I have a problem where right after the 2k introduction video with the old-style record player ends... the game just shuts down and vanishes to desktop like I had never even run it. No error messages, nothing. How can I make it run?

The issue is your videocard. An FX5900 does not support Shader Model 3.0. You can check out the ShaderShock (http://www.paolofranchini.com/shshock/index.php) site to see about Shader Model 2.0 support if you want. Otherwise, you'll need to upgrade your videocard to something that supports SM3.0.
