View Full Version : Is Rapture Truly Dead?

I know I'm not the only Bioshock fan who almost died when I heard Rapture was not going to be the setting of the new Bioshock, and I have a simple question about this wonderful city:

Is it really dead?

Rapture holds a special place in my heart as the city that aspired for so much greatness but fell apart due to a vacuum of power. Even though a large portion of the fan base believes that Rapture's story is told, I'd have to disagree with them completely. The creation of the city, the discovery of ADAM and how it affected the society, the life of Tenenbaum and her involvement with the Little Sisters, heck, even extended stories on the lives of minor characters like Bill McDonagh and Mariska Lutz could make a great game. All in all I believe Rapture, although many of its secrets may be known, is still a fertile terrain for great stories to be told.

So in a nutshell I just want to know: is the possibility of us returning to Rapture out the window...or will we be wandering her broken (or possibly grand) halls again?

Thanks for any replies,

This has been brought up in a few interviews with various people at IG. The response across the board has been something along the lines of *"we'll never say we're never going back to Rapture...but at this point in time, we've told our version of Rapture's story and said everything we had to say and our focus is currently on Infinite"* (or something along those lines)

(I just watched the interview with GiantBomb this past weekend and I'm pretty sure that's what was asked, check it out)

Rapture is a pretty swell place and while I was originally saddened that Infinite isn't going to take place there, after playing both games including the DLC's...it would be difficult to keep going and would be treading the line of "going to the well one too many times" or whatever that sports saying is. Plus, Columbia and it's pepole look pretty neat-o too

I certainly hope not!. Yes, indeed Bioshock 2 was created by 2k Marin continuing with Rapture's story but that doesn't means Rapture is doom for good. While BS:I created by IG who also was the original creator of BS. If you would so kindly visit 2k forum. There was a thread with replies of Rapture need a next installment (trilogy). I couldn't agree more to that. Rapture's a too big, too epic restricted to just two games.

I believes it has something to do with the time period of game. So basically you have two different teams 2k Marin with Rapture and Irrational Games with it's own Bioshock game. Yeah, something is really screw here. By the time 2012 is here BS:I launches. Gamers and consumers may have grows tire and redundant of the series and not interest anymore. No matter if one relate to another story wise or not. If by any chance Rapture 3 announces it will be all too late. Like Mafia and Mafia 2 games...8 years inbetween. I hope that all makes sense. Well that's just my thoughts.

No your not, I was sad to hear that BSI was not going to take place in Rapture as well. Or atleast they could make a sister city, like the city of Atlantis on meth or something.

The minute I heard that BS:I would be in the sky I was in denial, I contemplated how they were going to extend Rapture up to the sky. Up until I realized that it was a different storyline entirely. Yet from the looks of the new gameplay it appears that BS:I will be somehow reflective of the Capitalism vs. Communism battle that was happening for more than a century. That sounds like an amazing storyline. And if irrational games has the balls to side with capitalism over communism or vica-versa then the games inner working and story cold be potentially groundbreaking. I miss Rapture, but I can't wait to see how BS:I should evolve.

Isn't a man entitled to see the golden age of his beloved city?

All I've ever dreamt of is a game where we get to witness Rapture before and after its demise.

I'm WAY more interested in Columbia than Rapture.

After 2 Bioshocks already in Rapture - one from Irrational; the other from 2K Marin - I'd ready for somewhere else.

I think Bioshock's Rapture games (Bioshock 1 and 2) and Bioshock: Infinite are probably going to be two different properties and entities now, anyways.

Honestly, the world of Rapture has captured so many hearts and minds that I would be surprised if it didn't turn up again in some sort of form. While gazing upon the sunlit spires of Columbia, I could easily envision a world where Columbia inspired Andrew Ryan to do his thing "unda de sea". For instance, if the events of BS:I are made public after the presumed fall of Columbia, what would a young Ryan think after reading Atlas Shrugged and seeing a Newsreel about Alphas? So many ideas here...

I'm sure 2K Games will create a last BioShock in Rapture...I'm just sure Irrational themselves, at least with Ken on board, will not.

BioShock in general won't live forever, and in a way, that's a good thing. We don't want to get sick of what we love.

I was wondering the same thing! I along with others wanted BioShock 3 to be a prequel to the first BioShock. I would like to see Rapture just before the fall.

Please say that the Art Deco halls of Rapture have not succumb to the harsh waters of the Atlantic.

How about this, Bioshock 3, Set in Rapture before the civil war, you play as one of Andrew ryans security detail, he will send you on missions to keep an eye on fontaine, seize fontaines smuggling rings, fight off fontaines goons and Big Daddies that have been re-programmed by Fontaine's men to protect Fontaine's stolen Little Sisters, and return them & their ADAM, to Fontaine instead of Ryan. Retrieve stolen Little sisters from said Big Daddies. Be one of the shooter's that supposedlly guns down and kills Fontaine in a firey shootout and ofcourse add in some other cool side missions, like being sent to aresst Sofia Lamb, Milton Porter, ect. and incarcerate them in persephone. What do yall think about that idea??

GIMME SOME FEEDBACK HOMIES! :)

Just want to point out, if we revisit Rapture (Epic, best places ever!) too many times then it will lose what makes it so amazing, so magical, and so appealing.

I loved Rapture, it would be nice to see it before it fell, but if we don't go beck there I'll be OK with it.

Going back too much would make some gamers sick of it, I think. And we pretty much know it's entire story now anyway. I am excited about Columbia as well. One thing I do want to see more of though, is Eleanor Lamb, I loved the character and really hope to see how things work out for her.

I wouldn't mind seeing Rapture before it fell, however the game wouldn't be the same.

Maybe as suggested above? Be a security guard for the first level then, have the fall of Rapture start. otherwise it will just be another FPS filled with FedEx quests. I hate games like this.
