I do not mean to be a jerk, but that sentence does not make any sense. Are you looking for story or for gameplay? Luckily Half Life (all of them) have them both. Episode 2 is awesome and the whole series is historic.
Buying the Orange Box is a smart move regardless due to all the games that come with the purchase. Portal is great, TF is not my thing.

You are not being a Jerk, I only asked the question because I was looking forward to Halo 3 for pc (may have to wait for that one) and went out an bought Halo:Combat Evolved as other forums were saying that Halo 3 has a very good ending and tyes up loose ends on the storyline I believe and do not like playing, wathcing or reading anything of the like 2nd or even 3rd instalment in I feel as if I am missing something
I hope that this explaination clears things up

my apologies am typing this in work and am getting interupted is quiet now
What I was trying to explain was that from a stroyline point of view would I be missing out if I started playing HL2 I am not bothered from a gameplay angle, this rarely bothers me (eg, the mouse acc prob in BS)

Well if you like story lines, Half Life cannot be beat. I do not get the fascination with Halo. But that is just me.

To answer your original question:
You can play half-life 2 without having played half life 1, but had you played half life 1 you will understand the character references and well major ideas like "where did i come from", "why do these vortigants refer to me as the freeman..." etc etc...
In otherwords... no you don't have to play half-life, but half-life was an awesome game.

Half Life, and Half Life 2's stories don't have any relevance to each other.
However, it may be worth your time anyway. ;)

I think the first half life is free now once you get a steam account at steampowered.com even the ancient computers can run it!
But as someone said, you won't get some of the characters' names, but it's a completely different story.

Edit: Feh, it's not free after all. $9.95

Here's a demo...
I don't know if this is what you want.
http://compactiongames.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=compactiongames&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.3dgamers.com%2Fdl%2Fgames%2Fha lflife%2Fhluplink.exe.html
I've never used About before... I don't like them though...
I'm downloading it also.
If you want, I'll make sure it's safe. ;)
Although I doubt there's a reason to worry.

I would rather buy Gary's mod for 9.95, personally.

If you're really that concerned about not knowing Half Life's story I suggest you go read the Half Life 1 Wiki and then go play the whole series (HL:2,Episode 1 and 2) Also go read Half Life: Blue Shifts Wiki, and Opposing Force's Wiki.
