can you supply a bit more detail on your system, the dates and versions of your driver for your sound and display cards as well as the operating system you are using would help us to solve your problem.

I had the game running on my HP DV9590. Upgrade the drivers to version 7.15.11.6344. I think this was the version I used. Find the driver pack and download it and use the installer that comes with the driver pack so that you do not get the Windows cannot find an updated driver message.
Then try the following as well.
Go to:
My Computer
Program Files
2k Games
BioShock
Build Folder
Default.ini

Within the default.ini file search for the line win.drv
Under the win.drv section there will be
options to set the full screen width and full
screen height. Set these to match your desktop
resolution.

This cured the crash at the bioshock logo for me.

go into the start menu of vista then games, from here right click on the bioshock logo and choose play dx9 then when the game starts go into the graphic options and turn off the high detail shader.

Thanks for the info games plays in DX9 mode and also changed my screen size to laptop res. thanks guys. I hope those companys with this 8600m GS cards can play dx10 games becuase it sucks to pay that much for a dx9 card. just big disapointment.

Can on top of your video driver and when you update next you may be able to change the options back.
