I know the game is set in 1912...but I was curious to find out more about the US of A around that time.

I found this about the US in 1900:

How legit it is...I'm not sure as there are no citations, and the country of Australia wasn't even a country until January 1901 [officially] and is mentioned. Anyway...

I wouldn't doubt that this is too far off...and now I'm curious. In Rapture (to draw similarities) for every tuxedo wielding masquerade ball attendee, there were the people working in the sub bays and essentially lived in the 'under belly' of Rapture (Sullivan's dealing perhaps). What would the high snobiety type of people in Columbia not only look like and act...but how would the other side of that coin be (aside from the perennial state of July 4th celebrations and ultra-nationalism)?

Opinions? Suggestions? Thoughts?

Purely speculating and assuming that the city of Columbia is somewhat similar to Rapture. That being said; there has to be a working class put in order for the city of Columbia to stay afloat and clean (ie cooks, janitorial personnel, engineer and etc and etc.) Furthermore, what's a city without some law enforcers (maybe Handyman at work???) to protect and preserve Columbia's propaganda and its system of order, otherwise chaos would broke out. Finally, there's i believes an elite high class controlling and ruling all of Columbia.

So yeah, i do think there's probably a class warfare happening but they're too afraid to rebel or bring an uprising for fear of retributions. Well that's just my opinion.

I think half the idea of Columbia is that is is upper-class only. My guess is that there is a very limited or hidden lower class, with the handymen doing the menial labor. Awesome powers (and maybe immortality, from the way the heart is so prominently displayed and preserved) in trade for doing the heavy lifting? I'm sure there are those who would take the offer.

I agree completely, it must be mostly upper- class citizens due to the fact that Columbia is a floating city. No "peasants" would ever be able to afford living in such a place.

Also, considering the ads in the down like 'Columbia doesn't want your chaff,' maybe they have more automated systems+handymen to take care of that sort of thing than Rapture did. I mean, for each individual float in the city you would basically just need a captain and a second-in-command if most of the functions were automated.

Saltonstall seems to be one of the elite-political people. I'm thinking that Columbia is 100% homogenized though, the Chaff poster..as well as the other posters we have so far would indicate an ultra-national, nativist feeling.
