Vertical sync

when i first installed bioshock, and played the game, i changed my res to full and it instantly put the apply and stuff buttons below my screen, whats up with that? i can barely click it and when i figured that it was vertical sync, i turned it off and it was fine. what does vertical sync do? just wonderin

i got a 20 inch widescreen

Long story short, it will limit your framerate to your monitor's refresh rate.
