Where would you work in the city and if Dewitt came in and saw a shift in your workroom what would it be originally and what would it change too?

For me personally I would work at the pie shop making of course the apple pies. The thing that would shift would be the tag for apple pie and the pie itself would turn into a Blachindla sign and a Blachindla.

a Professor at the University or some such other respectable education facility. Work room would shift from a tidy study with book-lined shelves and maps/charts of famous battles and countries pinned to the walls, to local maps with various key points highlighted and plans drawn up for the guerilla movement.

lol you make a good point are we to assume they have the technology for robots in this Columbia if you remember in Rapture they had the tech for it but even then it wasn't fall proof. But assuming she is a robot I don't see how we couldn't have a nice human/robot relationship sweeping away to our hearts content enjoying the simple life.

And you'd also get all the gossip on what was happening around town. And now that I think of it this would turn in to a good thing for a SITS sight for Infinite. You could be a news reporter and you get to find out a bit of a back story outside of the game. Also I don't know if this has been brought up anywhere what is going to happen to audio diaries. its an interesting idea. :D

I won't be in Columbia since I would be part of the "foreign horde". If I got to go I'll be part of the anarchists.

That's really the more realistic happening. I don't think many of us would fit in with the nationalistic city. We're either foreigners or our politics are too libertarian for them.

Very true very true rcrab hey I just imagined finding an Easter egg in a really hard to reach place and you find Ken Levine making an in game cameo stuck to a wall being attacked by some 'good' patriots screaming you guys are so 1990 while they yell back kill the foreigner or protect the foreigner or something liek that.

When the developers were thinking about making another bioshock game they took apart the first game and found that heart of the game was not the big daddy’s or little sisters. Instead it was about unfamiliarity in a familiar backdrop.

The thing that made Bioshock1 so popular is that you could imagine yourself as the guy(or girl) at the bottom of the see who made some mistakes and now are paying the cost of your actions.

If in BI If we cannot imagine ourselves fitting in to the city at some degree don't you think that the game is just a waste of time?

ryanthomasbolton

I agree with aamericans I think Irrational will no doubt having us feel like we are Booker are very ourselves so I feel that experience will gained from bioshock 1 won't be disregarded in Infinite.

Personally, I never thought of myself as possibly being a citizen of Rapture. I'm far to much of an Anarcho-Communist for that. I guess that should be the same for Columbia too.

ryanthomasbolton

I think we still have to fundamentally believe in the character I mean you believed in Jack you thought what he did was reasonable and that anyone human would do the same, with Delta it was the same. Personally I don't believe characters actions in some other games and for me that doesn't help a video game were you are effectively getting to enact yourself, in so far todays most realistic and accesible way.

I'd be one of the Vox Pupuli. I'd be one of the folks manning the hotel who actually want people to come. I'd be a bellhop and the shift would entail my baggage cart hiding an anti personel cannon loaded with buckshot. I'd fill the lobby full of holes. As for the shift, I think it would be on my hotel name tag maybe shifting from English to Cyrillic.

I would open up a smuggling detail, á la Fontaine, bringing contraband into the good city of Colombia. I would even consider smuggling people to and from the city, if the price was right that is.

I would later go through a personal conflict, should I help people without the chance of earning profit, or should I keep with the 'safe' course ignoring my conscience?

In the end I would do the former and even give my life to save as many of the citizens of Colombia I could muster. In the end, after aiding Booker and Elisabeth, a handyman or angry mob would find me and kill me. But not until I give a heartbreaking, mindblowing monologue about what I've come to discover about myself and others...

I would be an incredible musician who goes insane and writes crazy poems about ripping off bunny ears.

Oh, and I would kill people and take pictures of those who I have brutally killed.

I would open up a ragtime hall in Columbia. I would consider bringing some musicians from the city and bring them to the soaring skies to pursue their dream.

And also, I would be against Saltonstall's concept of getting rid of foreigners and anarchists and stop his so-called political nonsense.

Also, finally, I would help with Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth get out of the city from the angry mob while destructing the city into ruins and live our normal lives.

The goal of BioShock and it's theme was, to an extent, alienation of the player. As a 'normal person' of the above world, you side with Jack as you descend into this supposed wonderland of human invention and freedom, a utopia of sorts. Half of the game is spent crafting this vision of Rapture in freefall, a paradise gone wrong. None of us would fit there by today's standards, true, but that's because we identify with the player, and also come from the 2000's. It may be difficult to imagine, but at the time frame of both games, we would have possibly been ideal candidates.

If the citizens of Columbia could overlook my Amerindian genetics, I would probably be some kind of mechanic or engineer, or possibly a musician. When troubles came, I would arm myself and defend Columbia from anyone who wanted to take my home and family away. I'd probably fall for the propoganda, too, and doubtless I was killed by Booker in the gameplay video as I chased him out of the bar I was in at the time. =)

I'd own a floating Noodle Bar - red sailed powered balloon in Chinese Junk style just like the guy at the beginning of 5th Element, an airborne version of Deckard's favorite noodle stall in Blade Runner!

yes, either that or just stick to being the Private Eye ex Pinkerton gumshoe. I wonder if it's gonna rain in Columbia...? I am such a film noir Chandler fan.. dust off the old raincoat and hat...plus waistcoat and pocket watch probably in those times...but I'd rather have a lightsabre under me coat than an old carbine or pistol as that would be really a timeline paradox!

I dunno, I'd contend that in many ways the player could see themselves living in Rapture. But it's also so foreign and, like you said, alienating. I think it's the combination of those two things that make the world so engaging and frightening. You feel as though you could easily be one of those insane denizens.

levyathyn
10-14-2010, 06:57 AM
^ Exactly. It just took both of us to say it.

Rapture is sort of the American Dream; In the same way, it's like a nightmare city. It seems like it could suck you in at any time, but it's alien and sometimes incomprehensible.

It's like H.P. Lovecraft wrote 'Atlas Shrugged'.

Atlas Shrugged is an awesome book. It explains objectivsm while also maintaining a good story. It is unnecesarily long though. There is an entire 50 pages devoted to one guy talking.

It's good if you look at it as a philosophy book instead of a work of fiction. As fiction, it's sorta dull and VERY preachy. Quite long too.

If you're interested there has actually been some interesting debate on how the city sustains itself here: http://irrationalgames.com/community/forums/bioshock-infinite-general-discussion/trade-in-columbia#post-163316 ('http://irrationalgames.com/community/forums/bioshock-infinite-general-discussion/trade-in-columbia#post-163316')

When things get weird and destabalized money doesnt mean that much any more (though with actual gold/silver coinage it might be values a bit longer than paper greenbacks)

If law and order breaks down you might find that the factions will just 'appropriate' all your stock (all to deny it to their enemies) . It likely wouldnt be like in the real world where your ability to bring IN more weapons from someplece else is the reason they MIGHT deal more fairly with you. If Columbia is cutoff from the rest of the country its not likely you will have any channel to replenish your weapon/ammo stocks (and after a few years from when ever the problems started you would have been one of the first things any of them would seize).

I would own a ragtime music club where they would come in a live their dream and they get paid extra and seeing the tear open, probably looking at the future and seeing these great bands coming out with some great music in late '70s and early '80s by opening up the tear. I would have the club with full security with cannonballs and lock and loaded if the Founders and Vox Populi would come in and destroy it apart. I would get out of the city by teaming up with Booker and Elizabeth and having my own private zeppelin to get the hell out of Columbia
