kickass

Yeah, It will be better for the second one to have multiplayer :)
