One correction: that 14 minute demo is not the "complete" or "full" third level. Here is a direct quote from the G4 interview.
"This is actually--and it might change before we ship it--but this is actually the end of the third level of the game, called Emporia. That's how the level actually ends. (snip) We'll probably make some tweaks to it along the way."
Having said that, I agree with BioShock and FPS games, at least for me. I've never enjoyed a shooter as much as BioShock. I'm not sure if I've even finished another shooter besides BioShock.

So, ok, Bioshock is a different take on the FPS formula. But how come so many people still buy those Modern Warfare and CoD lame games?
I'll play the devil's advocate...If BS had changed the face of FPS like you say defectx9, then the entire industry would have taken the same mold to make their own games, while it's not the case. Nothing has changed.
IG has gained tremendous recognition though for renewing the approach, and it's entirely deserved ^^
To quote Japester, the Bioshocks are the only FPS I truly enjoyed, aside Condemned and Mirror's Edge, because they ventured somewhere different where shooting doesn't make a full and successful game. For that I'm grateful.

BioShock was one of my favorite shooters ever. I think that RE4 also changed the game with their 3/4 view of the shooter, and I feel that Fallout brought a lot of RPG elements to the shooter. That being said I think BioShock did a wonderufl job of bringing narrative to the game.

I concur, although I heartily enjoy the first two modern warfare games =)

I don't think Bioshock revolutionised FPS games, but it definitely raised the bar.

Heh. I didn't think the OP meant that BioShock changed FPS gaming for everyone. As losstarot pointed out, the more traditional shooters are still the most popular. :D
In my head, I read it as "BioShock Changed FPS gaming For Me". Prior to BioShock, I never would have considered a shooter capable of holding my attention. Now I know otherwise. It doesn't mean I want to run out and try every FPS game, but it opened my eyes to what the medium is capable of.

In Bioshock you saw masterful job of story, characters, and a world that made up for an unforgettable experience. It's something which other game's can strive to do but hard to replicate. Mechanically it was a sound experience and didn't change the FPS landscape the way COD multi player perks have infiltrated so many other multiplayer FPS. In Bioshock Infinite you have a chance with the tears, skylines, and Elizabeth too see stuff never done before or as good to go along with a great story, characters, and world.

@ Felonious - agreed. If any part of the Bioshock franchise is going to revolutionize FPS gaming, it's going to be Infinite.

I think that games like Half Life, System Shock and Deus Ex helped both devs and players see FPS's in another way: to tell a deep and great story.
Bioshock definitely continued that great tradition that only few developers are doing, so in a way it is helping to change the FPS genre. I know Infinite will help even more in that.

At last, an avid Bioshock fan that doesn't hate on the Modern Warfare series!
I think that Bioshock is part of a larger movement in gaming. What we've had since gaming immemoriam is a very segregated kind of video game market. You've got your shooters, your strategy, your RPG's, your puzzles, and what have you. I think if you look at games like Bioshock or Mass Effect, to name a couple, we are starting to see a blending of the genres. They're both shooters/RPG's/adventure/dating sims, all rolled into single gaming experiences. As games get more and more complex, the ability for the developers to engage in more and more extensive "world building", the gameplay has to evolve as well into a much more expansive simulation.
Even a game like Gears of War (which I love, BTW) has this element in it. Now, there aren't any RPG elements or anything like that, but the extent to which the environment is developed as something to enhance the player experience is vastly more complex than the simple 2D box levels of Doom and Wolfenstein.

It's true the frontiers between genres become more and more blurried and we now face hybrid titles which combine many components. Take Outlands, a shooter and its rpg elements for instance.
I hope Infinite can take the best of what they see fit into the experience.

Are you saying that Bioshock Infinite will change FPS gaming? Or that Bioshock changed the FPS gaming world as a whole, or for you personally? That may determine the best place for this thread.
I agree COD changed FPS gaming in many ways. In a way, it brought gaming to entertainments, main-stream-red carpet-status.
I wonder if Bioshock did change FPS gaming. Can anyone confirm if Bioshock was the first FPS game to combine ammunition with elemental enhancements? Think electro/exploding buck. Games like Borderlands and Mass Effect use that mechanic, and is a major part of why those games are so successful.

If Bioshock really changed FPS gaming than more people would have bought it over Call of Duty.
But the fact is FPS is not going to be changed by a game with little girls with syringes and electric bullets.
Counter Strike changed FPS gaming. Counter Strike has been here for years, way longer than BioShock has. Look at the custom maps out there and the communities that flourished around it. Bioshock is simply a novelty game. A game where you role play as this guy.
Didn't change anything. If it did the people wouldn't want to play Call of Duty anymore. Instead they would be playing Bioshock and praising it. There would be multilayer and temples devoted to mapping and skinning.
No matter how much you look at Bioshock through those rose painted lens, it's not going to change FPS gaming. Bioshock told a story, that's it. A great empire did not rise around it.
No matter how much you thumbs me down, it's not going to change FPS gaming. The more real it is, the better it is in the eyes of FPS gamers. Have you seen the latest Bafflefield 3 trailer? It looked like it was CNN. It takes place today and over there, not in some city built in the past under the sea. No matter how unique your underwater, flying, volcano city is it will never beat present day affairs. FPS gaming laughs at us. It wants us to be like everyone else and conform to playing soldier.
Giving "moral" choices will not give what the people want. People don't want to meet an industrialist and club his head in with a four iron. You can become snobbish and turn your nose at Counter Strike, Call of Doody, Modern Warfare, Battlefield 3 but people are going to pursue their happiness anyway. If this is what sells, this is what's going to sell. War sells okay?
It makes money and the money smells great.
The FPS industry provides mindless happy because debating whether or not you are going to harvest a little sister is WAY to complicated for the average FPS gamer.
What makes me happy is being a snob. Now bring on another Bioshock story so I can show it to my friends at my Gentlemen's Gaming Club where we look like the actors of a movie set in the 1920s.
Now thank the heavens that you at least have a Bioshock Infinite. It could be worse. Imagine a future without Bioshock.
