Ha ha ha, MW3 is pretty awesome and I'm not even a COD fanboy (flinches and runs away from jim360). I'm still debating whether to get Skyrim.

I was a bigger fan of the MW2 SP than MW3 as the levels seem much smaller and much more scripted this time. Plus, on levels where you actually need the AI to not be a moron (ie trying to sweep the submarine and constantly being exposed from at least one other side), you're on your own. The multi might be better though, I couldn't say as I returned it to the RedBox.
I do think Skyrim was crazy overhyped though I have yet to try it. Especially after coming across Dark Souls which I personally think is the best game purchase I've made in years yet none of my friends that play games have ever heard of it, but they all know what Skyrim is.

The real question is: have YOU tried either game and developed your own opinion of them? Because it kind of sounds like you are trying to define yourself by disliking what a lot of people like.
Personally, I find that people who like something simply because the masses like it are the same as those who dislike something simply because the masses like it--both groups are basing their opinions on what others think instead of making up their own minds.
I can relate to a thread that asks if anyone dislikes COD and BF, since those are the same genre and are monstrously popular. I'm not a fan of FPS or multiplayer, and for a lot of people those are the only games that exist.
But you've lumped COD and Skyrim together, which represent opposite ends of the spectrum. The only thing that connects them is their high quality and resulting popularity. If you don't like FPS multiplayer in a modern realistic setting and you don't like action RPG single player in a fantasy setting......what do YOU like? :)
And...if BioShock Infinite sells 10 million copies and become the game that everyone is talking about, will you then decided that you are sick of gamers talking about it? ;)

Here's what I love about Skyrim (even though I can understand hearing everyone constantly rave about something can wear out quick):
No matter what point I am in the game, many quests (besides the main quest) are fairly short, so I don't feel like I have to keep playing it into unwise hours of the night (good for my schedule). It has this interesting short-story type of feel with every side quest, which makes them just involving enough without making me feel like every time I sit down I have to cancel all my plans.
I feel like Skyrim really gives back to you what you give it, which can be either a bit at a time, or for days on end. It's very much a do-your-own-thing kind of game. So whether you're really busy and want to squeeze in a little game time, or have a weekend to blow, Skyrim has a variety of things to do whatever your circumstance may be.
I also really enjoy it because of the gorgeous soundtrack. Tends to make the exploring/wandering aspect of it very magical for me. I'm still waiting on my autographed Skyrim soundtrack to show up, but that's another story.
Just thought I'd pitch in about what I love about the game, rather than just be blunt about loving it without giving any reasons as to why. :) Interesting discussion!

@ Japster, yes indeed i played MW3... and hated it, and i'm really hesitant on things Bethesda as it is, Skyrim just sent me over the edge so it's not just that everyone loves these games, it's also that my personal experiance with them was just simply a waste of time

i cannot stand MW3. if you guys can tell me something that is new in MW3 from MW2, or even MW1, besides the graphics, skins of guns, and 2-3 fake, or crap guns that they make seem like the best guns out there for all those mall ninjas out there, please tell me.
i got mw2 because i enjoyed mw1 cod so much. but i was thoroughly disappoints by the entire game as a whole. the only thing different were a couple new maps, and the graphics. and even then, there were older maps on the game.
so then mw3 comes out, and much like the new battlefields, completely fails to catch my attention for its price. if anything, it is much like fallout new vegas, same crap, different story from its previous games.
skyrim ftw though.

Survival.
MW3 is entertaining. SpecOps and Survival are actually a lot more fun than I expected. The campaign is ridiculous, over the top Michael Bay type action, but it still makes for fun gameplay. AI teammates don't really matter, if you're counting on them to survive you're already screwed. As far as the MP goes its your standard cod feel, nothin really new or exciting aside from different killstreaks and weapons, though the Kill Confirmed playlist is a lot of fun - Very simple but it changes the game drastically compared to regular team deathmatch.
Skyrim's just not my type of game. I tried watching my roommate play it a lot, even tried it myself, just bores the hell out of me. I can see why people have such good things to say about, but having never been too big on RPGs in general, its just way too slow for me

i just see mw3 as a game that you would get because everyone else has it, or because you just enjoy shooting things and using an AC-130 (as if it is the only good plane).
the elder scrolls series can be slow, but i suppose its just my type of game. i did, however, get crysis 2 which is pretty damn awesome. its a new idea of a creative shooter. dont know why it isnt more popular than mw3 (probably because you have to use strategy with the nanosuit)

Skyrim is amaaaaaazing....I've played about 126 hours at this point and have so much still to do. It's crazy.
MW3 is also pretty good - Kill Confirmed is a great mode imo. :)

It's a valid point about big-named games getting too much attention, but it's probably more annoying to hate on games that are popular just because they're popular. Not saying this thread an example, but you get my point. I think gamers are annoyed by this because nowadays most people play videogames when, only a few years ago, only gamers played games. So, as experienced gamers, we are more aware of CoD's history and how it's declined over the years (in terms of innovation and progress, anyway), when non-gamers buy and play the hell out of it just because it's the next CoD, just like sports fans buy the new Madden or FIFA every year.
However, even though I'm not a fan of Bethesda games at all (Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3), I certainly see no problem in a fantasy RPG garnering similar popularity to a military shooter. If you were to tell me 15 years ago during one of my Daggerfall playing sessions that one day I'd be hearing people talk about The Elder Scrolls outside of a convention or D&D game, I'd smack you across the face. So honestly, if there are going to be a handful of series' that reach a much wider audience than the rest, I'm fine with it when a nerdy-ass series like TES is one of them.

I enjoyed Skyrim. It was an alright game.
I don't believe it deserved all the hype it got, though. It's a good game, but people acted like "OH MY GOD SKYRIM I WILL NEVER LEAVE MY HOUSE AGAIN EKHLGKJFHRKEOLKFD"
It's a good game for what it is-- an RPG set in olden times, but it wasn't anything groundbreaking for me.
As for CoD, well, that franchise died for me after CoD 4.

i liked both games alright they just suffered from the same problems the last games had mainly: a bland as hell story. This has been a big problem for me with both series for elder scrolls since Oblivion, they have the elements of a good story and there are bits and pieces of the story i enjoy its just its soooo predictable. regardless i still enjoyed playing both games, though i prefer BF3 multiplayer over mw3

You form you opinion over whether other people like the game or not.....what kind of logic is that?

I do not play Call of Duty very often; when a new game comes out I just check and it's done, but shooters are just getting to much of the same (for this I am looking foward to "The Line", that seems to have more atractive touches). And to not be a big fan of multiplayer, I just don't care for their popularity. Skyrim is a great game, very detailed and dynamic as a Role Playing Game, I mean, agile and acessible, but it does not deserves all those "outstanding achievement in..." prizes. I quite stopped playing it when the story was ended. Having got the Trophies and explored a lot, just don't have a true will to replay it all again to soon. It should be seen as a great game in terms of universe construction, but nothing way too exceptional. In my opinion Fallout 3 is a better work. The problem is; when these acessible works comes to the taste of popularity, games which indeed deserves more views tends to be obscured. Deus Ex : Human Revolution deserved much more than it received, for example. Bioshock always will be special for me, for its methaphorical figuration, philosophic significance and great art direction on crafting such a immersive experience. That was the game which touched me like other. Works of art like it, are rare. Games go to a new artistic level when they don't only serve as entertainment, but also creates some strangement and make us think. Just as in all others artistic modalities.

The campaigns are pretty fun, iknow that sounds odd because the mp is what is supposed to shine. however from playing some with my kid i find the new games just more of the same.
